*** The official HTC One S thread ***

I'd read a few people losing the GLONASS sats when they'd updated, no matter as I could see 17-18 (locked on about 10-11) sats this morning with some numbered in the 70's so seems its ok.

Can't get a full lock inside though even next to a window.

Carphone warehouse :)

As for that diztronic case it looks great but I'm worried you guys are saying its really slippy?

On the case issue I got fed up with the bulk of the OtterBox Commuter case and got one of those 'S Line Gel Cases' off of the Rainforest site or even the auction site for about £3 with p&p. I've been pleasantly surprised. Fits nicely, doesn't bulk the phone and both power and volume buttons work OK despite being covered. Has the required cut outs of course. Thing I do like is the checkering on the edges which gives some very handy extra grip.

I've now ordered one for my One X. The slippery little devil has slipped from my grasp in its naked form 3 times recently. Thankfully no harm done. I did buy a cheap gel case for it off Rainforest but the damned thing keeps turning on and even rebooting the One X in my pocket. You only have to breath on it and it activates the phone. The case is too tight on the power button so I've had to chuck it.

I have been using the One S (yes still have it) last week as I was having probs with the One X dropping signal. The One S actually performed pretty well with little to no signal loss. This week I've loaded up the Viper X rom on the One X and been using it with both my Three sim and a T-Mobile payg sim. Although the One X with Three sim has had a lot less probs with signal loss it still does lose signal but quickly reconnects. With the T-Mob sim in HSPA (?) signal strength as been about the same as Three but it does have the option to fall back to 2G so never seem to lose signal. Three doesn't have the 2G fallback and suppose is why I get signal drops? This seems to be the case with both the One X and One S. The motorola fares better and has better signal reception regardless? I wonder if I could get the One X and Moto Defy to mate - The offspring would be about One S size and have better signal reception ... now there's an idea HTC? Hindsight says I should have maybe stuck with T-Mobile but I can live with Three for now. It'll be easier than paying to get out of a young Three contract

Which phone do I prefer? Well the One X (but I still hang out here :D ) One X has a better screen and is a little brighter in full sun than the One S. One S is more contrasty than One X and colours are a little more (over?) saturated. This shouldn't happen but my One X has better battery life than my One S for some reason. This is purely on a normal days use at work. Some calls, txts, email and a little browsing. Not sure what is eating the One S battery but a 6am start is seeing me down to 20% or less by 8pm. Same situation sees the One X with approx 40% or a little more. One X has the better of signal reception and of course has more storage which may or maynot matter. Both are good phones (signal issues aside) but will probably let the S go .... eventually :D

One thing that was annoying me with both HTC phones was when I restore txts and call log the call log would would show all numbers called, received and missed but they all would be tagged 'unknown' even though they are in my contacts (on google). New calls after the restore then on would be logged as you would expect in the call list. I've now found out that if you restore the call log BEFORE logging into Google to restore contacts list then the numbers and name are displayed in the call log. If you have logged into Google and then restored call log and get the issue you can go to settings - accounts-sync - Google then hit the remove button (bin). Once this is done go back and log into Google and you'll find the call log populated with name and number and the 'Unknown' against every number gone.

BTW - I make mention of loading custom roms or 'illegal' software as HTC call it. I've read more and more lately that HTC are not standing by their warrenty if you unlock your phone and root. I know HTC warn you when unlocking the phone and now seem to be standing by that warning. Something worth bearing in mind should you be thinking of rooting etc.

I imagine that's because the One S is struggling with the signal a bit more (though it shouldn't make a giant difference).

Perhaps you've got a One X with an S4 chip...

Yep, it's 50/50 whether they will repair it or not. They have some, and not others.

Idiotic really, especially if the fault has nothing to do with the software or anything of that nature. It's a totally bizarre attitude.

If you are getting poor signal/no signal with the S compared to good signal with the X, that will be why the battery life is poor, as it is constantly searching for signal/trying to connect to towers etc. signal/voice reception/mobile data plays a HUGE part in battery life, if you were to turn on airplane mode, it is guaranteed that your battery life will triple or even more probably (when I was away for a week on the cruise I had airplane mode enabled and was constantly using my mobile for games and loads of camera usage etc. with brightness set to 50% most of the time (although when you launch camera the screen brightness goes to 100% automatically) and by the end of the day, I still had 70% left, could have easily got about 3-4 days out of it, where as back home with airplane mode off and that sort of usage it would have only lasted about 1-2 days).

Should install better battery stats to see what exactly is using the battery and by how much.

And yeah HTC don't like their phones being unlocked/rooted one bit, may try to act as if they are all for it but in the last year or so they have certainly become a lot harsher/stricter regarding it :(

Still not sure what to do about rooting etc. I don't really want to do it, but if HTC don't release an update or some announcement regarding fixes/improvements and JB soon, my hand will be forced to!

Well I know they warn you and it's up to you but it's a bit silly when they're the ones giving you the unlock code for bootloader?

4.3" Nexus Defy for November please! (In my dreams :( how about the Razr Maxx or Xperia S?)

Sarge, do you have a One S or are you just using a Xperia? You seem to lock onto a lot of satellites!

My first one was my One S in decent(ish) weather but I get similar results to Nexus when it ***** it down :D
Don't forget Glonass sats can 'disappear' quite regularly. It's still a new network so expect them to take it down for maintenance, upgrades, spying or maybe Tom_D keeps sending them back for pointless niggles?

The One X always has the better signal reception over the One S. There's a lot of places where I get 2 bars on the S but the X is showing 4 or 5 bars. This is backed up by what Network Signal Info records. Natch that when mobile data and wifi/bluetooth turned off you're going to get better battery life. I think I did install BBS on the One S but it is still hard to work out what is what when looking to see what is using battery so much.

The One X does suffer from the 'death Grip' quite badly. In our living room I get a good -91dBm (top line of graph) with nice flat line on the. Hold the phone by the bottom half of it and you can see what happens below

ftHgF.jpg.png

BTW, One S with same sim in same position is generally -105dBm where One X is -91dBm until picked up. One S would go on to drop to -111dBm when picked up in the same manor or lose signal altogether. From the graph you can see the One X has better signal/mast control and does not flit from mast to mast until it finds the worst one which is what seemed to happen here.

I'll not encourage you to do it for fear of your phone throwing a fault  I soon unlocked rooted and eventually loaded another rom up on the One X. Maybe I was too fast as didn't give it time enough to see if there was any faults. Touch wood I've been OK :) Can't stand that stupid 3dot menu taking up so much screen space for starters. I loaded up the ViperX rom on the One X which is a sense rom and gives a small speed boost. Not perfect but not half bad and has a lot of options for tweaking the phone. You can have as much or as little Sense as you like. Shame HTC are being a bit wooden with the warranty job. Not heard a lot on the update front for from HTC. There was a big one for the X supposed to be coming a while back but nothing has happened. As for the S then heard nothing.

Bah!!!

Reading that thread and no sign of anyone who got the update mentioning about being able to change the task of the multi-tasking window! FUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Some comments about the update:

2G coverage is the same as before or better? but as you say still fluctuations? Sent from my HTC One 2 S using Tapatalk

For more stable ... but still going down and up when he pleases, though less abrupt, this update is highly recommended but still it is the detail of the wifi and notifications. My serial number is SH24WW4 ...

So far my impressions are as follows: In my Fixed mobile wifi disconnects when I was using and I have more free ram and generally goes loose and run cooler. The cons ... well whatsapp notifications with wifi usually take about 3 minutes or so to get 2g mode ..... and still have enough coverage and loses signal fluctuations to stay in 3 stripes and soon recovers 5.

haha :D Very cool video!

Love the part where she shakes the toy around in her mouth and the way her ear flaps go down a bit just before she barks :D

It really is a great feature. Had a look on the market to see if there were any slow motion video recording apps and couldn't find many apart from like 2, however, they were just slow motion video players and they had **** reviews (surprised that there aren't any good ones available tbh, I imagine it will only be a matter of time though.........)

Also took my diztronic case off today and my god I really miss the "naked" feel/look of the S! :( Just love the design/feel/look although I hate the way the camera lens sticks out by a bit (a case fixes this problem).

IIRC the only reason he went with the GS 3 was due to storage as he has a long commute to work every day via a bus/train, thus needed more storage for films/tv shows, games, music etc.

So understandable his choice really :)

You hit the nail on the head Mate, the S3 was the better option in that respect, I have very little time to manage all my media for my long commutes and I rather transfer all my TV/Film and keep my music all in one hit.

The S3 screen was also a factor in choosing it over the One S, because the bigger screen makes for better viewing.

My first day without the One S and I have regrets selling it on, but needs must :(

I've not left mine on for more than a minute so far :p Pretty sure it will be on full time while i'm in the lakes though.
