*** The official HTC One S thread ***

Very much looking forward to it  Just hope that they don't remove the ZOE camera features as that is the main thing, which I love about sense V5

However, they say in the next few months but we all know that really means in about 5-7 months time :p :(

If the update does arrive within the next few months and improves most areas even more, I could quite happily stay with the 1S till the next lot of phones, truly a superb phone.

I swear my camera isn't that good :p

Yeah they do look a bit too good! Probably has done some touch up in lightroom/photoshop.

These are probably my best photos, without any adjustments:

HTC are really careful when it comes to updating their phones so you're probably right! :D

Indeed! Let's hope that Sense v5 gets ported across more or less intact!

You really have got the HOS camera sussed! You are the master when it comes to taking photos with it! ;)

Was it my imagination, or was there a comment from HTC a while ago that they were going to release a One S ROM without Sense? I can't find any sign of it, thought it would be out by now.

I'm really tempted to root just to get rid of white backgrounds and menus, but it seems ridiculous that I'm forced to go that far for such a simple thing on an open source OS!

Thanks :)

Fantastic photos! Are some of the effects done using the built in camera/gallery stuff?

Amazing that a phone can produce shots like this

Yeah all that is from the gallery with perhaps minor tweaks from elsewhere. The camera + screen combo is excellent for photography.

One S for my wife arrived today (chosen thanks to the recommendations of a certain Nexus18)

Unfortunately the "unlocked" phone turned out to be T-Mobile specific (she's on Orange) and images from the camera are reddish. Very very reddish actually. So much so that a shot of white paper is most definitely pink. Absolutely awful colours compared to my One X. Shame since it was Nexus18's great photos taken on a One S that persuaded me to get this.

Fortunately the seller has offered a full refund (even before we knew about the camera issue) so it'll be going back tomorrow.

And be damned if I'm going to shell out another £300+ for another market place trader on Play again, so looks like no One S for my wife. :(

What to get instead that's as good as a One S and the same size??

There was something mentioned about it, a developer ROM or something like that, but likewise, haven't heard or seen anything about it since it was mentioned, which was a few months before the JB update iirc.

Could you not buy an unlock code for a few pounds from ebay to unlock it?

Hmm, that is strange, just tried it myself and the paper looks fine to me. Perhaps just a bad camera as the camera can vary a lot for each device as shown by kona's brother's phone, his seemed to saturate colours a lot more than my device.

Only other options are the GS 2 (android), htc one V (IIRC it is pretty good for the camera but the phone itself is pretty crap), iphone 4s or some windows phone perhaps like the htc 8s.

EDIT:

you tried a factory reset?

Yeh I could get an unlock code, that's not really the end of the world tbh though my issue is it's not how it was described from the seller. And it looks the only custom software T-Mobile have put on is rebranding of the stock browser. I haven't really looked at what's on it so I'm sure there's probably more. I'm sure members here could give the list....

I tried a factory reset, made no difference to the photos. I turned the saturation and contrast both to -1 and the images were better, but it was clear there was still a slight redness to white paper. Either sat or contrast any lower makes the images black and white. (EDIT: definitely the camera not the screen, the white HTC screen on boot up is perfectly white and crisp, the wallpaper looks great. Actually the screen looks really good.)

The first thing my wife did once it was out of the box was point the camera at our kids and snap. My daughter looked like she's taken a bottle of this stuff http://www.elc.co.uk/Red-Ready-Mix-Paint-284ml/120170,default,pd.html , poured out the contents and face-planted in it. And that was under 400w of halogens in our kitchen. Seriously, the pics really were that bad.

Just one of those unfortunate defects I guess.

We also had a look at the GS2 based on your recommendations from before. She didn't like it. Razr-i was on show in the same place, she didn't like that either (neither did I to be fair)

Guess we'll have to go into town tomorrow and have a look around. Again.

Not too sure what stuff t-mobile would add, if they did add any apps, you could always disable them via settings>apps>top right "disable" though

Hmm, definitely got a poor device then :(

Could try getting another one S like what Mike said?

I honestly can't think of anything else for android that will be as good as the one S for size and camera. The nokia lumia 720 could be a good alternative, but is windows :(

CF93 -

How about one from smartphonestore? Grade A when in stock is £169.99, grade B is £159.99.

Never knew that place existed. Thanks, will keep an eye on it. My wife's been without a phone for a couple of weeks now since hers broke so wants to get something asap, so we'll probably end up just get something on the high street tomorrow anyway, but thanks for letting me know about that site, definitely one for the future!

Yeh guess it happens from time to time.

To be honest if the camera was ok I would probably just tell her to keep it, then unlock it and be done with it. The custom splash screens on power up/down are hardly a pain to live with, and every phone has bloatware anyway.

Want to stick with android preferrably. Have nothing against windows phones, just think that it will be easier for me to be tech support for her as she learns smartphones if it's on something I already know....
