*** The official HTC One S thread ***

Yeah it is very random for me when it happens.

I tried some methods last night like changing to googlemail.com but that didn't work and I ended up with multiple birthdays for the same person in my calendar and couldn't figure out how to get rid of the duplicate entries so factory reset was done.......

Have had to arrange an exchange for a new One S.

Mobile internet stopped working this morning, and I've done everything I can think of and then done it again whilst on the phone to support.

So I've got a replacement One S coming on Wednesday morning and I have to hand my old phone to the courier to send back to TMobile.

I've been in touch with HTC regards my mobile network issues. Told me to do a hard reset and if that did no good then if under 28 days (like how long has the One S been out?) return to where it came from for an exchange. Duly did so but forgot paperwork on first visit to shop. Assistant also asked if I had the phone for under 28 days ... again I ask how long have they had them in stock

Anyway, exchanged it for another and guess what ... it's the same. HTC have said they now would like to take it in for repair and maybe I should go back to shop for another One S, considering how long I have had it. I doubt three would chuck me out the shop :D

I've been looking into the signal issue and think when signal level drops to a certain level the One S reception of signal drops like a stone where as it seems not to bother the Motorola. Need a little more looking into. Long as nothing like trees, buildings and terrain affect signal it is fine. To put it in perspective we live about a mile if that from transmitter which stands above us a little but with clear LOS. In our yard signal is rubbish with the One S but go to end of yard and trees with LOS on mast and I get full signal. With the Motorola buildings and trees seem not to affect it at all with maybe a drop of one bar off full signal. I need to do a side by side test yet to see at what level the One S reception plummets. This is getting to be a deal breaker for me. I'll have to decide what to do if no updates are forthcoming soon to fix the signal issue. I may just cut my losses and sell it on Ebay. Maybe should have got a One X as it's not that much bigger?

For now I'm not sending it back to HTC and told them to get one off the shelf to experiment with. I can't think 2 phones can be faulty? Not sure Three will be keen to exchange a third time, more so when it works faultlessly in the shop. My take on my problem is anything that interferes with signal, buildings, trees etc makes signal reception drop like a stone when the Motorola side by side has no issues with reception. I don't know if it's the phone arial or firmware/software because occasionally I get full signal for a minute and then drops to one bar or nothing? If I throw the towel in with the One S, what do I get?

It's always wise to go and try everything in a shop but I would be genuinely shocked if you came back and said you thought the Galaxy S II was nicer. :p

You couldn't have been more right :D Much preferred the One S and so did the 2 guys in the O2 shop

The only alternatives richie is the galaxy s2 and galaxy nexus (quite a few users are experiencing issues with signal on the nexus as well though), but those 2 aren't as good as the S for hardware etc. or the X if you can stretch your budget and don't mind the size difference.

Samsung may be releasing a "mid-range" galaxy to compete against the S this month as well.

I would give it a few weeks to see what happens regarding updates/announcements to fix the current problems (if any.....) and if there is still no word or fix about the issues, probably be for the best to get something else then, unfortunately :(

It is a lovely phone, no doubt about it. It just has one or two teething problems which I'm sure HTC will sort once they've sorted out the One X.

Richy888 your mobile internet issue seems a bit different to mine, which just wasn't working. Where the mobile internet toggle switch is it was displaying a message saying "service not available" which confused support because from their end everything seemed fine, so I've got a new handset coming. Typically it's been fine today.

Otherwise, yes I'll agree the mobile internet signal does seem to swap between 3G and H a lot (well, it did when mine was working). But I'd rather that than it not work at all! I found over the weekend when it was working that it would be on 3G when I woke the phone and then when I loaded Chrome it would switch to H, and stay there.

I should have added that in our house it often will lose signal and then reconnect with an 'R'. I may still have voice but no mobile internet. This is with Three UK. After a while it'll reconnect again and lose the R (roaming?) and I'll get mobile internet back. Now Three tell me they don't use anybody's network but their own in our area and is of course 3G only. Quite what it is supposed to be roaming on I dunno? Also the 3G/H swapping does go on a lot. I can put the sim into my old Moto Defy and reception is strong? Do you think HTC forgot to put one of those old style pull out aerials on the One S :D

I'm really hoping they fix it because apart from the network issue 'I have' the phone is great. Only other phone I did 'half' consider was a Motorola Razr Maxx soon to be released in the UK. BUT the rebooting issue with the Defy+ and the none existent *support* kind of put me off

LOL! Sounds like it doesn't it!

To be honest, if I'm at home I'll connect to wi-fi but I'm hoping that a software update will sort out the 3G/H swapping when out and about.

Yes same here BUT I still need a reliable connection for voice be it in the house, around the yard or in the locality which is letting me down a little ... when it really shouldn't?

Signal wise the One X has been bullet proof for me so far, wifi has been excellent too.

In case you were considering that. :)

Wifi works fine for me with One S - which is just as well really

When I was exchanging my One S last week I had a look at a One X. I dismissed it originally thinking it too large. In actual fact it's not that much larger than the OneS?

Yeah, the One S is definitely (noticeably) smaller and more ergonomic but the X isn't exactly a lot bigger.

It depends on your hands and whether you think the extra screen estate is worth it or not.

A look round any One S forum worldwide it is not hard to find anyone with poor reception issues. Often the same tale - "my other phones work fine indoors but my One S fails to find a signal". My issue is more a weak signal on the One S than the 3G/H swapping and this is what is causing my trouble. What concerns me is it may a hardware issue like a crappy aerial and that it'll just get ignored in the end as they'll think majority of user won't have much of an issue. If it's firmware/software then hopefully it'll get patched.

Can any advise - got my One S on contract with Three UK. Not had it 28 days yet. What are my options if I decide it's not fit for purpose? I've signed a contract so maybe no getting out of that but what about a phone exchange? Not had this sort of issue before so what's the procedure?

TIA

First impressions are good - got my phone yesterday.
Screen is great - cant believe there are negative comments about this; massive upgrade from my legend!
Speed is phenomenal in all apps tried so far.
Build quality seems to be good except for my power button seems ever so slightly loose compared to my wifes (got same phones same day).
Negatives are all software based more to do with ICS I presume:-
Go sms pro or handcent wont display contact photos like they did on froyo in txt converstaions.
Facebook widget wont update unless I manually synch it?
Twitter widget the same very slow to synch - seems to be no way to speed up synching times?

So can anyone reccomend alternative widgets for faceboook (4x2) and twitter (4x4) that are better suited to ICS?
And an sms app that will display contact photos and have a popup with the message rather than having to pull down the notification bar and enter the app.
Also any good free games that will show off the screen/processor capabilities?
Regards

Go sms and handcent should display contact photos, go sms does for me, should be options in the settings for that stuff.

I am pretty sure that there should be settings for facebook etc. as to how often they sync etc. as well.

Are you just using stock sense launcher? The stock sense widgets for facebook, friend feed etc. should be pretty good for widgets.

Don't know much about facebook apps/widgets, but android pro widgets is pretty good along with friendcaster for facebook , not sure if it has a widget though.

As for games that are free, angry birds, gun & blood are all that I can think off. You can get better if you pay a small amount though, such as dead space, grand theft auto and shadowgun etc.

Also I figured out why some stuff was stuttering when trying to playback 720/1080P films, "wifi max performance" wasn't enabled :o Most files play perfectly fine now along with all my 720P TV shows/films using either MX player or BS player lite, however, 1080 MKV 8+GB still stutter, although I am pretty sure this is down to my crappy virgin superhub :(

Also to the people who have no problems with gmail and getting emails instantly, have you actually updated to the latest version? As for me when I got my phone, gmail wasn't in my apps list on the play store and so I searched for it and turned out there was an update and now it is shown on my app list, same for google maps and probably facebook and twitter etc.

Hi Nexus,

Got my replacement One S this morning and it seems fine (although my previous One S was fine all day yesterday, so I'm now wondering if there were hiccups on the network!)

As for GMail...yep, I've updated mine. Updated it on the previous phone too.
