So no bank account would stop the charges?

My post office platinum credit card has no charges for transactions in other currencies and uses the current published bank of England exchange rate (not the awful exchange rates they offer travellers on buying/selling currency when you go abroad).

Saves me a significant pile of cash each year as I spend 6-8 weeks a year overseas

Thats good but I wouldn't want the Platinum account, if anything a basic saver would be grand as I could transfer about 20bucks in at a time and that would do me for a few months.

It isn't an account, it is just a credit card (my bank account is with a different financial institution), I just use it to avoid any costs at all for overseas transactions and then just pay it off each month

If you've installed the official froyo (2.2) update then it isn't going to be straightforward I'm afraid as you will have to downgrade your bootloader before you can even start the rooting process.

Head over to the desire section on XDA developers and read the very lengthy threads on this, but don't expect things to be straightforward (i.e. just clicking a few buttons)
So if I get a Desire in November, it'll take me a while to root it :(?

How bad is the battery life.

I have an omnia at the the moment and automatically charge it every night. depends on how busy a day I've had it may be down to 20%.

I'm used to charging everynight but not twice a day is it that bad. When working from home it'll only really be used for voice calls and sms. Its when working away it'll be used more fully

Right then folks I need your advice :)

I've ROOTED !!! yea

Unrevoked 3 worked a treat and I now have root access and have backed up everything using Titanium backup.

So, I need advice on which ROM to try and whether or not it will work OK on an Orange Desire (in other words will I have to buy an unlock code?? I'm not intending on replacing the SIM card with any other one)

Most of the ROM's require a new Radio. Is this fairly risk free???

Will all my paid for apps be restored by Titanium post ROM change???

Will I have to set up my (really nice) Launcherpro plus layout with widgets and custom icons again???

Thanks

CK

Right guys im sure you have all been throught this about a million times but due to tmob still slacking with froyo i want to root.

What is the "best" rom atm? and can someone link a simple guide to root (im sorry:P)

I'm off on holiday tomorrow so I want to make sure I don't incur any data charges. What's the best way to switch off ALL attempts to connect to data while I'm abroad? A google suggests a half-dozen different settings.

Could maybe just delete your network settings. There is probably some other simpler option. I make sure A-gps is deactivated too

Just make sure the option to connect to data services when roaming is unticked and you'll be fine. I've just come back from a month in the US and Canada and haven't used any mobile data other than the free wifi provided in hotels, cafes etc.

For added piece of mind, use the HTC widget for mobile data (found under widgets/settings) and always make sure that is switched off too.

There is no need to switch AGPS off as this does not involve sending packet data and I used GPS extensively (CoPilot) on my trip without getting any data charges at all.

Also, it might be worth switching your phone to GSM only mode, as it is pointless it looking for a 3G signal in areas where you can't receive 3G or want to use it anyway, and this will also have an added bonus of being slightly kinder on your battery.

Wherever you are going, have fun :)

Tried Defrost and LeeDroid.

LeeDroid has Sense so I'm sticking with that.

It's cocked up all my launcherpro settings though, so I'll have to start again with that.....

Boooooo

Didn't you backup your launcher pro settings? That should have restored most of your layout, however widgets have to be manually re-added.

I did, it made a hash of the widgets, custom icons, dock background, and folder organiser didn't reload correctly, making a hash of all my labels and shortcuts!

I'll get there.....but it's a pain in the ass....

I need to try to restore my contacts, mail accounts and messages too
