brother has just got a desire from a mate , its locked to t mobile and on stock 2.2


can anyone advise the best way of unlocking it ? and then whats the best route to rooting/custom software

These are the methods i used, and have had no problems with any of them.

Note:

For the unlocking, this is a free method and used at your own risk. read the thread before you start doing anything.

For the routing, make sure you understand everything before you start and read the thread first/ ask questions.

For the ROM make sure you do your research and meet the requirements of the ROM.

Had this phone for over a year pleased with the phone but was getting peeved off with sense and running low on memory problems and started to get slow down issues.

So today I finally got round to rooting and installing gingervillain on android 2.3.6. So far am impressed :0

Don't like the dock bar tho. Any suggestions?

Also have a very cheap and nasty rubber cover on it that cuts my fingers the odd time lol. Anyone have the Case-Mate HTC Desire Tough Case ?
I love the feel of the phone with out but its just feel cheap in the rubber case

I take it you mean the launcher at the bottom of the screen? If so i use Zeam Launcher from Android market

Can't help with the case as i use mine without.

Case mate tough case is a great case.

can't believe people are charging money for the unlock when its as easy as running that app and plugging in
 
Had such a worry this morning, last night I split beer all over my Desire, it died instantly, as I was out in town I just left it in my pocket as I was far from a fit state to take the battery out.

But left it in on top of my computer case with the graphics card fan blowing air on it all day with the battery out.

And after a hours wait of charging, it's all up and running again and everything works fine, never had such a scare like that. Bloody alcohol.
 
can anyone point me in the way of fully debranding this ?

I've rooted , unlocked , installed a cynanogen rom but it still shows the t mobile loading circle when i switch it on , any way to stop this ? not that important but it would be nice to have it fully 'stock'
 
I did the classic trick of dropping my phone and cracking the screen. The LCD is functioning fine, it's just the glass screen. Does anyone have any experience of doing such repair? I've priced up one on ebay for about £20... quick straight fix? How much would a repair through HTC be?

You could always try installing one of the HTC RUU installs; or the official Gingerbread 'dev' RUU. This should debrand you fully as it's a full software replacement down to the bootloader.
 
this^ is really what should have been done from day 1. why are people skipping this step? Technically, installing a CM rom should modify the boot logos to thier own too

the boot logo is CM but before the boot logo appears (which used to be a t mobile logo ) there is a purple/pink loading circle which I'm sure is t mobiles

why did i skip that step ? because i didn't know about it ! intact i still don't really know what is meant.
 
Basically, go to xda or htcs site and download the HTC RUU. Its basically HTCs stock ROM, as if you had bought the Desire directly from HTC or unbranded

As far as I know, the system update comes from your carrier, and has nothing to do with your rom.. so don't install it. I've heard it can cause problems.
 
just discovered the APN reset trick - christ my phone runs so much smoother now its mental.

also fancyforcast is a buggy piece of **** and if you have it running i really would switch to something like goweather.

apps often change the APN settings on your phone which can cause conflicts and crashes , you an reset it back to default by going into wirless/networks - mobile networks - access point names - menu button , reset to default.

not saying it works for everyone, but certainly did for me and others on the xda forums seem to share similar results.

random that such a thing would affect the phone so much but golauncher is much smoother, app draw is snappier and my camera is not buggy anymore (used to white screen on me all the time) so it clearly does do positive things....
 
Having issues with sending txt msgs a lot lately. It started to develop on Handcent so I switched to Go, but it's getting worse.
I remember Khan saying he had a similar problem if I remember rightly.

Basically when I start texting in quick reply, my characters suddenly grey out, and I cant type in any more letters, it only take a flew clicks of the back button to Draft the message and go back into it, but its becoming annoying.

Anyone experienced this??
