It's 26% more than in the US. How on Earth could they be making less money on it?

UK VAT = 20% and is included in the quoted price

US Tax is state-dependant, but 6-9% on average (a semi-informed guess) and not included the advertised price... I believe you can avoid it by buying online in some states though?

UK Import taxes are significantly higher than the States and all of these devices come from China.

Direct currency comparison is irrelevant.

Most likely Apple's mark-up is the same in both UK and US... but due to the excessive taxes we pay, I was joking that I wouldn't be surprised if they actually made less money (which I would summise is still a possibility - but there won't be much of a difference if there is one).

Don't assume it's the manufacturer! Look at the comparison in pricing of the 7970 cards in UK vs US for a very similar difference in price.

Therefore because of the increase in resolution you'll be getting less usable space than before and up scaling anything less than 720p is going to look poo.

I'm sure the new screen is fantastic, but tbh I've never looked at my ipad2 and thought 'oh I wish i could read this'

If you don't have a tablet it's now the one to go for, but for me, in the UK I'll wait for proper 4g before changing over.

The screen i see as an investment by Apple, I don't think you're going to see any further screen res increase for a very long time indeed. I'm almost 100% sure that the iPad4 and 5 will have the same screen.

But scaling will be fine on this screen, that would be down to software.

Agreed, people need to exercise self control. The iPad and iPhone really only deserve to be upgraded once every two years. The annual jump is never big enough to warrant the upgrade.

Normally I would agree, I bought a 4S and sent it back. I have a 4 and the speed difference was so small it wasn't worth spending the extra. Even comparing it to someones 4S at work the 4S wasn't always faster.

With this upgrade in screen though this time it's very very tempting. It's a pretty large upgrade.

If you don't need or care about that I think a good upgrade path with Ipads is to stay 1 gen behind and just buy a refurb as soon as the new one comes out. You are letting everyone else take the new adopter fee and getting exactly the same warranty and battery as new.

iPad to iPad 3 makes sense
iPhone 3gs to iPhone 4s makes sense
etc.

I have a 2011 13" macbook pro (feb) upgraded to 8gb and 500gb momentus XT. I was thinking about selling in anticipation of a new line, but then i though about it and really...CS5 Premiere and After Effects run sweetly and I just sat and re evaluated upgrade reasoning. Unless my needs change, I shouldn't upgrade.... hence why I still have a Samsung Galaxy S (1) mobile phone tech hasn't moved on enough to justify the upgrade....(but i will buy the next iPhone) :)

This depends entirely on what you define 'upgrade' as, and what your finances are like.

Obviously if money is tight then buying all the new products that don't offer an earth shattering difference is pure stupidity. If you can afford it though, why should you exercise 'sense' and use something that is clearly inferior for very little reason? You shouldn't.

Yup, a black leather one and because of the order change that is now coming tomorrow.

Nice, they aren't the greatest invention ever but they are invaluable for propping up the iPad in some situations and definitely for things like video calling (as a stand).

I think I'll get a red leather one with a black iPad, I think that looks pretty good.
