*** The Official iPad (Early 2012) Thread ***

Nice, they aren't the greatest invention ever but they are invaluable for propping up the iPad in some situations and definitely for things like video calling (as a stand).

I think I'll get a red leather one with a black iPad, I think that looks pretty good.

That will look good. They don't do Monte Carlo Blue so I've stay conservative with mine. Can’t you get yours earlier than the 23rd?

I can if I get it delivered to a UK address and then shipped over but it isn't particularly cheap and I don't mind waiting an extra week.

A blue one would be nice to match the car... you'd think they would do a colour similar to that.

This depends entirely on what you define 'upgrade' as, and what your finances are like.

Obviously if money is tight then buying all the new products that don't offer an earth shattering difference is pure stupidity. If you can afford it though, why should you exercise 'sense' and use something that is clearly inferior for very little reason? You shouldn't.

Even if you can afford one and have plenty of spare income, not everybody operates on the same wavelength of having to have the latest thing.

Why does the new iPad make the iPad 2 inferior?
It's not going to change what it's been able to do for the past year.

Is that a serious question? :p

The screen, it's faster, the camera upgrade.

The functionality remains the same but the quality of the interaction will be considerably better.

It's like comparing an old car to a new one. They both get you from A to B but one is obviously better than the other. Thus the old one is inferior.

Again what has money being tight got to do with whether something is worth the upgrade. Of course you should exercise sense when upgrading or buying anything. Well I do. Just because I can afford 1 or 500 ipads doesn't matter when I look at the price for an upgrade or buying something.

Just because I may have a lot of disposable income doesn't mean I shouldn't exercise sense when spending it. I don't like to waste money regardless of how much of it I have.

Where you seem to fixate on peddling out this if money is tight, or you can't afford it any time someone questions the worth of an upgrade. :D

You are a marketing mans dream. :p

That is only applicable if the upgrade is very small. My entire point is based on the fact this is not a small upgrade if you use your tablet a lot or have good eyesight...

It's very simple really and there are just a lot of people posting here trying to talk themselves out of it.

You are a marketing mans dream. :p

Again, why? This is a clearly better device and I'd like one... I can make an informed decision based on the merits of the new device.

I really don't understand those saying this isn't a big upgrade.

The screen improvement is MASSIVE... not to mention a faster processor and more ram.

I couldn't care less about the camera, but I'm still going to buy one :S

I use a iphone 4 with a retina display and an ipad 1 with a crappy old display ;)
Not once do I go from one to the other and fret about or even notice the dip in quality. There's nothing wrong with my eyesight at that distance anyway :D

I agree it's a substantial upgrade in screen quality but if you just use a tablet to browse the web, facebook and all that other social pap the graphics and chip upgrade are not going to matter. If I was even getting any slow down with the ipad like I got with my old 3G I would have course totally agree, but I'm not.

Which is why I suppose people try to justify to themselves if the extra is worth the money rather than because they are poor.

I guess it's personal opinion. I have an iPhone 4S and my Sister has an iPhone 3G and I can immediately tell the difference.

It's not about trying to talk myself out of it. :)

Robbo I seem to recall from previous threads that this is going to be your first iPad? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I've used an iPad 2 almost a year now, and it's been great.
The new screen is a fantastic upgrade, I don't doubt that for a second, I've never said that it isn't.
Given how the iPad 2 has been so good, do I need a new one because it's got a better screen? No. Is it going to change what I do with it? No.

I'd personally rather wait another year until the next one comes and upgrade then. As I said in my last post, that's just how people differ. I can afford to buy a new one if I wanted, but I don't have to have the latest thing.

Of course you can, those features matter to you, but when they don't matter to someone else it's because they cannot afford it.

If canon bring out the 5dmk3 for £3000 and I buy one, then 12 months later they bring out 'A new 5dmk3' with articulated screen and higher res lcd. I'm not going to buy one just to get the latest product if those features don't matter to me am I? To me it wouldn't make the product better as they are not features I would care about.

I wouldn't but it's not because I'm poor but it wouldn't fit my needs or offer value for money.

You of course would buy it because you couldn't stand to have a product you considered inferior because you would feel like a poor man ;)

I don't think £120~ or so is a lot of money for the upgrade considering that the upgrade is a big upgrade.

I think there is a very clear dip in quality coming from a retina display to any other type of screen.

Like I've said from the start, it isn't a must have upgrade, but it's a substantial upgrade that is worth every penny if you use your tablet a lot.

It's not about trying to talk myself out of it. :)

No, I have an iPad 1 and 2. :p

I very much value screen quality (above any other hardware feature) and that alone makes the upgrade worth it to me. It's not about having the latest thing when there is a clear, substantial improvement.

It was somebody else then who said they would only get one if it had a higher res screen.

I think Danny has hit the nail on the head though.
It's only worthy of an upgrade if the new features matter to you personally as an individual, and that's where people differ.

Of course, next years upgrade will be the substantial one, when they upgrade the storage capacity when everyone see's they can't store **** HD content on a 16gb ipad :D

;)

I've haven't called anyone poor or said they aren't getting one because they can't afford it. I've merely called into question their reasons for not getting one based on what they post.

There are some people in here saying it's a very small 'vanity' upgrade which to be honest is ridiculous. That is what I have an issue with, it's clear nonsense and they are trying to play the level of the upgrade down and talk themselves out of it.

If you don't think a massive screen upgrade on a device that is 90% screen isn't important, then well... :D

Of course, next years upgrade will be the substantial one, when they upgrade the storage capacity when everyone see's they can't store **** HD content on a 16gb ipad :D

;)

You mean base model storage capacity? 64GB will hold quite a bit of HD content.
