***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

I don't shave for a hobby and there's no way I'd go back to a mach 3 or fusion after swapping to a merkur safety razor. It's just as easy and fast once you've practiced a bit and I definitely get a better shave. And blades are cheap as chips. Spend 25 quid or so on a decent razor, learn to wet shave then your all set.

It's very true loads of people make it a hobby and end up spending triple on soaps, brushes etc. than what they might save on blades. It's entirely possible to get away from Gillette without doing that though.

^^ This.

I have saved a ton of money over the years thanks to my Merkur. I bought a bulk load of blades about 10 years ago, and they still haven't run out yet. Cost me a lot less than the number of disposables I would have used in that time.

Really? Each of the disposable heads lasts me a month. How long does each blade last you?
How many shaves in a month?

I would say each razor blade lasts me about 3 shaves, each mach3/fusion blade perhaps 6 or 7.

Former is 8p each, latter 2-3 quid each, so that's 2.6p per shave vs 28.5p per shave using the numbers most generous to gillette.

Remember folks, not all beards grow the same :) My beard is very thick / dense, which dulls the blades very quickly when wet shaving (and one of the reasons I've taken to growing a beard instead :D )

Huh? The Fusion blades last me a month, shaving every day. Call it 30 days. The Fusion blades are £1.70 each in packs of 10. So roughly 6p per day.
I suppose if you shave each day it takes less of a toll on the blades. Still I think that's good going getting 30 days from a fusion head. Do you have quite soft stubble? My numbers were based on shaving after maybe 4 or 5 days of growth and I have pretty coarse hair. If I shaved each day I'd probably get more shaves per head so comparison doesn't really work then.

1.70 per blade is a very good price, mind if I ask where you found that?

Just revisited a blade that I haven't tried for a few years- "Perma-Sharp Super" - from an old sample pack. It was surprisingly good and really comfortable.

I must have tried them when I first got the pack but I don't think I gave them much of a chance. Being new to DE at the time, I was drawn towards the more popular brands.

I'll have to go through the old sample pack again I think.

Any one have any tips to grow my beard?

I've tried rocking a 5mm cut which was OK, but then started doing 3mm. (I know these a super short lengths)

I'm not sure if I am one to actually grow a beard or not. During the lock down I let it grow for about 5 weeks and it was more patchy than a full beard. Also my hair seems to grow in a pattern (swirl on my right cheek) and tends to lie flat on the face.

I wanted to cut it down to 6mm yesterday so left it to grow for 2 weeks after a 3mm cut. First of all even after this time it still wasn't at 6mm and the 6mm guard on the clippers wasn't taking off much hear.

The second issue was above 5mm my hair seems very unruly. I.e each strand seems to go in a different directing to the rest same on my chin.

I wanted to experiment yesterday with fading it in a little, but bodged it up and ended up cutting it down to 3mm again which made me feel sad. So now I need to wait at least 2 weeks to try again.

My plan this time to get a bit more control over it and not have strands all over the place is to cut it next week to 5mm and then the week after try 6mm. I am hoping the hair would be more even across the area and not so disparate.

Also the clippers I bought which is the Phillips 9000 I now regret. 1) it only goes up to 7mm and 2) the angle of the guard doesn't allow you to see where you are cutting if you want to do anything fancy like a fade etc... So as I actually want to do this things I am tempted to buy another set of clippers.

Any tips, for a first time beards man. How do I grow it, make it uniform etc... I know just letting it grow is the answer but there must be something I can do to it in the mean time.

Any set of clippers people recommend for longer beards and for doing stuff such as fading if I wanted?

Don't laugh but I had a go at this yesterday and needed up bodging it up. The hair on my jaw line was half 6mm and half 3mm :o

Then I thought for next time I will try something like this. Which to me looks like essentially a 4.5mm all over (with fade) but leaving the moustache and chin to grow. But as I said above I have uneven hair strands in this region and now where near as thick covarge. You can see more skin if you know what I mean.

Not sure fades are for me to be fair as I neither have the skills or the right beard hair to pull it off.

OK... I think I know the answer know to the out of whack bristles on my chin etc... use a pair of scissors.

Definitely just let it grow for a bit. Especially at 3mm or 6mm it's so easy to go back a step if you trim too aggressively. Try to just do the odd tidy up of unruly hairs. They will settle eventually, my beard has patches of dead straight, really curly, lying flat or sticking up. I was trimming them around the edges between maybe 2-4 months growth then it all melded into one (shaggy) mass. Give it time to fill out.

OK cool. So I need to let it grow for a couple of months.

Does anyone here actually just hate shaving? I shave in the morning and 2 hours later the stubble is noticeable.

I can't wet shave due to it being too close making the hairs grow inwards, it even happens if I use an electric shaver sometimes.

The hair is so corse that it takes like 20 to 30 minutes to shave with an electric shaver.

Its just such a chore. Anyone have any ideas on how I can avoid these ingrowing hairs? They swell the area up and I have to squeeze or tweezer them out. When I get the hair out, it looks like one hair but if I rub it, it turns into 3-4-8 hairs.

I used to see it that way, but if there's one thing the pandemic has given myself it's a new hobby when it comes to caring for myself as you can see from the above. Never thought I would...

I have an antique Valet Auto Strop, and I'd like to know where I can buy blades to fit it. Any suggestions?
