*** The official HTC One S thread ***

Still loving my phone, although I have been somewhat distracted.

Meet Amelia..3 weeks old today :)

One X has a "bug" which allows way more light (at the cost of a lot slower shutter) to be captured than with the other presets, so I am thinking since the one X and S camera are pretty much the same and the software are both the same, this should work for us to? I will give it a try later and post back, here is the guide/tip to do it:

Well finally got some resolution with my poor HTC Customer service.

After sending the letter to the global director of PR, someone contacted me at the start of April and offered me a free HTC One!

They sent me a demo unit a couple of days ago as they don't have any new stock on hand, first impressions are that the build quality is superb, very snappy phone but I haven't really tested out the camera or any of the new features yet.

Just seen that you got a HTC one in the other thread! Thinking what but I thought you said.......:p

Damn impressive result you got in the end! What did I say ;) :p

Would love to hear how you find the camera overall in comparison to the S and other wee things like battery, speakers etc.

Yeah, was pretty shocked about the result.

I had contacted the HTC CS team saying I was sick of the their CS and sent that letter the Global Director of PR.

A few days later UPS turned up to collect the HTC One S for inspection but at that point I had already told HTC that I wasn't going to deal with them anymore. Had to explain this to UPS about the mix up and so I just sent the PR lady another email asking what the deal with UPS was.

About 10 mins later someone rings me up from the escalations team asking what the UPS story is about. I explain and he tells me that he'll sort out the UPS thing and whether there was anything he could do to help, I jokenly mentioned he wouldn't as I didn't have a HTC phone, his response was "would you like us to send you one?". Wasn't going to say no!

Ended up in email contact with the guy at the start of April and it was just going back and forth for ages, at one point I did think nothing was going to come of it as I had to keep emailing him for updates. He mentioned the low HTC One stock but that he had a demo/production one he could send me as a temp phone. Got it this Monday gone and I'm pretty chuffed with the result as you'd expect!

I'll give the camera a test tonight and see how it holds up. (I'll update the HTC One thread)

At least it was all worth it in the end! :)

Thanks! It will be interesting to see the results since the current one you have is a pre-production unit by the sounds of it, however, is running the latest software. Should help clear the air regarding if the early reviews/samples was down to both factors or just the one........

So my phone had been grinding my gears over the past week or 2, gradually getting slower and slower. It was getting to the point where i couldn't even unlock it sometimes because the screen would go black before the pin unlock screen popped up  I'd been doing restarts every day or so and no improvements until last night when i restarted it and suddenly it's back to being a snappy piece of **** Was on the verge of doing another factory reset but glad i didn't have to.

Not the slightest clue what the cause was though.

This is the kind of thing i was dealing with:

Fun right :p

Techradar have the one S in 9th place (out of 20), personally would have placed it ahead of the lumia 520 though, saying that, their list looks a bit broken anyway :p Some placements don't make any sense i.e. I would have put the one X+ ahead of the GS 3 etc. not given it 13th place

Anyway....here is what they had to say regarding the S:

There are few phones we play with where we think that we have the complete package and would happily give five stars. The HTC One S would have had five stars had it not been for the 16GB memory cap and non-HD screen.

Of course, it's getting on a bit in smartphone terms now, but it goes ahead of the HTC One X+ thanks to a) a lower price, b) a new Jelly Bean update and a design that we think betters even the HTC One. It's micro-arc oxidisation, and we challenge you to find one person who owns this phone who doesn't love the feel of the back.

It's not got a superbly high resolution screen, the internal memory isn't good enough for many and it probably won't go above Jelly Bean in terms of software.

But let's not get caught up with negativity here: if you're not bothered about a massive memory (which most people aren't), you probably can't do much better now for a mid-range phone. The HTC One S is a beautiful handset blessed with beautiful capabilities and is available at very palatable price points.

Picture time! :p Full size images via the links.

All of them have -1 sharpness and were taken using the macro mode

Congrats  The HOS is great for family shots!

Nope, I'd still take a cheap N4 over those two... The only ones I'm interested in are...

HTC M4 and Motorola Ghost (hopefully small but high end) or the Sony Honami and Nokia EOS (return of the high end cameraphone!) :)

hehe, very true! :D Shame more sites don't do something similar.

Very nice shot there, fast shutter is great

Likewise, still very tempted by the N4, the camera is the main thing that puts me of though :(

The M4 should be a nice step up from the S, I just hope it is using the newer SAMOLED panel by Samsung or the SLCD 3 panel.... only thing that is stopping me.....screen size, could cope with it though. Bit of a shame that the battery isn't a bit bigger either. All comes down to price in the end.

Render by HTC:

Honami should be very good especially in the camera department, I just hope that Sony sort out their screens though :p

Very much looking forward to the motorola phones, hopefully they can deliver an epic camera this time!

Nokia........ no android = no thanks! :p :D

How do you guys get such good pictures with your HTC ONE S?'s

Nice shots sarge, think you could make them any smaller though :D :p

AFAIK, nope :( Hopefully next month!

@Gavin

Reduce the sharpness to -1 and the rest is down to you! :p

- Always make sure you have nice lighting conditions
- use the presets if you're taking certain shots i.e. macro (close ups)
- touch to focus (sometimes this only works the best for certain scenarios and other times you are better of just "point and shoot" [wait for it to focus manually first] i.e. landscapes)
- HDR is good for low light/dark conditions (if you don't want to use flash), however, you need a steady hand and only best for non moving objects, also good for when you have an area where it is a bit dark and very bright i.e. taking a shot of a building with the sun right behind it, can also work out nicely in the conditions of Sarge photos there. Best to just mess around with this mode and see how it works
- if a shot doesn't come out great, try using the auto enhance effect in the stock gallery or a 3rd party app like snapseed, this works out very nicely if the photo is a bit washed out looking

I'm keeping my One S until a successor is available.

Surely there's still a market for us small handed men who don't like bricks in their pockets. I just want a 4.3" 720p HTC android phone :)

My hands aren't small but prefer the size of the One S and Razr i (4.3"). I think there is a a fair demand for a top spec phone but around the 4.3" size. Currently seems to be a ****ing competition who can produce the fastest and biggest phone?

HTC M4 I could like the look of. Only thing that let me with both the One S phones (and One X for that matter) was signal reception. Other than that the One S was a great phone - though battery suffered due to signal issues and struggled to last the day. Camera was great and far better than the one on the Razr i.

Hopefully Motorola Ghost won't be 5" Nokia?? As Nexus says "No Android, no Nokia" :D

@Sarge

hehe :D Would hate to imagine what it would be like with a 4MP camera  :p :D

@Richy

Indeed! :D Shame though as nokia make excellent handsets, would love to see android running on their flagship device and what their skin would be like

I am also pretty tempted by the mini one, however, the price needs to be spot on! If they can bring it in at £300-350 with the specs posted previously i.e. 720P SLCD 3 or SAMOLED (the new panel), S4 based processor, ultrapixel camera, 2GB RAM and a decent sized battery, I will be pleased!

Yep, there's a lot of ifs and buts. I'm fine with what I've got currently but can't help having a look over the hedge :D There's a lot of hype surrounding what Motorola are going to come up with next regards X or Ghost, but have a feeling we are setting ourselves up to be disappointed  Time will tell.

Not really read much about the new One phone radio is like? Are they any better? It is the one thing Moto seem to do well. Will the 'mini' One (M4) have an aluminium body and will its radio be any better than the One S, not to mention all you spec Nexus :D For anyone else reading with a One S and about to say their phone was fine well so was mine in good signal areas. It's when in marginal areas such as where I live I really got let down. The only sure way to find out is to get one and then it can be a little too late to find its radio for signal reception isn't quite as good as you hoped.
