How so? Google orders the phones from LG and takes care of the distribution, no?

LG make the phone, Google pay LG to make the phone. Google have got to be subsidising LG some where along the line, in countries in the EU where the Play Store is not available retailer pricing which is €xxx above Goolgle Play pricing in other EU € countries has been proved to be dictated by LG.

But Play Store is available in the UK.

Hi Azza
Not sure it works that way.
1. Google Play Store sales. Google takes "ownership" of handset, however briefly to turn it around and books the sale at £ 239 or £ 279 in UK. I believe they are not making a loss, just break-even or a small profit on the handset. Where Google expects to make more money related to the sale is through the app store when the user buys an app (Google takes 30% of the revenue and the app creator takes 70%) or buys content such as a film or book, etc.
2. Contrast (1) with the sale in a country where Google Play Store is not offering the N4. There, the ownership passes from LG to the carrier/operator in that country. LG probably makes a small profit on the sale and the carrier also makes money on the mark-up. My guess in the UK is the CPW or O2 make a decent profit on the device but LG certainly makes something.

Google could, if it wanted, only offer the N4 via the Play Store but currently the bigger issue for Google is "eyeballs". Google knows that the N4 would still be niche if it only sold it via the Play Store and since it wants more eyeballs on Android (to make money on apps and content in the Play Store), it works with the operators. In 2010, when Google offered the N1, Verizon initially offered to distribute it and backed off at the last minute--it realised Google wanted to really cut them out. In the end, T Mob US was the only N1 operator/distributor in the US (they are much smaller). I read recently that only 10% of smartphone sales are "direct" and 90% are through the carriers/operators. Google still needs them even though it would prefer to dis-intermediate them. We geeks buy direct. Most people still do not. Offering the N4 at £ 239 shows the UK population who are "listening" that the mark-ups are unnecessary. Things will change, but slowly. Google is trying to bring about the change but the Android Open Handset Alliance (more than 80 members) includes many operators. Catch-22 really.

Kona786 I installed Team Win Recovery today on the N4, It is certainly a better looker than CWM, Seems pretty easy to use too! :) Thanks for mentioning it in the S2 thread.

I shall see how it goes when I decide to flash some ROMs if I ever do, Quite happy to stick with the stock one for now though until PA.

Is there any idea of the ETA of stock on the play store? I have got 7th December in my head from somewhere but no idea where! My blackberry died and still got 10months on my contract, so thinking get this, live out the rest of my contract and then go SIM only.

Bit the bullet and bought this from CPW today. Only 72 left in stock at their warehouse but should be with me tomorrow anyway.

Felt horrible spending so much money but breaking a phone is never going to be cheap, plus it's only actually £50 more than Google for me because I won't need to buy a £40 crappy phone in the meantime or pay for postage.

Interesting most of what you have said makes sense but just so we all know CPW actually get the phone for around £310-315 (and I presume it's a similar price for O2) from LG so Google have heavily discounted the phone at the play store.

Yeah its nice to use, I've only ever used the old non touch CWM recovery and this TWRP is more user friendly and really fast at making Nandroids. I Like it!

Is your battery life any better on the N4 now after spending more time with it?

Im getting more and more tempted to just get this from CPW, there's just no news coming from Google at all as to when this will ever be available to order again, or if there website will still be broken for the second rush :(
