*** The official iOS 6 thread ***

I don't know why people are saying this is unlike Apple.

Bonjour, iTunes, Final Cut X, MobileMe, Ping, OSX Lion, iOS6... Apple have a track record over the last few years of delivering garbage to users. Its just the way their business is focused now. The difference is people are starting to wake up to it.

What people forget when slating Apple is all the awesome stuff they've also brought to the table.

I've not found a better system than iCloud with the syncing between devices. It's incredible - And, although this Maps thing is totally rubbish, I can overlook it with all the great stuff that iOS, and MacOS brings to the experience.

I think Maps is about 3 years too soon.

Besides the inaccuracy, which is the utmost important for any map software. What kind of map if it is not accurate?

An unusable one.

Street view is critical now to check what the destination looks like so I can recognise it when it get there.

Flyover is fun but that is it, fun, it is not even half as useful as street view. Sometimes when trying to get a good view of a building you can blocked by another one, or just block by clouds!

Less flashy, more substance.

Apple make nice hardware, its their software and support I have a problem with. I use my iPad3 all the time - its fantastic - but I've also got a bunch of first gen iPads that are less than a couple of years old (bought new) that are now teetering on obsolescence because of Apple's update policy.

And no, I'm not expecting all the new fancy features, I just want the basic fixes. The same fundamental fixes that I'm now having to weight up against losing my maps that I use all the time (plus risking the multitude of other problems reported in this thread) with this update.

It's become increasing obvious that software, to Apple, is simply there as a tool to push users to upgrade and more recently to stick it to the competition. The reason is simple - its not in their economic interest anymore to produce great software nor maintain the software they already put out properly.

The plot thickens...

Apple have made a statement regarding the Maps update...

They have at least $50billion in the bank. I get confused as it was $100billion before the stock dividend etc. and haven't heard any recent figures. But let's say $50billion.

TomTom is worth about $1billion. NAVTEQ (which is owned by Nokia) is probably around $2billion (it's hard to figure out after they were bought but a rough figure).

So Apple has been working on this for years and has enough money to buy out the other two mapping competitors to Google at least SIXTEEN times over. There isn't any excuses. Apple are the biggest company in the world, still acting like the struggling underdog, refusing to invest that cash in any meaningful way.

I've lost personal hotspot on my 4s, anyone know if we can revert back to 5.1.1, really need this. Unable to post a tickit with Apple, looks like a total **** up to me

I've found it

Go to settings--->cellular data-->setup Personal Hotspot.

its just hidden further in the menus, some where you would never really look

I just read Steve Jobb's biography.
And from what I understood about the guy from the book....if he was around today I'm quite certain he would probably have delayed the release of the Maps facility and some heads would have rolled at Apple.

to be fair sri is a big pile of crap and it came out.

Finding the new update faster on both 3gs and 4s

Used it to get to and from work in London yesterday. Didn't get any traffic data in the morning, no traffic data in the evening. Traffic data is visible now, today in the morning, but doesn't seem to be added to the total time, route one with heaviest traffic is shown as quickest, with tomtom quoting 25 minutes delay on the same route.
Accuracy is non existent. Some places in West Ken around BBC in White City are just green fields with few main roads marked on the map. That's in capital. Looks like overlay is very sloppy as well as in slow traffic several times in a row map though I was still preparing to turn when I was already 100 yards past that turn.

Shocking POI/landmark data, approach junction, 100 years old gastropub on one corner, 50 years old restaurant across the opposite corner. POI data shows out of sight hole in the wall take away microwaved pie and filter coffee breakfast place in a yard behind them as point of reference.

No total time, time to arrival, speed indicators as far as I can see or find.

Routing system doesn't understand tolls or congestion charge zone.

This tea pot is made from choco.

I used the turn-by-turn to get from work to home last night (for the crack) and I was quite impressed.

It's not going to replace the TomTom App (and I know Apple Maps use TomTom data) but it wasn't as shocking as I was expecting.

I suppose it helps that all of the places were in the correct location though!

People saying that Siri was bad on release are missing the point.
Siri didn't replace something that previously worked well with something that was worse in every way. This is my beef with the new maps.

I just noticed that Madjeski Stadium is listed as in a small housing estate in east Reading when it's actually 5 miles away. That's going to be fun if anyone uses the app to get to any Premiership games there.

Getting rid of my ip4 because of the upgrade... ridiculous. More stuff I dont want and cant delete, and the worst thing is that every time my mobile auto locks, it forgets my wifi network.

I think the problem with siri (and other voice activated things) is that they're often slower than actually just tapping the app and entering the info/opening it etc yourself.

I saw an ad of TV the other night for gestures on TVs to change the volume and channel. Sorry but you're going to look an idiot doing that when you can just pick up the controller and press 1 or + in a fraction of the time.

AaaaRGH! Where is my street view...?!

I am getting the distinct feeling that the new Apple Maps is a deal breaker. I used google maps and street view on my phone all the time - as I spend quite a bit of time in strange towns/cities looking for gig venues (I'm a musician). Stupidly inaccurate maps, rubbish postcode search and no street view is not the way forward.

I'm struggling to see how or why Apple would push an app with distinctly less functionality over what was previously there. I can understand introducing Siri as a beta from scratch, but pulling Google Maps and replacing with this...?!
