***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

Anyone know what the Gillette 7 o'clocks yellow/ orange blades are like?

Not tried the oranges but the yellows are sharp. Very, very sharp nigh on feather sharp I'd say. I bought 100 of them for £10.99 from Shaving Shack a while back (offer is still on) and I'd say I can get about 2 really good shaves from each blade.

I'd highly recommend them - I've tried Derbys, Feathers, Lords, Treets and a few others but these are the ones I use the most and would recommend.

These yellows...are they like the bic razors ie very cheap and cheerful? If so, upgrade to something better because those razors are not good if you've just started shaving

No, nothing of the sort, the yellows might be cheap (£12 for 100) but they're very good. Most blades are cheap though - the only ones that aren't massively cheap are the Feathers and I'd say that the 7 O'clock Yellows are very close to them.

Ah I see, apologies. I was thinking that they were the ones that are £1 for 5 plastic razors!!

My best tip would be to make sure that you've heated up your skin nicely, which will make it substantially easier to shave!

I normally either shave in the bath, or shave post bath or post shower. Does wonders.

Ah I get you - thinking about the names now I can see the confusion :)

The hot towel technique does work as well - though normally I get very hot water and use that - a lot of people also forget about the cold water after the shave to close the pores which is also pretty important.

Any tips?
Sounds like one or both of the following two things.

1) Pressure. Don't use ANY at all! Let the weight of the razor do all the work. Find the centre balance point of the razor and hold it at that place as you shave.

2) Overshaving. If there's no lather on your face, the blade shouldn't touch it. So if you feel you need to go over a certain patch again, pick up your brush and apply some more lather.

If you're used to using a Mach3 or similar cartridge razor, you'll probably find that you normally do both the above, both apply lots of pressure and overshave the same spot multiple times. Don't do either and you'll be absolutely fine.

This might not be the place as I suppose it's a lack of shaving but i'm now five weeks in to growing a full beard :)

I really like it. Just trying to resist the urge to "tidy it up".

Cheers mate. Previously I was a Mach 3 shaver but for the last 18 months I've been using a Panasonic 4 foil electric shaver. I think the initial irritation was due to a bumpy face due to the electric shaver. Been using the 7 o clock yellows but might try a different one today as I bought a sample pack.

What do people recommend to soothe and moisturise your face afterwards?

This is what I use straight after shaving. It has witch hazel and it does a very good job. You only need a tiny amount and so a tube lasts for months and months. It has a light scent but it doesn't really linger and it's pretty neutral so it's a good base for any aftershave you want to wear.

After Shave Care
Gone are the days of throwing alcohol on your face in an absurd kind of sadistic man test. This can just agitate your freshly shaved skin and cause rashes. Instead use a quality post shave balm, to soothe your skin and "seal" it.

A splash of Witch Hazel (Sainsburys currently), once that's dried, a splash of Aftershave (Floid, Skin Bracer, Aqua Velva, Proraso, Spieck) works best for me.

I only used a balm (Floid), if i've had a rough shave which is very rare now i've finished testing blades.

I always use an alum bloc straight after the cold rinse, leave that on whilst cleaning my brush, razor and wiping the sink round and then after washing that off with cold water I'm currently using Dove balm that I got from Boots.

I want to try some Proraso Balm but haven't got round to buying any yet.

Thanks guys. Will probably give the bond street gel a go. Had a much better shave yesterday using a perma-sharp super. Though I think it was down to me taking time and improving slightly as opposed to the blade....I'm not sure.

I've got an alum stick but may invest in a block now to rub across my face en-masse!

looking to place an order soon for a razor and was wondering for a beginner is there much difference between the Edwin de89 and the merkur 34c? which would be the best one to go for

thanks

I went with the Muhle R89 recently as a beginner following some advice from the guy who runs The Executive Shaving company. Worth a look?

On another note - just tried some Shark Stainless blades and really didn't like them. Got Astra's and Derby's left to go now from my starter pack.
