I can confirm this. My iPad 2 was bought in Canada and the noise cancelling microphone died. Apple store in Belfast swapped it on the spot.

It will probably be simpler to buy an iPad 2 on the cheap and then swap it - hopefully she won't notice the difference!

Looked at these in the apple shop earlier. Could barely se any difference between the iPad 2 and 3. The only person doing that upgrade either has silly amounts of money, or not very much sense tbh.

I use 3 PAYG SIM - you can get 3GB time limited to 3 months for about £11 on various sites and Sky Go works fine.

Right, on the check-list of things to get my Ipad fully functioning the way I want, I'm down to one last item:

Network Sim - Which is the best network people have experiences of in terms of travelling and having a great connection for Browsing and Sky Go? Orange, T-Mobile, Three or O2 for example. I have a T-mobile Sim already which they gave me in store at the time of purchase. Preferably looking at a pay as you go type deal, where I am not fixed to a monthly billing contract.

As always, any help is much appreciated in advance

Yes you can, I use mine in a MiFi so I don't need to resize.
