***The Official HTC One Thread***

T-Mobile are phoning in the morning to confirm my deal so I wont have a chance to actually see the phone in person though I've been leaning more toward the black. Thanks for the quick replies gents.

I still am not sure about the colour (have yet to even see a HTC one in real life!)

I just love black tech. products, however, I find myself more drawn towards the silver for these reasons:

- won't show the fingerprints/marks as easily
- looks more premium
- looks unique and the areas i.e. camera lens, speakers stand out more

I've seen both in real life. I held both (silver in the left hand and black in the right) and compared them.

I think the black looks better and still retains that premium look. Renders/computer images don't do it justice.

Indeed, despite the GS 4 being an amazing phone, the majority seem to prefer the htc one overall, it is just a shame that it will be harder to convince the average joes :p

You see gsmarena's front page and what review has creeped back to the top.....again! :p

Well that's why they're called average joes! :D

I'm not really surprised about Gsmarena, they've been shameless when it comes to Samsung products. I don't really take anything for gospel when it comes to that website and look elsewhere for reviews and news.

Reading the Verge review they weren't that enamored by the S4.

My take on the Silver/Black HO....

I've always gone for black phones but the Silver is very classy and special and has a great look to it. Silver all the way for me!

Indeed and at the end when he talks about the HTC one, he seemed to appreciate it a lot more than he did at the time of the HTC one review.

If gsmarena don't update the htc one review at all or bump any other phones i.e. xperia Z within the next month or two then that will be the absolute final nail in coffin, 100% confirms that they are bias towards Samsung devices and/or paid by them. I am not expecting it to happen since I have never see them do that before especially twice?! But we will see..........

I still love how they have no article on Samsung paying people to trash the htc one online....

Exactly it's like the reviewer finally realised that the HTC One is a great phone and maybe it took the S4 review to come to that decision. Still either way it's a great nod to HTC.

It's amazing how many people are actually shunning the S4 to buy the HO, maybe they're all sick and tired of the plastic "not so fantastic" construction and bloat that dwells within Touchwiz.

I've bought Galaxy phones since the original Galaxy S but drew the line with the S4, enough was enough, looking at all those "extra features" I would simply get confused and would hardly use any of them. I just couldn't get over the looks of the S4, sure it's a great phone but this year HTC have really brought the fight to Samsung.

Regarding Gsmarena, why bite the hand that feeds them? They most certainly won't update the HO review or bump any manufacturers mobile reviews to the top, its so obvious that they are Pro Samsung, it reminds me of Engadget and how they used to get bashed for being Pro-Apple.

Same goes for Phonearena as well.

Now that I've got a HO that finally is up to my standards I've had an enjoyable time working out how Sense 5 works. I love how simple it is, clean and understated, the complete opposite of Touchwiz.

The speakers are amazing, I can't believe how clear and bassy they are, dare I say it? You certainly do not need an external speaker hooked up to listen to your sounds at home. I totally love this phone :)

@stoosh

Yeah the plastic and design and touchwiz design are the main things that have let it down. Personally I think review sites put too much thought/emphasis on the design/materials though.......

I think some of the new software/hardware additions are great i.e. smart pause, air view etc. and could definitely see myself using them but the other stuff smart scroll, group share/play, s-translate (which is basically google translate) etc. are just gimmicks and realistically how often are people going to use them once the new "OMG amazing" feel wears of?? After seeing smart scroll, it just isn't anywhere as practical/speedy as using your finger.

Yup, phonearena are really awful although I quite like their reviews but they report every single damn rumour even if there is no chance of it being true and then they seem to change their mind a lot as to which phone they prefer/think is better i.e. look at their camera comparisons....... they seem to hate the lumia 920!

To me it just feels like HTC have put more thought/consideration into making the HTC one/sense V5 regarding the design/build, zoe, ultrapixels, boomsound, blinkfeed (I don't like it but a lot of users/review sites actually ended up liking it), where as Samsung have just thrown everything possible into one package and to me it just feels like they haven't put as much thought into the handset/software overall.

One thing that I am glad to see is that a lot of review sites have been mentioning about the lack of unified feel throughout touchwiz when compared to sense, something that highly irritates me and it is something that a lot of apple/iphone users appreciate about iOS and its apps.

It is good to see Vic Gundotra enjoying the HTC one as well! Should help boost sales/popularity.

People using a case with this phone......:o

:p

Personally I would recommend, nillkin, rock or some form of a TPU case i.e. diztronic matte

I might just go for some sort of Neoprene pouch so I still get the phone out to use it. Just want to protect it from being dropped out of pockets or whatever really.

If you find a nice one let us know, as it's such a nice looking handset I'd rather not cover mine up 24/7 but I do worry about scratching it or the accidental knock off the desk at work :(

Right, I recently lost my uninsured iPhone 3GS. Initially I had assumed my best option was an iPhone 4S, maybe the 5? I then moved my thoughts towards a work colleagues recommended Sony Xperia Z. Googling around I started to get wind of the HTC One and the newly approaching Samsung Galaxy S4. I have now been put off the S4, not just for the plastic but the bloat it comes with, and the mediocre speakers, etc.

The external speaker always annoyed me on my 3GS, it as brilliant at first, but over a short time it became awful, as the same with the headphones. It seems the HTC One excels here. I'm slightly confused about the camera talk, but it seems the HTC One's is better than what is on the iPhones? I was impressed with pictures taken and shown on the Sony Xperia Z, does that compare with the HTC One?

Now I've made my mind up; I'm currently with o2 on a £10.99 a month contract. My contract was up in February so what are my options? Ideally I'd like to stick with o2, when I went in the high street store the other day they offered me awful prices, am I better to ring them direct? Threaten to leave? On the other hand when I walked into P4u and CPW they offered me good deals on the Sony (free handset, unlimited texts, calls & 1GB data for £32 a month).

Realistically what should I be aiming for? I don't want to pay out anything for the phone, so I'm looking at contract deals. I'd want at least 1GB of data as well.

Thanks :)

S4 will have great speaker if note 3l2 is anything to go by.. one of course is better but nothing to cry about! Both phones will be fighting for the title this year but htc is simply favoured by reviews! Kinda like s3 was last year when one x, s and a load of other devices were just as good.

Samsung need to stop putting out £600 phones with the sort of quality typically found in the £99 market if they wish to avoid the reception they appear to have got this time around.

If Mercedes released the new E Class with the quality and feel of a Dacia Sandero but the specification level you'd expect from a Mercedes, but priced it right at the top of the market then they would rightly get absolutely panned in the press. This is essentially what Samsung have done with the S4.

With the exception of the specialist stuff like the Phablets\Vertu the Samsung Galaxy S4 is the most expensive smartphone on the market right now yet it feels like one of the cheapest.

If your £10.99 tariff gives you the minutes/texts/data you need then don't bother with a new contract. Just buy the phone SIM free and it'll work out over 24 months with your tariff to be equal to a 'free phone and £31 a month' deal which is as good as any of the contract offers about if not better.

@Matt-Page

Yes the camera "overall" is as good as the xperia Z and iphone 5 etc. Not "better" though, I would say it is the most versatile camera phone to date but it comes down to your usage.

wall of text below :o:

it is pixel size VS megapixels essentially

http://www.clarkvision.com/articles/does.pixel.size.matter

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm

a proper 3-5MP camera would destroy a 8-13MP phone camera

Currently it is fairly hard to judge the htc one camera due to variable results, although a lot of the early review sites were using pre-production models and/or early software hence the poor results, however, the later reviews and user submitted photos are looking a lot better and the HTC one will/can still improve even further since the tech. is very new to HTC, an update is due very soon that brings multiple improvements. Nokia have provided 2 updates to their lumia 920, which has made a substantial difference (they use similar tech.)

The areas where the HTC one will lack are in:

- cropping and zooming in
- if you print photos out on large paper
- if you have a very high res. monitor

And it doesn't look as good in bright landscape scenarios, however, it will improve since there is currently an ISO bug and other improvements need to be made.

Areas where it excels compared to other phones:

- low light/night shots
- very quick shutter speed thus you have a better chance of getting a photo that actually has very little blur and also means you don't need as steady hands as you would with the GS 3, GS 4 etc. (this is a problem with phones when you choose to use HDR/night mode)

Can see some comparisons here and if you look through the previous posts of mine in here, there are more comparisons.

http://unleashthephones.com/2013/04...a-lumia-920-vs-the-htc-one-camera-comparison/

- macro shots

And as you can see here 1.28 VS 1.29, the photos are looking better, now imagine the difference when comparing that to the first/early firmware 1.26 or whatever version it was that the early review sites were using.........

the video recording overall is better than the GS 4, wider FOV, smoother, more detailed and better colours etc. (GS 4 will/should improve though as it looks worse than the gs3) Especially low light/dark conditions video recording. Better overall in comparison to the xperia Z

The audio recording is also better, the one is a bit quiet/less bass with normal noise levels, however, the gs 3 had a similar problem when first released thus chances are HTC will also improve it with a software fix.

Check anandtech review out as well as this thread.

The FOV is so much larger than the GS 4 too

Another thing that I consider an advantage is the photo size, if you take/have thousands of photos, then this will be a big bonus!

Not to mention you have all the cool/useful camera features i.e. built in filters (granted these can be done via 3rd party apps), slow motion recording (no app whatsoever on the market for this), zoe and all the features it comes with, way more features than the xperia Z and on par with the GS 4.

The camera isn't as revolutionary as what HTC make it out to be (at least not yet anyway....), but it is a worthy opponent to the GS 4, xperia Z etc.

S4 will have great speaker if note 3l2 is anything to go by.. one of course is better but nothing to cry about!

No doubt the speaker is good and as you said certainly nothing to cry about, but when you go by all the reviews/user opinions, videos etc. the one is a lot better in that area, pretty much in a different league:

If speaker is very important then why settle for something that isn't as good on the whole?

Not to mention that he had the note II facing towards the mic as well where as in real world usage the speakers will either be facing away from you, would be using your hand to amplify the volume or you will have the phone lying flat on a desk, in which case the audio quality and loudness will be further reduced.

For me, coming from an iPhone 3GS is a massive upgrade whichever phone I go for. To be honest I was sold on some of the features the Sony Xperia had, and the iPhone fan in me steered me towards the iPhone 5. I'm glad I've done some reading of reviews and chatting to other people about the phones as it has opened my eyes to some of the hidden features and benefits the phones had to offer.

Unfortunately for me I don't have the cash lying around to buy any of the phones outright, so a new contract/upgrade is the only way forward. I could wait and save but a the moment I am without a phone.

I shall call o2 tomorrow and see what they will offer me over the phone, I'll gointo CPW and Phones 4U as well and see what kind of a deal they can muster too. It seems as though Vodafone are best for call/data plans online, but I'd rather stick with o2 if I can for network coverage.

Thanks again for the replies :)
