Are you getting an iPhone 15?

Mine came Friday but I still need a case so haven’t transferred over yet as I don’t want to take it out naked (it’s like holding a wet bar of soap as always).May have to use a sock for now…

Debating whether to use a screen protector this year given nobody seems to have made a proper edge to edge coverage on yet.

Gonna pick up a regular 15 tomorrow from Apple MK while I'm in town. I think I can adjust to the 60hz, never had an issue with it on my iPhone 13 mini that I had for over a year. Gone for the blue 256gb.

3 times today I've had the 256Gb raw 15 Pro in my basket, I just can't bring myself to click buy now..

I actually ended up going the other way! Always been jealous of the size and weight of my wife’s 13 mini so I picked one up for myself after returning my 15 PM.

Setup my 15 PM yesterday and very happy. Not yet sure if I will keep always on display enabled. It is supposed to switch off automatically in certain situations to save battery e.g. when the phone is face down or in a pocket. I also noticed that it switched off the display after a few seconds when on my wireless charging pad last night which was good.

The following is from the Apple website:

To save battery life, the display will go completely dark when:
  • Your iPhone is lying face down
  • Your iPhone is in your pocket or bag
  • Sleep Focus is turned on
  • Low Power Mode is turned on
  • Your iPhone is connected to CarPlay
  • You're using Continuity Camera
  • You haven't used your iPhone for a while (your iPhone can learn your activity patterns and will turn the display off and on accordingly, including if you've set up an alarm or sleep schedule)
  • Your iPhone detects that you've moved away from it with a paired Apple Watch (Always-On display will turn on when your Apple Watch is close to your iPhone again)

I've had a few hours and thought I'd share my initial thoughts from going from a 14 Pro to a 15 Pro Max:
  • Difficult to use 1 handed, so extra caution is needed if you use it without a case like I do.
  • With that said, the screen size for me more than makes up for it. I'm loving it.
  • 2.5 Gbps connection to my home network via a USB-C cable is extremely useful for moving files to and from my NAS, including Synology Photos (yes I have iCloud Photos but I use Synology as a backup).
  • The weight feels similar to the 14 Pro which was my biggest gripe with it, if anything it feels lighter as it's not as top heavy.
  • I personally make fewer mistakes when typing on it; I'm 41 now so perhaps my eyesight and finger accuracy (ooh err) isn't as good now as it used to be. This is also the reason I'm crap at PC games now.
  • The actual feel of the phone is nicer due to the less angular edges. The 14 Pro could feel a little industrial. In fact it's one of the things I preferred about my 11 Pro when I changed to the 14 was the round edges.
So far so good, I haven't had chance to play with the camera properly but I'm sure it'll be fine for me. Also no quality related issues which were posted about earlier in the thread.

I'm on a 12 Pro atm, I was trading it in until I cracked the glass on a camera lense the day before. So getting that replaced and then deciding what to do. 256GB is the size I'd stick with. Reminds me I've not shifted from QNAP to Synology..

Main reason I haven't upgraded for while is I used to do it every year, and then sell off via company. After depreciation and VAT it was essentially a free upgrade. These days with IR35, pointless. Also mobile devices are no longer allowed in the office.

Well, I’ve almost instantly regretted my decision to go without a screen protector.

I’ve had the phone less than a week and I now have a 3mm long scratch right next to where the date is displayed under the notch.

It’s deep enough to catch a fingernail and it’s visible against any dark-ish screen.

As per my previous post, I try and take care of my stuff, I don’t put the phone in a pocket with anything else. I have no idea where this scratch came from, it’s not like I’ve dropped it or anything.

So I go back to what I was saying before — anyone who says modern screens are pretty scratch resistant, or that you don’t need a screen protector, either has a very different tolerance to scratches to me, must absolutely baby their phone, or I’ve been very unlucky.

And my opinion of “ceramic shield”, “Gorilla glass”, etc. hasn’t changed — it’s all marketing BS.

The only iPhone screen I've ever scratched was an 11 Pro, I've updated pretty much every single year. I'm sure you might have found micro scratches if you shine a torch on it or something but I'm not going to do that, there's no noticeable scratches on any of my phones when I've had them and not felt any scratches and I always use dark modes. I don't baby my phone particularly, just store it in a pocket with nothing else.

I'd say you've been unlucky to have scratched it already.

It looks like the screen protector makers still need more time to actually get their products to fit properly this time round as all the stuff rushed to release either provides insufficient coverage and rainbowing at the edges or is edge to edge but the black borders cover up the extremities of the screen. I’ve had a mixed experience going protector-less and not over the years but find with the newer devices that protectors make the case lips less noticable and I’m not a fan of folio cases or sleeves since I just want to pull the phone out of my pocket and look at it, not go through an unboxing process every time I take it out.

I genuinely think you’ve just been unlucky.

I think it’s well known (or at least it was) that the stronger you make a screen then the more prone to scratches it is and vice versa.
There’s no free lunch when it comes to these modern screens.

Few more days with the 15 Pro Max coming from the 12 Pro Max.

Dead impressed with the battery. No issues with it overheating.

I stand by most of my initial thoughts on the camera setup. What I will say is whilst the telephoto and ultra wide lenses are complete garbage, the main camera at 24mm does seem pretty capable. It renders some pleasant natural bokeh with portraits (although portrait mode remains a hideously bad gimmick). Landscapes however still have that flat mobile-phone rendering which I can’t seem to edit away in Lightroom.

You’ve clearly been unluckily. Apple Care plus and you get a nice new screen.
