*** The Official iPad (Early 2012) Thread ***

Also for those people saying there iPad 1 doesn't slow down, assuming your running iOS 5 then I find it difficult to believe we have 3 in our office and all 3 get bogged down fairly often

You mean base model storage capacity? 64GB will hold quite a bit of HD content.

I would guess that they sell far more 16's than anything else? I imagine many people will buy the 16's and not know or consider how much space HD content will take up.

They have been using this size for 3 years now. I guess they needed something to upgrade next year with the chip. I don't imagine they could have done the screen and capacity this year and keep the costs the same. Next year I'm sure they can.

Of course you can, those features matter to you, but when they don't matter to someone else it's because they cannot afford it.

If canon bring out the 5dmk3 for £3000 and I buy one, then 12 months later they bring out 'A new 5dmk3' with articulated screen and higher res lcd. I'm not going to buy one just to get the latest product if those features don't matter to me am I? To me it wouldn't make the product better as they are not features I would care about.

I wouldn't but it's not because I'm poor but it wouldn't fit my needs or offer value for money.

You of course would buy it because you couldn't stand to have a product you considered inferior because you would feel like a poor man ;)

j/k

That's hardly a reasonable comparison.

To use the camera example, a better comparison would be Canon bringing out something with a sensor that can do 4x the resolution at the same or better image quality.

Well, it seems that Apple and Google are really pushing the whole cloud storage/streaming thing for this, but I think people may fail to realise that for HD content, you're going to need to be on wifi as currently no mobile network infrastructure in the world can support it properly (save for a few 4G areas in the USA).

People, I need your opinion. At the moment I have a 4s but is there an equivalent that i'd be happy with? Had an iphone 4 and really shouldn't have upgraded because simply...it weren't worth it.

Can you tell me what with and I can test mine?

Mine doesn't get bogged down on anything. Load times are reasonable and all 20 games I've loaded on mine run perfectly, from PvZ to dead space, NFS etc. All my sons interactive apps likewise. I've had a few crashes web browsing certain sites but looking at apples forum that is a known issue and is happening on the ipad 2 as well.

Of course it will start to have issues as newer stuff comes out, right now though I honestly get no slow down, where as I said my 3G was laughably slow in comparison :)

Of course it was a reasonable comparison, I was comparing features on both that wouldn't be a worthwhile upgrade to ME. A new sensor as you suggested would be worthwhile. :D

Yes and good for them, I don't use it except to back up contacts occasionally. Hell will freeze over before I trust anyone except myself to back up my data. I'm certainly not putting it in their hands :D

See, given that the screen itself is the only interface with an ipad... to me, the screen is just as relevant as a new sensor :p

an equivalent mobile phone... :) hate android but don't know how ice cream sandwich factors into things?

There is no Android phone that can compete with the 4S that isn't a high end (therefore fairly expensive) one.

Maybe the Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone? They are good and should be a bit cheaper, but still fairly expensive.

The new iPad... not iPad 3..? Hrhrhr.

C'mon Apple raise the bar, it's an original iPad with a better processor, screen and camera. iPad 3D would have been pretty cool with a 3DS style lenticular display.

As an Apple user I'm getting increasingly sick of their product updates. I bought an iPhone 4 last year, still really happy with it, would I buy a 4S, not a chance. I have a 2008 MBP which I adore, though I'm not getting on with Lion (had it installed a month or so now).

I consider myself a Pro user (C4D, After Effects, Premiere, Logic etc) but the delayed arrival of the new Mac Pro, extortionate prices for the MBP I want and my experiences with Lion are all pushing me away from the brand I used to once love.

This is why we need competition in the market, I could be wrong and please correct me if I am but there is a good chance that until the end of the year hardware spec wise there will be nothing that blows the iPad out of the water, the Galaxy Tab wasn't super powered last time round and only other thing is the Transformer Prime. Until that is changed and Apple know that within a few months there will definitely be something better they will continue to keep on upgrading in the way they do. The people who care more about specs don't make up a large % of the Apple fans so Apple will keep upgrading by the smallest amount they can get away with because they know they will still sell millions.

Windows 8 and ICS on the higher power Android Tablets will hopefully shake up the market and Apple will then respond accordingly. I'm not really a conventional geek in terms of favouring brands but we need Windows 8 to succeed here because despite what people think on the desktop front Windows are still king and having a similar interface on Tablets and then on XBOX might convince a lot of people to change or get those sitting on the fence to actually invest in a tablet.

Could we have an updated first post with the specs, prices and release dates in. Would be nice to have all this in one place...

Come on OP, due your duty :p

thing is to me this is a better upgrade (coming from a 1) than the 2 was, and i could never understand why people bought the 2. The extra horsepower of the 2 was never needed, i skipped it, and now feel the 3 offers enough of an improvement.

But then i had a 3G, skipped the 3GS and bought a 4, will skip the 4S and buy a 5. Doing it this way enables you to get appreciable increases, and a 2 yr life cycle.

Similar: 3GS to 4S, iPad 1st to 3rd.

Hardware wise the 3rd gen iPad is nothing special apart from the screen and battery (4x as many pixels cancels out 2x GPU upgrade and the modem/screen cancel out the 1.7x battery increase)
Right now phones like the HTC One S/X are faster for everything apart from gaming and maybe a few heterogeneous apps.
The shift to cortex A15 type architecture (esp quad core tablet SoCs) will signify a huge performance leap in 2013.

So the question is...

How many people really want a more productive tablet OS? (The direction both Android and W8 are going) or will 'coffee table' simplicity still rule?
