***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

I haven't tried Astra's but have tried both Shark and Derby's in my R89 and found the Sharks much better, found the Derby's actually quite good in my 38C Barberpole but they did seem to blunt a lot quicker than the other (for the price though they are fine).

I don't know about anybody else but I always find the 2nd shave with a blade is the best one I get esp. the Feathers.

Agree with the 2nd shave of a blade is best

I might revisit the Gillette's as they were my first shave so I think now that I am getting more into it they are worth another go...

I know everyone is different so they may not be great for you but I can't speak highly enough of the Gillette 7 O'clock Yellows with my Muhle R89, I liked them so much that after my 1st 5 I ordered 100 so I didn't run out (they were £10.99 from Shaving Shack with free delivery)

They're really interesting, didn't realise so much time went into making blades, seems strange that you can get Derby blades for around 2p each when that much goes into the process.

Well I had a much better shave with some 7oclock yellows yesterday.

Still getting a sore red rash on my neck area but I'm hoping that it is just my face adjusting to close shaves again.

I'm using the ToBS St Jermyn cream for sensitive faces. May try MWF to see if the cream is exacerbating the rash?

Also tried some No7 post shave balm from boots which is surprisingly good.

Thanks for the guide Captain Planet, a couple of weeks ago I got a Merkur 34C with one of the blade multi starter packs, a Simpson's badger brush (from which I can report no bad smells at all) and some soap in a wooden bowl from Taylor of Bond Street. A fairly affordable mix at £88, I doubt I'll need more blades inside a year, probably more soap though, or something else as I find this stuff a little lacking in lubrication.

It's definitely a closer shave, but I do need to be patient, the first time I tried there was blood. Though I did notice DE razor cuts are far smaller than cartridge razor cuts, they seal up and stop bleeding in no time at all. I'm managing to not cut myself now, except last night, I think it's an indicator that the blade is getting dull?

It does take practice and also you do need to take your time, I cannot emphasise the need to pay attention enough, I get the very small nick here and there that stop bleeding with a quick wipe of the alum bloc but the one time I got complacent I took my eye off the ball I removed a very large amount off a mole and took about 30 mins of styptic pencil and cold water to stop bleeding.

Also today I ordered the Blubeards Revenge shavette that should be here tomorrow, gonna have to be extra careful with that little beastie ;-)

I am thinking of tanking the plunge since 4 Guillette razors cost nearly €20 and l find that the shave they offer isn't as good as l would like.

I was wondering though how careful you need to be with DE blades. Will the slightest mistake result into a Tarantino movie?

Well you can't be silly, but you won't be slicing your face off. They are called safety razors, after all. :)

Well, I can see this getting expensive. Just ordered some Wilkinson sword blades. Also trying to find the MWF in the hardwood bowl in stock somewhere. Also going to get some T&H limes cream.

Great cheers mate. Do Connaught do a 10% discount like the others? Any codes about?

And OMG just had the best shave ever! Spur of the moment tried an Astra blade. No angry red irritation, nice shave and extremely satisfying. I'm extremely made up right now lol

Had a revelation with my DE89, realised for the first time I had my angle all wrong. Shave is so much smoother and doesn't seem to pull when the hair is getting a little longer. Surprised I never got any rash or anything as the difference is night and day.

Hmm I'd say the cost savings are probably more than the OP states. Most people don't change their blades after 2 shaves - 4 or 5 is more standard is it not? That's what I normally go for, though I have ditched blades after 2 if they're not great. That easily halves the blade cost.

Plus, if you get a large tub of the Proraso pre/post for £18 or whatever it is, it will easily last a year even if used every day cause you need so little of it. My last tub lasted nearly 15 months of daily use!

So I'd say the DE cost can be lower than the OP states even without going for products that are more budget.

Plus, once you've got the technique and whatnot, it doesn't really take any longer to DE shave than Mach 3 shave. Same time, waaay less cost, waaaaaay more customisation to suit your own individual preferences and beard growth. Win!

(My setup just now: Merkur 38B, Kent BK4, Proraso cream, Proraso pre/post, Derby blades - but only cause the Personna Red were out of stock everywhere last time I bought)

So far soo good with the MWF, quite like it. Expected it to be more wooly smelling.....

Can anyone recommend a metal polished shaving bowl around £10?

Also thinking of getting the T&H WI Limes cream, where's the best place for this?
