Will the JB update be good enough to stop me from moving to the nexus 4? :p

I just wish updates came quicker to non nexus devices.

That and a bigger screen are the only things tempting me away from the S.

It will probably be 2-4 weeks till us sim free UK one S owners see this jb update :(

EDIT:

But sarge, it is made of plastic and glass and is a 4.7" screen device

:p

I could quite happily live with a 4.7 now i've had this for a while.

I'll just have to weigh it up when the time comes. I'm not sure whether i'm that bothered about having uber latest hardware when the S does me just fine. (i mean hell i had a kc910 for 3 years :D)

Same!

I would very much like a note II due to the screen size but it is just stupidly big, GS 3/X and nexus 4 is as big as I will go.

Again same, not really bothered about S4 quad as in real world usage there won't be a huge difference if any compared to the our S4 one S devices when we get JB and whilst the 2GB RAM would be great to have, as has been said by many, it isn't needed. Plus if the X+ battery does work fine in the S then battery will be really good :D

The other thing that might make me hold onto the S for a bit longer is due to the poor resale value of the S, could sell it on ebay but not worth the hassle and I don't think any of my friends would be willing to buy my S for £230-250 :p

Will all come down to how good the nexus 4 is with regards to audio, camera and battery.

I know! The thin, sexy raw aluminium body gets better everyday :D ...but £280 for all that hardware AND stock software!

:D

the amount of fuss everyone in this and the s3 thread is making about the jellybean update should tell everyone everything they need to know about whether they'd like a move to the Nexus 4!

Personally being happy to root and flash takes away a bunch of the appeal of stock android anyway but if you're fussed about updates... get the nexus

I probably will move to the nexus, but it all depends on what camera, audio and battery is like and I will also need to find someone wanting to buy my S from me for at least £200 :p

TBH, I am not really looking forward to much from the base jellybean update apart from project butter, notifications improvements.... more looking forward to the improvements in sense  :o :p Like the camera changes, more themes, UI tweaks etc.

So, guesses as to how long it will take sim free owners in the UK to get this update?

My guess is 5 weeks :p

Still no sign of jellybean for the S at all and hardly anyone seems to have got it for the X, despite being rolled out what 6-10 days ago......

This is exactly why I want to move away from non nexus devices:

- lack of updates/support
- take an absolute eternity, still sticking by what I said earlier, not expecting to see JB on my phone until January
- different roll out dates for different countries/CID numbers
- no actual proper date on when we will actually get updates
- talk absolute **** with when we should get updates "soon" does soon mean weeks/months?

Seriously when are google going to step up and start being a bit more "firm handed" with regards to manufacturers and the updates, it really is the only disadvantage of android and a damn big disadvantage, iirc hardly any android devices are actually on ICS, still on 2.3 and the only device to have jellybean officially aside from the nexus devices is the GS 3....

If they are then I see no sign of it. Surely at Motorola, which they now own, they would be pushing Jellybean out for the new Razr's but see little to no sign of any Jelly action on the horizon. "Before the end of the year" and "early next year" is all I hear from Moto - allegedly!

Of course Nexus once you get 4.1 you'll be waiting for 4.2 and it could go on like that for the life of the phone - or even your lifetime

Answer would be to buy a Nexus phone which probably would be the Nexus 4 currently. Having come back down from the 4.6" One X screen to the 4.3 Razr i, I got to say the One S screen size has a lot going for it. One X screen was good but always seemed washed out in comparison to the One S. Big screen was great but soon started to get tired of it during daily use. But back home in comfy chair all was seemed good again. Every time I picked the One S up I missed the one handed ease of use if afforded and it's the same with the Razr i. I just know if I go bigger again I'll pine for the smaller screen for day to day use  So right now I'm not interested in the Nexus 4 and probably the same regards Razr HD, even if it was available. I now realize Apple didn't miss a trick with the size of the iPhone 5

Yup I thought the "whole we have changed our image and think nearly stock android experience is the way forward because users like to get updates quickly" was a load of BS, just too good to be true as usual

Nah, not really bothered about 4.2 :p  nothing that exciting about it apart from the photosphere camera feature, which I am sure will be available on the market soon enough....

I think 4.2 will be the last update the S will get though due to:

- all the newest phones that HTC have released and will continue to do
- not popular handset at all
- most android handsets only ever get 2 updates

If it does get another update, it will definitely take a long time to get it.

Yup seriously considering the nexus 4 even if the camera/audio isn't quite as good. The only things, which I would really miss about the S in comparison to the N4 are:

- design and build
- camera UI, features and quality and of course slow motion recording :p
- sense on the whole
- SAMOLED screen for the blacks and vibrant colours, which IMO is better for videos/films, games and throughout the UI

Main things that I really like about the N4 are:

- obviously updates :p better support overall and you don't have new nexus devices being released every month.......
- bigger screen
- in theory better battery life
- more popular handset thus there will be a ton more accessories (hardly any accessories for the S especially when compared to the GS 3 on mobile fun :()
- far better NLED
- IPS HD display, which is better for browsing and photos IMO

Size doesn't really bother me at all, it is nice to have a smaller device when on the move and only using the one hand, but a big screen is great (especially since my main uses are browsing, videos and the gallery etc.) as long as it is comfortable to hold then it will be fine i.e. I found the one X to be uncomfortable but found the GS 3 to be very comfortable despite being bigger and supposedly the nexus 4 is even more comfortable to hold in one hand compared to the GS 3

Just have to wait for the public to get their hands on it and report back if their are any issues as well as the anandtech and gsmarena review.

they almost certainly won't, if they cared in any way other than passively they'd have done something about it by now. They're providing free open source code so by its very nature they don't have much say over how it gets used or supported. They have the open handset alliance thing but thats just noise.

The other answer is flash your phone with whatever software you like? I had my S unlocked and flashed to CM10 4.1 inside half an hour of getting it and relocked and back to stock before selling it, its too easy, anyone in the know should be doing that (unless you have a killer reason for wanting sense/touchwiz etc) and anyone who isn't probably doesn't care and are entirely the reason you're not getting your updates.

The general consumer neither knows nor cares what version they're on and by trying to differentiate the OEMs have pushed their skins so often way past stock or the next update that the average consumer wouldn't even know what the benefits it brought were to even know what to be angry about not having.

I would like to root and flash custom ROMs/tweaks etc. but I don't want to go down that road as there is always problems with certain things i.e. battery drain, memory leaks, GPS not locking on quickly/accurately, bootloops etc. just annoying niggles that I cba dealing with :p

Besides, there isn't much reason for me to root/flash apart from adblock, stock android theme amongst a few other things and I love sense so would be sticking to sense based ROMs.

No there's SOMETIMES issues, not ALWAYS. The CM10 and AOKP I ran on the One S was flawless, no issues at all and the version I had on my S3, similarly absolutely fine. In the brief time I was using sense that was absolutely something I CBA with! It just looked like a toy phone and it seemed obsessed with trying to get me to network socially and share stuff etc etc.

No.

Just let me add whatever I want to add, there's no sense in hitching yourself up to an ecosystem with millions of apps and then trying to force a bunch of rubbish ones down my throat because you think you know best.

Although to be fair exactly what I said about roms is also true of stock apps and bloatware, probably 90% of customers either don't know they needn't be there or use them because they were there or even BOUGHT it because they were there.

The difference being, knowing I don't want them and being able to do something about it and knowing there's a way to update stupidly easily etc means to me, there's absolutely no sense (no pun intended) whinging about something not happening that you can make happen yourself.

Fair enough if you didn't encounter any issues, it is just from my experience with the galaxy spica etc. and reading through these threads where you see people complaining about the stuff I mentioned.

Personally haven't encountered anything with network social stuff and sharing things. Although I have disabled an awful lot of crap, which I don't need/want like facebook, twitter, sense widgets etc.

My phone is half and half really, only things that I use of sense is the messaging app, gallery, camera, music player and the sense browser (although mainly use quick ics browser), the rest is 3rd party apps, nova launcher, ex dailer, APW widgets, snowstorm etc. etc.

Although I would be perfectly happy using stock sense all round as I really like the look of it and love the unified feel across the sense apps.

Whilst I see your last point, the consumers shouldn't have to do this especially when it voids your warranty and even more so when the device isn't even a year old, although it is getting the update, it is more just the time frame even though the X+ has had jellybean since being reviewed like a month or so ago.

I guess I am just more annoyed that they have kept saying the update is out etc. when ever no one seems to have got the update and now they are saying that it is was delayed and now rolling out
