***The Official LG Nexus 4 Thread***

Well my Nexus 4 arrived today and I'm not sure I like it

I've ready loads of blogs about how Android 4 has come on leaps and bounds and leaves the ancient iOS for dust. Well im not so sure.

Project Butter supposed to make everything fluid? Well mine has a slight lag when scrolling left to right

No notifications from facebook? That can't be right surely? One of the selling points of Android is the OS features
No icon notifications on whatsapp? must be a setting im missing somewhere?

Whilst scrolling down the news feed it stops every so often to load? The iPhone just keeps on scrolling

Plex apps keeps crashing and not as feature rich as the iOS version?

Does the sky news app alert you when something is 'breaking news' I don't mean a 2 second text notification at the top, I mean does a window appear on the home screen?

How do I make a video call? If I leave my phone for an hour and get 10 txt messages how do I know I have 10 unread messages

Sorry for all the questions, just need to make sure I've done the right thing

Now do I battle on or send it back to google under DSR and keep the iPhone

Help!

Keep your iphone if you don't want to spend 20 minutes learning how another OS works. Especially if you call it "battling on", I doubt you'll be satisfied.

Your basic criticism seems to be that it doesn't have a counter on the icons of various apps. What's wrong with the notification bar which you can see without having to unlock your phone?

If you did really want that though, you have to read up on what a launcher is. If you want pop up notifications then sky will have to design it into their app. I doubt they would as that would be really annoying. Notification bar is better than a single popup which can only show one thing at a time. There's a reason why Apple have started using one.

Agreed, I have 2 iphones 4's in the family, 1 ipad and 1 nexus 4. Wouldn't swap my n4 for either of the iphones. As smooth as the iphones here but maybe the n4 isn't for you

Just wanting to learn as quickly as I can

Yes, I know I can drag the notification bar down, but that's the same as dragging the lock screen button up to unlock. Surely a quick glance at icons numbers is quicker than a shopping list of notifications. Sorry, I'm sure I'm missing something obvious. Like I said, I'm trying to learn quickly :D

I'm sure I read about the benefit of android was a more alive homescreen, dragging a notification bar down seems nothing like being alive

Thanks,

would you say this was the best camera app for the N4?

It seems good to me, though i posted in essential apps and others weren't so sure. I did post some outdoor comparisons could do with some indoor ones but i am a hopeless photographer :-)

The thing is I only have 7 days in order to send it back. How about helping a fellow OCUKer?

No offense to you but did you even do any research before buying the phone?

Notification counts on icons such as whatsapp can be done by using a launcher from the play store such as Apex Launcher or Nova Launcher. Both of which offer a lot more customisation than the default launcher.

There is a notification light at the bottom of the phone in the middle which flashes depending on what you receive email/text/etc. This can be customised more with an app called "lightflow"

All messages/notifications etc will show in the notification bar at the top.

Whilst scrolling down the news feed it stops every so often to load? The iPhone just keeps on scrolling

Why is this such a problem? Its loading.

No idea about Plex never heard of it & I don't use the Sky News app.

Use the lockscreen widgets to get more. You can even get a widget called "dashclock" that can sit on the lockscreen & homescreen which can give you details such as: Weather, Emails, Messages, Alarms, Battery. Plus a lot more.

My Nexus 4 is very smooth.

The thing is with Android it offers the bare features that are needed but it allows you to add so much more on top if you wish to do so. Customisation is the key with Android.

What do I gain knowing i have 1 o/s email or 100? I'm sure there is an add in which does what you want - google will definitely be your friend.

It's up to all the app designers to do it if they want. I'm sure you've already seen the lock screen widgets you can get.

I think I'm starting to understand that I need many third party apps to really make it shine rather than sticking with the vanilla out of the box experience.

Don't think I bought one blind, I did read up for hours on the various android phones and really liked the sound of it. Suppose it's a big shock actually using one over reading about someone elses experiences.

Shame about the news app though. Quite liked having my phone wake up and alert me to something important, rather than me having to power on, unlock, go into app and check news stories.

For me it's what you're used to, givme an Iphone now I'm all at sea, hand an Iphone user this they can't work it out. I like it but equally you may just like the iphone experience

There will be an app that can do the last sentence.

Read through my post & try some of the apps/launchers i mentioned.

No lag at all on mine. Try a factory reset maybe? Presumably your phone has updated to the latest version of Android?

Both of those are app settings.

Like you said, it's loading. That said, the Facebook app still isn't that great.

Never used it, try deleting it and installing it again. Not really an Android issue though.

Does the sky news app alert you when something is 'breaking news' I don't mean a 2 second text notification at the top, I mean does a window appear on the home screen?

No, one of the main benefits of Android is that nothing should interrupt what's on your screen at the time. The notification area is where everything goes. A window across everything else on your homescreen is the worst thing an app could do. It may have a widget available which might do what you want.

How do I make a video call? If I leave my phone for an hour and get 10 txt messages how do I know I have 10 unread messages

It'll say in the notification area, although you can probably get an alternative messaging app that will provide reminders.

Your call.

Help!

It is, based solely on the fact that your homescreen isn't just a grid of static icons. If you're averse to using the notifications for whatever reason, it sounds like widgets might accomplish some of what you want. Personally I don't tend to bother with them much, but if you want content on your homescreen that's the way to go.

Why do you want to use a crappy news app anyway when you can get apps like pulse.

edit:

Flipboard is a popular iOS app also on Android.
