It's not like a comparable Samsung is much cheaper (if at all).

The poster was talking about his 300Gb collection of stuff and I pointed out that Apple charge £200 per 256Gb of storage, so they're going to take his eyes out if he wants 1Tb. Samsung charge £100 per 256gb, which is still excessive, but not laughably terrible.

He'll be fine with 512GB tbh.

Fancy switching from Samsung. Seen a 12 pro max 512gb for £1100, or hang on?

Think youre overrating FaceID a bit here. The angles and distance are a big issue for me with face ID and only works when its right in front of your face. For example when i keep my phone on the desk and just want to peak at it, touchID is much better suited.
You're right in the sense that when its right in front of your face it rarely ever messes up, unless you happen to be slightly looking away or use it the dark perhaps (ive used it in bed sometimes and it doesnt register)

I'm not overrating it at all, just describing how I find it. When my phone is on my desk, it's on a charging cradle so it's facing me. I look at it, reach out, tap and swipe up and it's open. Every time, every single time.

It's not supposed to work if you're looking away.

It works in the utter pitch dark. I've picked my phone up in bed in the middle of the night in a room with blackout curtains and it works. Again, every time. If it doesn't work when you're in bed then there's a very good chance that you're holding it too close to your face - I speak from experience here, when I first got a phone with FaceID, I'd pick up my phone in bed and try and use FaceID but it'd fail. I figured out pretty quickly that's because I was holding it too close. Just move it a fraction further away so it can actually scan all your face and it works.

Mine doesn't work with a mask on.
it does if you have an Apple Watch. Do you have an Apple Watch?

I agree with Feek on FaceID - it's miles better than TouchID and is best in class, especially when paired with the Watch.

Is there any news on FaceID? I've ranted about it in the past and it's still as poor as ever given 2 years of wearing mask, and even when not, the fact that you still on occasion have to enter your unlock code manually.
I doubt it’s going anywhere. I’ve found it to be much more reliable than TouchID.
I found on Android that I had to occasionally enter my Pin despite having fingerprint and face registered so this is nothing specific to the iPhone.

As a personal preference I’d say FaceID shades it over TouchID and especially so on the phone. I have a 2018 iPad Pro as well as the Air 4 and I can see the merits of either on the iPad but on a phone FaceID is the winner for me.

As has been mentioned TouchID is limited by the digit being used. Every fingerprint scanner I’ve used has been ok functionally but the instant your thumb is either damp, too dry or maybe has a small cut or hack (I get those a lot) then the scanner is rendered totally useless.
When the iPhone is in front of your face the FaceID works every time.

Oh yours is on a charging cradle so you can see it face you, whereas mine lies flat hence the issue!

I think you may be right about it being too close to my face in bed sometimes then, as there were several times it would work in pure darkness, whereas other times it does not.

Either way I do think you need both for the most ideal scenario and can be used in every use without issue

I could accept both (although would still much prefer FaceID) provided it was a capacitive fingerprint scanner built into the power button like the iPad Air 4.
Any sort of under display scanner would be nothing but a nuisance.
IMO under display scanners, be they ultrasonic or optical, are not 100% reliable and unless Apple have figured out a way to make one that IS 100% reliable then I can’t see it happening.

How about a turn for the books - what if Apple released two models - top of the range, and a more 'budget' entry level system to the iOS ecosystem(that had an interchangeable battery, and cheaper than the current S models).

There is no chance they’re releasing an interchangeable battery, that’s the only thing that people with relatively new phones are using as a reason to force themselves into an upgrade.

And then pigs will fly!

Hoping the iPhone 13 announcement isn't too far into September :p still running my XS and want to know if I'll be getting a 13 or just paying for a battery replacement on this and hope the iPhone 14 offers more features.

I'm running an XR, whats your battery efficiency at the moment and how long have you had it?
