***The Official HTC One Thread***

Commendable comparison Stoosh.

I'm feeling confident the HO will be an improvement over my GS2 in terms of general and indoor camera performance. And, that's all I really want. The Zoe functionality and the rest of the phone (design, screen, speed) are the big draws for me, as long as it's not a big step backwards, which it is clearly not, I'm going to be very pleased!

Annoyingly I've got a ten+ working day wait before I finally get mine via O2 and mobilephonesdirect.co.uk

(Q. anyone else pre-ordering through them or have done before - any reassurance that I've not made a bad move would be greatly appreciated!)

Jealous! :(

Sounds and looks great! PS that nexus 4 SP is awful! :D :p

Bah, you resized the images stoosh!!! :( :p Good comparisons though and much appreciated :) I think the htc one looks clearer with more detail captured overall, a bit washed out looking in some shots (especially the first few) but I imagine that is what the colours/lighting is really like?

BTW the N4 and one shot for indoor/no flash are the same, that htc one indoor/flash on shot looks impressive.

No worries Mate :) Yes with the first few pics the colours/lighting were really like that.

I didn't realise that I resized the pictures  I only uploaded them to photobucket and assumed it would host the pictures in their original form. :(

So how do I show the pictures in their original format?

I have to agree with you the Nexus 4 SP is quite awful but I'm very OCD and need to protect any phone from scratches, the HO will get the same treatment and even be placed in a case!

I appreciate your comments as you know the difference between a good picture and a bad picture.

So far I'm very impressed with the HO, this could easily replace my N4 as my daily driver. HTC have done a fantastic job all around, a few niggles though there's no option available to remap the buttons and the dreaded 3 dot menu bar appears from time to time in certain apps. I don't know why HTC insist including this monstrousity.

I'm kind of hoping that HTC get rid in a future update...

So the phone arrives with 32Gb of which 25Gb is available to the user, you get a free movie to view in HTC Watch "Thor" which I don't really care for as it's rather a mediocre film in the Marvel comic world IMHO.

It's running Android 4.1.2 software no. 1.28.401.7

The notification light is quite clear against the silver frame which I'm quite please about as when i had the white HOX you couldn't make it out.

All in all so far so good and this could be the phone that HTC need to challenge the might of the Samsung Galaxy train that is hurtling through and destroying everything in its path.

Just as long as HTC don't bring out a HO+ in the next few months, as I'll be extremely p'eed off :p

Okay so we should be seeing photos with less noise and more clarity but that is not always the case so sounds like it could be improved with software. Guessing we'll know more over next few weeks.

I thought it might be a software thing but have no idea what it could be now, either:

- software optimisation in general
- problem with the dedicated image sense chip i.e. conflicting with the rest of the camera or/and a problem with the software/drivers between the camera and the dedicated image chip
- lens alignment issue
- having a hard time producing the camera

And lots of other things that could be causing problems.

I really don't get why they didn't make the HTC logo the button (personally a hardware button, because they simply work!), and have a menu softkey to the right of it.
App switcher could be accessed by long pressing the home button.

@ stoosh

Not sure about photobucket, maybe it did upload in its full size and you just copied the URL/img code for a smaller image? Some image hosting sites resize the images even when you don't select the option for it. I use tinypic or imgur. Don't worry about re uploading them all though :)

You are going to ruin the gorgeous feel/look of the one by doing that :( Live a little! :D :p If I couldn't keep a SP or case on the one S, there is no chance that I would be able to with the one :p

Yeah that is extremely annoying, was reading about it the other day on XDA, apparently the code is still there for it, just no option "visible" to us so here's hoping.....

I imagine with the extra res. it doesn't look as bad due to it being smaller though?

Pfffft! I loved that film, one of my favourite marvel films :p :D

Nice, is the NLEd easier to see from angles as with the X/S as soon as you viewed the phone from an angle i.e. sitting on the desk and sitting back, it wasn't visible at all :o

Stoosh you've defo got the best out of the N4 there dude it looks up there with the HO in quality except for the dark areas where the HO really comes into its own, tho beating the N4 in comparisons is no real achievement for the HO regardless how well the N was used

Thanks Dude :) I've had the N4 for a fair while to realise that you need a steady hand and a lot of patience when taking pictures! And no it's not really a great comparison to make HO vs N4 as the N4 isn't exactly great when it comes to photography. I wish I still had my S3 to compare but I can't have too many phones! LOL!

Cheers Mate :) I think that now users have got their hands on the HO we can now get real life user opinions about various aspects on the phone. The S2 was a great all round phone and was the game changer for Samsung. It was quick and took decent pictures, the HO has quite a plethora of picture and video editing features and it'll serve anyone well who just wants a decent phone with a camera that performs fairly well. HTC have talked up the Ultra pixels tech and it's not as great as they say but it doesn't exactly under perform either.

I've never used mobilephonesdirect before but they've got a decent overall score of 8.2/10 on Trustpilot so they must be doing something right :D

They didn't need to change from the one S/X button arrangement :(

Holding down on the home button brings up google now/search.

With the S/X, you had the home, mt window and return buttons and then there was a tweak so when you held down on the MT window button, it brought the menu up.

Stupid htc for not keeping the same arrangement, personally would have liked on screen buttons though.

It is unreal the difference a steady hand can make.

That is one thing, how is the camera in general i.e. focus time, shutter speed, exposure/light metering and how does it cope with lots of colours in one scene?

Main problem with the Nexus 4 camera I have found is getting it to focus properly. It's actually pretty good once you get used to it.

Shame those images are re-sized hard to really compare. They both look about equal to me, I actually prefer the colours in the Nexus 4 shots but there's definitely no clear winner there apart from the indoor no flash shot where the One camera makes the outside looks way too bright...

Would like to see full resolution images though.

Still not sure on the camera from those pictures. Either way it's no step forward apart from certain indoor situations. :(

Guess it 'will do' though.

One camera makes the outside looks way too bright...

Common problem with the htc one phones unfortunately :( Had hoped that htc would have fixed/improved that.....

In order to avoid it or at least not make it as noticeable/bad you have to change the exposure setting manually.

@Nexus I'm so OCD you don't know. They take the severe p!ss out of me at work because of it. I can't do it, I HAVE to keep the phone protected! I remember dropping my iMate Jam years ago and it freaked me out, not as recent as your HOS accident though

If you couldn't put a case or SP on your HOS, there's noooo way that you're going to put it on the HO. The feel is so reminiscent of the HOS that you won't want to put anything on it. HTC have done a fantastic job design wise, even my family have been commenting on how good looking the phone is.

The 3 dot menu does still annoy me and even though it is high res it still takes up precious screen space. I can't stand it  here's hoping HTC do away with it in future updates.

I forgot to mention the speakers are damn loud though!

I just wasn't feeling the film, maybe I was in a bad mood when I saw it?

Thor 2 should be better as it builds upon the first film although I thought the whole interaction between Thor and Loki was very interesting and tension fraught.

The NLED is definitely easier to see, I had the HO to the right of me and the NLED was blinking away and is easy to spot. I had such a problem with the NLED on the HOX/HOS to the point where it really annoyed me so I'm quite happy that HTC have managed to sort that aspect out.

The camera is extremely fast, quick to focus, smooth when you chose different options, it's one of the fastest camera I've ever used. It handles exposure and metering very well, I've yet to point the HO where there are lots of colours in one scene but I'll get around to that and let you know. :)

I'll try and upload to imgur and get the pics on OCUK. As my first attempt was abysmal :(

EDIT: Original images for all those who want to have a gander

If I drop my phone, so be it! Can't have a case/SP ruining the lovely design/feel, on the likes of the GS 3 etc. no problem! A nice case is "necessary" then :p

Wasn't as good as iron man 1 and 2, avengers, but was much better than CA, hulk etc. films (IMO) Only other marvel film I loved was the punisher (tom jane's version)

Thor 2 is looking epic, can't wait , hopefully the new CA film will be better........

How about the quality of the audio?

Good to hear that, was my main and only complaint with the NLED on the S, didn't care about it not being RGB.

Sounding good, if you have time, be great if you could get a 1080P video up? :) with some noise i.e. TV, radio or whatever else going on in the background.

No worries :)

Samsung are having a hard time :p First LG and now HTC.

From reading around various forums, a lot of people are actually preferring the one to the gs 4 , definitely seems to be more interest in the one.

EDIT;

Thanks for re-uploading those photos stoosh.

Does still look like it lacks detail/clarity overall and doesn't seem to cope well with the bright light :(

Have you tried messing with the exposure, contrast, saturation, sharpness settings?

My thoughts exactly - it looks quite noisy to me. It doesn't appear to have the severe problem on the RHS that others have had though.

Nah, Samsung have put the kibosh on htc's plans by threatening the suppliers with a horse head in the bed. ;)

From WSJ via xda
HTC CEO Peter Chou has promised to step down if the HTC One is not a sales success, insiders claim, a dangerous commitment given reports that component shortages have scuppered the original launch plans. Chou put his neck on the line in a meeting with senior HTC executives late last year, sources close to the situation told the WSJ, only to find that HTC had been downgraded as a customer among suppliers and would struggle to secure enough casings, camera components, and other parts for the new flagship.

That’s the word from an unnamed HTC executive speaking to the newspaper, blaming the company’s fluctuating demands for phone parts in previous years for leaving the supply chain wary. “The company has a problem managing its component suppliers as it has changed its order forecasts drastically and frequently following last year’s unexpected slump in shipments” the exec explained.

“HTC has had difficulty in securing adequate camera components as it is no longer a tier-one customer” they concluded. The issue around the One’s camera is somewhat ironic, given the UltraPixel technology – which includes a custom-manufactured 4-megapixel sensor built to HTC’s specifications especially for the phone – is part of HTC’s key marketing message.

The company had originally intended to have the One on store shelves by mid-March, but was forced to rethink plans shortly before the intended launch date. Third-party retailers and carriers began complaining that the arrival of their expected stock had been pushed back to the end of March.

Meanwhile, HTC remains upbeat about its ability to get the One out almost on time, albeit perhaps not initially in huge numbers. “We…are working tirelessly with all of our channel partners to ensure that we can fulfill as many orders as possible” CMO Benjamin Ho said in a statement. “We will start fulfilling pre-orders by the end of March in certain markets and will roll out to more markets as we approach April.”

Chou isn’t the only person at HTC finding the company’s struggles are affecting their employment. The company supposedly froze year-end bonuses in 2012, leaving some to speculate that the money was instead being earmarked for a push in marketing around the.

HTC stock lost 85% of its value in last 2 years apparently, IMHO if this phone was given an even playing field it could capture a respectable market share, however these supply and manufacturing problems and low ad budget are giving it an uphill struggle.
