***The Official LG Nexus 4 Thread***

Was on stock kernel for 4.3, but as with 4.2.2, found its performance to be a pain. Definitely recommend the unofficial franco.Kernel release, noticeably smoother!

Hello Nexus 4 owners,

Quick question: would it be silly to buy a Nexus 4 now?

I have a Galaxy Nexus and it's doing my head in a bit e.g. occasional lag, not responding, requiring reboots. So, I wanted something to keep me going until the Nexus 5 is released and reviewed. Does anyone have any idea when the Nexus 5 may be released? I imagined it may be as late as early December before having it in my hands. I could sell the GN to a mate probably.

personally i would wait it out tbh, even if you don't manage to get a nexus 5 at launch the nexus 4 price is going to drop a lot as soon as the nexus 5 hits, therefore second hand bargains could arise.

how is the nexus spec compared to say a Y300 for £70? as a phone to tide you over until the nexus 5?

or maybe even custom ROM your nexus?

Yeh you're probably right. I may just factory reset my GN to see if I can sqeeze a bit more life out of it. TBH it's not bad, I am just getting the upgrade itch. The Moto X was supposed to satisfy that, but it's not being released in the UK.

Your GNex should be running fine, could be the TRIM issue or some other weird thing. Best bet, factory reset then update to 4.3.

Agreed. Loving this phone and for the first time don't feel like I'd be tempted to upgrade in a year or two (despite not being on contract anyway).

One from the weekend :).

Not sure if this has been discussed at all, but what's Googles plan with this phone with regards to OS upgrades in the near future? I would expect 4.3 is already out on it, or shortly making its way to it. Have Google mentioned anything with regards to the next major version?

The Mrs is hankering for a smartphone and this looks like it is the best value for money at the moment.

It has got 4.3 and I am 100% sure that it will get the next update, KLP in November/December.

Previous nexus phones:

nexus one shipped with 2.1 - got 2.2 and 2.3
Nexus s shipped with 2.3 - got 4.0 and 4.1
Galaxy nexus came shipped with 4.0 - has got 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3 so far

Updated to the latest PA release (based on the JWR kernel, but with bits merged from JSS), and it appears to be far smoother than the JSS release on the stock kernel. JWR kernels like Franco should be used with it (not JSS). Root does not work if you want franco r174, so you'll need SuperSU.

Might as well provide links:
ParanoidAndroid
franco.Kernel
Latest SuperSU (v1.51)

EDIT: Link to a fixed franco r174 zip, meaning that root will work. SuperSU will not be required: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44514384&postcount=38287

Just a heads up, I said a few weeks ago that my phone had used a large amount of data in one night on 'google services' and assumed it was just the update with the phone location stuff that came out recently. I thought it had finished so I chanced turning my data back on and it shot up immediately once again with no real explanation. I've just looked into it more and it turns out I've used more than 5Gb on wifi and nearly 1Gb on data, just on google services this month!

The issue apparently comes from the fact that I'm on a custom rom (a 4.2 version of PA) and its the phone trying and failing to download the 4.3 stock update over and over again. I'm just about to update to a newer version of PA to try and fix it but having heard there are issues with 4.3 I was trying to hold off until they were resolved. looks like now I have no choice.

So a warning to anyone else who has a slightly older custom rom, keep an eye on your usage and if it is maybe try a 4.3 based version
