*** The Official iPad (Early 2012) Thread ***

Not sure tbh never converted anything with subtitles at all, I would imagine it would cope with them ok though.

Check on the official handbrake forums.

Cheers all

During today's financial conference call, one analyst asked if Apple would be issuing a press release about last weekend's launch sales numbers for the iPad. Apple refocused the conversation back on their dividend announcement but did reveal that they had a "record weekend" and were "thrilled with it."
/wants numbers :p

What have the default file sizes and formats that you have started with and how long has it aken?

got a 5gb 1080p MKV being converted now, says that its going to be 1 hour 17minutes.

I basically took the ipad option, then increased the width to 1920 to fit the source height.

You may not need to be reencoding the whole thing, provided it's the right codec (most are) then you can just repackage the mkv into a H.264 m4v container which will take a matter of a couple of minutes instead of hours.

How do you do that? I've got a few that need doing so will give it a try and report back.

I use playback, which has a converter built into it (you need to install the perian QuickTime plugin for it to work), and it streams everything to all of my devices.

You should get a 30 day trial if you just download.

I haven't looked into alternatives or windows programs as playback does it all for me.

90% of my mkvs I've been able to just repackage into a m4v container, lots of time saved.

See i'm running on windows.

I've been able to repackage before but found itunes still won't accept it.

Widdled it down to a possible audio problem it doesn't like about the repackage.

Playback will transcode the audio (which doesn't take any time at all) if it has to, so that might be why it works so well, no idea if there is anything comparable for windows though, I imagine there must be, just gotta find it :p

Ok, so that didn't work.

Tried to repackage a 3.5gb 720p MKV file into both an MP4 and then an M4V file and attempted to play through AVPlayerHD. Stuck with no picture on 0:00, so I guess that's out of the window now.

Funnily enough, it worked when I tried it with a repackaged (MKV to MP4) 45mb 720p sample video file.

Anyone know the best way to get a subbed mkv onto an iPad then? AvplayerHD doesn't like having more than one lot of subs on the screen at once :(

Was converting a 9GB 1080p MKV file this morning before I left for work, handbrake was showing 2 hours & 20 minutes for the conversion time I will check the final file size when I get home later on today, thats using the high setting for my new apple tv.

Cheers

I did a big test by transcoding Avatar directly from the Bluray via Handbrake using the High profile.

Took around six hours to complete and resulted in a 12.2GB file, for a three hour film (extended version), so about 4GB an hour. Quality was superb.

Guys,
My dad has just upgraded his iPad 1 to the new one and he is looking for a new spreadsheets app. He tried Numbers but didnt really like it. Is there anything else out there or should we just re download Numbers?

Thanks

EDIT: Numbers :p

Ok guys, I've been tinkering all night with this and I'm pretty sure I've sorted the HD playback.

Download XenonMKV and put your MKV files through that. It took 10 minutes with my i3 530 processor to output a 3.5gb 720p MP4 file that plays absolutely flawlessly through AVPlayerHD. This file is the one that was ridiculously choppy as an MKV file, now it's smooth as could be.

I figure a 10gb 1080p MKV would take around 25-30 minutes to output a perfect MP4 file on my PC. Certainly a lot better than the 6-7 hours it seems to take currently.

Give it a try and leave your feedback, hopefully this is the solution.

Edit - Just tried it with a 10gb 1080p MKV and it still only took 10 minutes! It works too. This was one of the files stuck at 0:00 with no video earlier, so looks like this is the way to go.

i don't know why people are saying the smart cover don't work. My one seems to work fine! And i've blessed with a neutral white ipad 3 and i've had the 4s replaced 3 times so now got a neutral tint 4s too! so no yellow or red.

Apparently Apple changed the polarity of the magnets in the smart covers mid 2011 so if you have an early batch they have problems, if you buy one now it's fine. But Apple say they will swap any that don't work in store.
