A lot of this is down to the maturity of both iOS and Android - you buy a new phone from the same manufacturer and everything you interact with is exactly the same. I can pick up my iPhone 6s and have (more or less) exactly the same experience as I can with my iPhone 12.

The only reason to buy a new phone these days is because your old one's battery is dying or you dropped the phone

Battery is £69 for a replacement from apple themselves and its given my phone a new lease of life.

Exactly that. I was looking at the iPhone 13 as an upgrade from my iPhone XS with a dwindling battery that's had me caught out once already. Aside from 5G which I could take advantage of a bit, there's no point. I'm going to have a new battery fitted and wait for the 14.

So looks as if people will also be able to murder their videos as well as their photos with the portrait mode.

Portrait mode still sucks IMO. It gets it wrong most of the time and the rendering is lame. Give it 5 years machine learning will be able to do it properly on any photograph without the need for the depth map but for now shooting in ProRaw or just standard is the way for me. To be honest you still get quite good bokeh off the lens naturally in the right situations, if you use the rear facing camera to do selfies you can get images that absolutely blow the front facing portrait mode out the water.

I've got an iPhone 11 and I really want to move to a smaller phone. I was intending on waiting for the 13 mini but I can get a 128gb 12 mini for £35/month with no upfront and I will admit I'm tempted.

Any clue what the 13 mini might be for 100gb or unlimited data in 128gb size? I'm thinking closer to £45/50? I don't want to find out the new phones are significantly better but I feel like it's an 'S' update this time around.

Eee-oop... Long time no see. Can't answer your question but are you still at the same place?

Have you considered getting a SIM only contract and paying for the iPhone 13 on the iPhone Payment Plan? That’s £31.20 over 24 months.

Long gone mate! The shop physically is still there, but that business went under (quite a while after I left). I think that branch was profitable but some of the others weren't. It's under a different APR now and a friend of mine is running it. I do something completely different these days.

Then I'm looking at about another £15 at least for my SIM though. I'm not totally against paying £45/50 a month for a phone, in fact my current phone was literally in the exact same way that you mentioned, but it would be nice if it was lower. £35 a month all in is a nice price imo. I just don't want to get grumpy when the new one comes out and I haven't got one, but whether I will do is a question only I can answer isn't it?

Please could you direct link to this? The only thing I can find is the iPhone Upgrade Program which is about £35 a month!

I bought the mini as I have long complained about the size of phones. I wanted something no bigger than my old iPhone. In hindsight, it wasn't a mistake, but I could have gotten on with the regular 12.

The mini has a larger screen than the iPhone 7 but feels very small, and those hard angled edges aren't very nice in terms of looks or handling. Though unlike the 7 they do help the phone from jumping out of your hand. The regular 12, would have been the perfect size.

As to the 13, aren't they dripping the mini anyway and just upgrading the SE?

Is there any news on FaceID? I've ranted about it in the past and it's still as poor as ever given 2 years of wearing mask, and even when not, the fact that you still on occasion have to enter your unlock code manually.

Seems the 13 will have a mini variant, but likely the 14 wont.

As you said though, the regular 12 size actually feels great imo (I use a 12 pro) and the mini is actually too small

I doubt it’s going anywhere. I’ve found it to be much more reliable than TouchID.

I can be wearing a hat, I’ve had a huge beard (we’re talking six inches of growth), I can go from bearded to clean shaven, I can wear my glasses, I can not wear my glasses. Now it works with a mask on, any style of mask. It very rarely fails.

With TouchID, the slightest amount of moisture on my finger, it fails. It fails in the winter when I’ve got gloves on. It fails when your hand is cold and your fingers are a bit pruney. It’s utterly garbage compared to FaceID. I didn’t expect FaceID to be as good as it is but it really surprised me. I wouldn’t want to go back to TouchID.

The only improvement I want from FaceID is for it to work in landscape mode.

Mine doesn't work with a mask on.

Think youre overrating FaceID a bit here. The angles and distance are a big issue for me with face ID and only works when its right in front of your face. For example when i keep my phone on the desk and just want to peak at it, touchID is much better suited.
You're right in the sense that when its right in front of your face it rarely ever messes up, unless you happen to be slightly looking away or use it the dark perhaps (ive used it in bed sometimes and it doesnt register)

Ideal scenario would just be to have both, and have it so either can unlock it depending on use case

I like FaceID - it's fast and in my use case it's reliable. Sometimes it stutters if I'm wearing headphones or have a toothbrush in my mouth (yes I occasionally look at my phone when I'm cleaning my teeth), but mostly it's great. When my phone is sat on my desk and I just want to look at something, I have to pick up the device which adds a physical interaction I don't need, along with a tiny additional risk of dropping it.

The Android in-screen fingerprint readers I've used were okay, but sometimes frustratingly unreliable. With newer technology and increased reliability they should become better than FaceID in my opinion. It may be that the newer readers are already better, but I haven't tested one. Incidentally, I also found TouchID to be overrated and it's not like my fingers are always filthy or dripping with sweat. Press-buzz-try again. Press-buzz-try again. Etc.

Quick one ... not had an iPhone since 4S yonks ago, will they be doing a really big screen with the 13?
Assume you can't add a micro SD? Got about 300gb of music on current S10+ you see.

The 13 Pro Max is what you will want for the biggest screen, which is 6.7". Currently 512GB is the largest storage option, but rumours suggest there will be a 1TB option. The 1TB I would image would be about £1600-£1700.

The 512GB option should be more than enough, that costs £1400 currently. Apple usually keeps prices similar between models, so the 512GB 13 Pro Max should be £1400.

Crikey! Thats a grand more than my S10+ cost

The S10+ is an early 2019 phone right? That would be comparable generation wise against the iPhone 11 Pro Max, which would be a lot cheaper than a 13 Pro Max.

Galaxy S21 Ultra with 512GB is £1329.
