*** The official HTC One S thread ***

I have had my one S for nearly two weeks now and have to say it is a fantastic phone, I have been quite fortunate that I have not experienced any of the issues read about online so far. I did buy a casemate tough case almost immediately though as the phone is very thin and slippery and I could see how easily it would get damaged or scratched, some change in my pocket left a mark on the back which luckily wiped off!

I did try the One x but thought I would probably find it to big for day to day use. The one S is a great improvement on my Sony xperia!

Awww man you should really get into the habit of dedicating a pocket for your phone. Phone+change makes me cringe.

Aye not something I would normally do, but just one of those moments where I dropped some change in my jacket pocket and after realizing what I had done it was too late! As I said though luckily the marks rubbed off, also had to use my right hand before the tough case arrived as my wedding ring marked the back

I managed to drop my One S 6 feet onto a metal drawer. It looked bad initially, there were 2 scratches, the biggest one being 8mm long by 2mm at its widest.

Some spit and 5 minutes of rubbing later, the damage is approximately the size of 2 screen pixels.

Nope pretty sure it doesn't, when you launch the videos for apps they open the youtube app.

When I had my crash, I wasn't use the flash player in ICS browser+

Quick write up on the MHL adapter :)

http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1071937-htc-one-s/page__st__15__p__594848957#entry594848957

MHL adapter arrived yesterday, £7.28 including delivery (£4.58 just for the adapter), which isn't badly priced :)

Has gone up a tiny bit since I purchased it though:

Couple of photos below, as you can see, we have a HDMI port (I just used my Xbox 360 HDMI cable and it worked fine) and the micro USB port (just use the USB cable that comes with the S) for charging the device at the same time as when you're streaming to the TV at 1080P it can drain the battery pretty quickly especially when watching a 1080P HD film or playing a few games. You can either plug the USB into a socket near by or into one of the TV's USB ports (if available) to charge the mobile. The adapter is very tiny and obviously very light weighted, you could easily carry it around with you in your pocket.

When connected to the TV (Panasonic TX-P42G20B) the video mode switches to "1080P, 24Hz and 16.9 aspect ratio". I haven't looked at any of the settings on my TV to see if I can increase the refresh rate yet but everything seemed very smooth either way, 1080P films played flawlessly using BS player lite and looked perfect, the games also worked great but looked very jaggy as they are stretched to 1080P, this is down to the apps.

Here is the info. for the film trailers that were played:

And lastly a quick video demonstrating this. Sorry for the quality and jerkiness of this video, it was recorded using a desire on stock 2.2, the UI and actions etc. are smoother than what it looks in the video.

Yes I know my gaming skills are atrocious particularly for Goldeneye :( It isn't very easy using the on screen controls! :p

One thing, which should be noted is that the sound is very low! (hence why you can barely hear the audio of the films and games in the video) When watching standard TV, we have the volume bar at about 3/10, where as with the mobile connected and playing content, I had to turn the volume up to about 6/10 just to be able to hear it clearly. Not sure why this is and I don't know if a different, more expensive MHL adapter would be better for sound level......

To sum up; I can't complain about the adapter at all given the price, does what you expect of it and the only downside (which might not even be due to the adapter) is that the volume is very low and has to be turned up a fair bit to compensate for this.

Nice write up Nexus, cheers!

Any decent soft cases for the S about? My old desire had this wrapped around it : http://www.exspect.co.uk/products/37/iPhone-Breast-Cancer-Campaign-Slip-Case/

Anything similar for the S?? Found an HTC pouch but its £18!!!

Thanks :)

For soft cases, the only thing that I can think of is the case mate soft, although not 100% sure if that is out yet for the S......

Or just a standard £3 one from ebay etc.

I see that HTC pouch at a place beginning with P ;) for £9.90

OK, so I'd like a second opinion here please :o
I've now acquired a new One S (Upgrading from a Galaxy S), and I'm a tad concerned about the fitment of the screen. Didn't notice this on the demo model I was playing with, but now looking & feeling the way the screen's been put in, it doesn't feel right.
Looking at the top end of the phone, where the screen glass joins the main body, there's a 1-2mm high lip, where basically the glass isn't flush with the unibody.
Should it be like this, or am I going to have a battle with Phones4U tomorrow?

(Obscene instore upgrade deal- 18months, staying on my current Orange tariff, paying £30pm with 500mins, ultd texts and 500mb internet. Managed to get a full £100 for the old phone with cracked camera lens which would have had to go anywhere else as broken)

Just checked on my S, the top part part where it says HTC and it is very small "lip", wouldn't notice it when just looking at it, but putting your finger over it and dragging it down, you can feel it, however, it is very small and I am pretty certain that is normal :p

If you can easily spot it, then maybe it might be a bit of a problem, but if the screen feels fine and isn't moving up and down that specific area then I personally wouldn't worry about it.

Apparently there is an update out around 55MB iirc (firmware is 1.78.401.2), checked earlier but nothing on my end :(

No idea what it fixes/improves, some people have said that the wifi, 3G/H problems are still there, a few say a bit better reception, others have said it is worse.

A couple of people have said that the battery life seems to have improved  :D

Yep, the screen's fine, no flex or anything, just felt odd when I noticed it.
Back on Sense, and boy it's better than the Samsung rubbish or anything else I tried over the last 18 months. I don't no why no-one else can build decent 4x4 widgets :o

WRT to updates, it's basically the normal for an update then. The whole spectrum of responses, when in reality it'll make little to no difference :p

Considering rooting at the moment, although all I've ever really used that for is adfree. Decisions, decisions, especially with the warranty void rumblings. We need a soft root :D

Then don't worry about it at all :p

Yeah, I put the stock sense launcher back on today for a bit and it is really nice and the widgets are great, but I miss the black minimal ICS layout so back on apex now! ¬_¬

Yup, pretty much :p

Same, I am going to give it another month or 2 till I do anything root and custom ROM related, maybe longer....... the ads and the 3 dot menu button on the bottom of the screen are the only things, which are driving me mad

The lip around the screen seems to be slightly more obvious in the upper right hand corner than the upper left, still only tiny though and barely visible. One thing i'm more concerned about though is the 'chipping' of the metal edge. Around the usb slot and the top edge above the speaker especially. I'll try get a picture tomorrow but considering it's only just a week old i don't expect it to look too good in a months time... Surely it can't be necessary to use a case to stop the cover messing up ?

Absolutely happy with everything else so far though. Got some decent use over the weekend with two ~5 hour train journeys mixture of games, browsing, tv programs.

Yeah, I have it around the USB port, only on the inside part though, so not an issue for me personally and the only way I easily notice it, is by having strong light shining at it :p

I didn't have a case for about 3-5 days and have had no chipping issues thankfully and hopefully I shouldn't either, as the mobile is in a tough case now, which covers all the edges.

BTW, if it gets really bad, you can return it and get a brand new handset from where you bought it or from HTC directly IIRC due to the MAO failure on some handsets :)

The USB bit is actually not as bad as the top of the phone. I'll get a photo tomorrow anyway when i can borrow my dads camera.

Couple of other things.. Do i need a certain app to be able to play .mkvs properly? Just loading them from the gallery the video is fine but no sound. General media player recommendation basically? :p Also a way to stream stuff from my PC over the network?
