*** The Official iPad (Early 2012) Thread ***

Really, seriously? you would swop your iPad2 for then newer iPad3 simply for the screen?

Perhaps you should have grown up in the days of two channel monochrome TV as I did, 12" screen with a huge magnifier on the front. You just might appreciate the screen on your iPad2 then.

I grew up with an Apple // and a green mono screen....I'm a tad older than you maybe give me credit for :)

But yes, a better screen would be the thing that makes me move up, not maybe right now, that depends on pricing and residual value of my ipad 2, but eventually...I think the retina display on the iPhone is wonderful and that's what I'd most like to see on the iPad....

Why because you say so? everybody has an opinion, lets not pretend anything we post here is anything more than just that.

Right so you will not even acknowledge that other tablets have any advantages over the ipad 2 even after I've pointed some out and that there is infact competition?

That says allot about you imo.

The only "advantage" you pointed out was an improvement in screen resolution... something that is going to be debunked in the next release

I find the screen more than adequate for browsing and emails etc. For anything else I simply mirror through ATV2 onto our 42" Plasma. I don't use my iPad for anything else.

It might be adequate... but better is better  If everyone had that opinion, technology would stagnate... you're a strange strange old fart :p

The issue is that as a complete package, there is no real competition. The iPad is the best device.

As I mentioned earlier, if you're after something specifically for flash content (which would be bizarre considering how poor it is), or after something for watching your illegally downloaded video content (;)), then an Android tablet could quite easily be a better option.

Aside from that, the gulf is so large that I know a lot of Android fans who will readily admit that currently, the iPad is comfortably the best tablet. That says a lot. :)

I disagree, best tablet currently available is the Transformer Prime with ICS.

Quick comparison

Transformer Prime

+ Better screen (IPS+ improved outdoor viewing)
+ Higher resolution plus better screen ratio for HD content
+ Faster CPU
+ More memory
+ Much better camera with flash and 1080p recording
+ SD card slot
+ Flash support (thousands of sites still use it)
+ Lighter and thinner
+ Android Market Exclusives (yes there are some)
+ Better Loud Speaker
+ Stock video/music player supports more formats
+ Micro HDMI

iPad 2

+ Faster GPU
+ App Store Exclusives
+ More apps available (Could be wrong, I have no idea what the current numbers are)

Beyond this you are left with subjective comparisions about which interface, OS and design you prefer. Also iTunes which I hate but some like it.

Seems pretty clear to me which is a better all round Tablet.

*rest of post*

Then that is what you should buy.

All you've done there is taken a number of different things and broken them down to make a case for the Prime being better.

While the Prime is very good, it's only going to appeal to the very small segment of the market who care about some of those features. The extra power for example means absolutely nothing and seems pointless to have, and things like HDMI support are barely used at all.

To counter that you've generalised the iPad's advantages to make them seem insignificant, when as I said, when using the two devices the iPad is clearly better as an overall package for someone not requiring a specific more advanced feature provided by the Prime.

The Prime is also a lot newer, and the iPad 3 will be its rival (not that there will be any competition for a long while yet).

I'ved used them both myself, I don't see how it's clearly better at all, but discussing the interface is just too subjective, you either prefer one or the other, theres no right or wrong answer there.

Asus are releasing an updated model with an 1080p screen soon, also Samsung are rumoured to be releasing a new Tablet to counter Apple, as you would expect them too.

Obviously as someone with a very intense dislike of everything Apple, you are never going to prefer an iOS device. Which I why I feel I'm wasting my time even replying to you... :p

Again with the specs. Apple have never been about specs, and they never will be. They will take the most appropriate technology available at the time and use it in their products. As well as this, they tend to make other improvements too. A good example of one such improvement is the iPhone 4S being late the party of the next-gen phones, but having the best 8MP camera and video recording available currently despite using similar hardware to other devices.

I think you'll find the vast majority of people in agreement that as a tablet OS, Android hasn't really got going yet. It will no doubt start to make some progress now with ICS out.

Apps are arguably the bread and butter of tablets at the moment, and Android has an absolutely terrible selection compared to iOS. It has taken a very long time for Android apps to catch up to iOS on phones, it's still lagging behind even now.

Edit: Thought this was the MBa vs. Ultrabooks thread, disregard this post :p

Saying that I'd kill for something in the same form factor as a MBA 13" with a 1080p screen (that doesn't cost >£2000), the usual 1366x768 (or even 1440x900) is just too low for Photoshop/Video editing which would be my main uses.

It's ridiculous to still have that kind of res/TN panels when there are 720p PHONES, and so many tablets with IPS based displays.

Total nonsense, if they release a device with the best features I'll say it's better, simple as that, they havent done that for a while.

I decide what features I want, not Apple. :D

If all you are interested in are cutting-edge hardware specs and if user experience and general quality mean nothing to you, then you'll never buy an Apple product.

Exactly. So many consumers fall into the same trap that the hardware manufacturers do, in thinking that specs make a good product. Utter rubbish.

A good product is all about looks, feel, usability, intuitiveness and content. Apple has everyone else nailed in all these categories which is why their products continue to dominate the market. Whilst Android phones have come on leaps and bounds lately, the Android tablets are still miles behind the iPad in actual use, something I've seen reported in numerous reviews.

Each to their own though :)

Back on topid, I have an iPad2 16GB Wifi but will be upgrading to the iPad3 for a number of reasons. The screen is one of the main ones but I also want more space and 3G so will be moving to a 32GB 3G model at the same time :)

rough guess at prices guys ? for wifi only ipad 3
wife has said she would buy me one, if i think WE as a family would benefit from it lol
hmmm let me think, sure we will benefit

No one can say.. Some say it will be more expensive because of the higher res screen.

iPad 1: £430 new
iPad 2: £400 new, think it can be had for like 380 even
(16GBs)

The impression I get of you and others here is you'll just accept whatever Apple spoon-feed you and then make excuses later for whatever features it lacks.

Absolutely not, but I find it easy to understand why they do what they do.

As for you, people only need to look up your posting history in this forum and they'll see that you only post to criticise Apple and their products.

Nope, I posted in other sections also, kind of lost interest in PC Hardware as there hasnt been much need to upgrade for a long time so allot of recent posts are in the mobile sections.

Not that post history matters anyway.

But your problem there is the (probably apocryphal) Henry Ford quote - if he'd asked his customers want they wanted, they'd have said a faster horse...

Apple are in many ways not a technology company - product design for them is 'what should it do' and 'how should it look', once they've figured those two out it's a matter of what technology they need to achieve it. Personally I think that's beautiful. Technology is not an end game, it enables things.

Far too many companies have never understood that technology for it's own sake doesn't have a big market. While I understand the technology better than most, I also don't care about it with Apple devices, the iPad does lots of things well out of the box and with little effort, who cares what processor, memory it uses to do it? Well some people do but I don't and I can't claim to understand why people do (do you want to play top trumps with it or actually use it?).

Most of this also falls into the comically simplistic and stupid right/wrong mindset. There are arguments for and against having an SD card slot. There is no *right* answer or magic formula to say whether it should or not. It's a judgement call. Either it's obvious and largely everybody agrees or it's not and about half of people do. That's life, why would Apple's design choices be any different?

Of course it matters. All of your posts in this forum have been moaning about Apple.

You're either trying to wind people up, or you have some kind of strange obsession with posting about things you have no interest in.

You obviously don't want an iPad 3, so why are you sat in here complaining about it constantly?

Very well put (as always).
