***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

Another electric shaver question folks, and this one is driving me utterly nuts.

I have a Philips HS8420 Nivea Coolskin I have had for a good few years. Last time I replaced the heads on it I sourced the replacement from Boots but that was a couple of years ago. I normally wet shave and just use the Philips occasionally but the time has come for me to replace the heads once again. I've had a look online and because this is a fairly old shaver, the heads appear to be like rocking horse poo. And the price? Gobsmacking. Replacement HS85 heads range between £75-£150. Can anyone suggest where to look for them at a slightly less bonkers price? Or is it possible to just replace the foils and blades with something compatible or from a similar model?

I'm loathe to pay around £100 for replacement heads for a 5 year old shaver. I could probably get a brand new one of some sort which would be just as good as this one, but I kinda like the old HS8420! Any advice appreciated. My Google-Fu is pretty good but perhaps someone knows of a sneaky stockist who may still have a few of these lying around? Wishful thinking maybe!?!

I had the exact same shaver. I went to replace the heads a few months ago and was shocked at the price. The options were to buy the heads for £80. Buy a new electric shaver for £100. Or have a change and try DE shaving.

I opted for the latter :)

There's a cost comparison on Page 1 of this thread which you could use as a rough guide.

Yes, use it as a rough guide. I shave probably 3 times a week on average. I use about 1 blade a week. I've used not even half a tub of shave soap and not half a bottle of balm. That's in three months of shaving. So the cost is much less than the headline prices in the guide.

Bought some Bulgari Man in black after shave balm in duty free a few weeks ago, absolutely love the stuff, great smell & leaves my face feeling rather gooood.

Re: Cost of DE Shaving

Been doing this for a year now shaving twice a week. Total spend is not even £100 and I haven't touched the feathers from my original order yet. Ordered more oil and cream last month but didn't need too.
Glad I made the change from my old Mach 3.

I purposely estimated the cost of DE on a like for like with mach3 and shaving every single day. So if people do begin DE they might be pleasantly surprised that they spend much, much less than they may have expected.

I shave every day, and I buy lots of nice creams as I like a selection, so my spend in similar to that in OP. You can do DE shaving on a very small budget though. Mach3 on the other hand is never cheap. It is the best a man can get though, right? ;)

Draeger, sounds like a Christmas present from the missus right there! :p

After a bit of research I've put together a wishlist for the missus to pick from, quite looking forward to this, just the price of blades for the fusion is enough for me to want to try something new. I've been known to use horrendously blunt blades just to avoid the cost of buying another four pack for £16 or whatever ridiculous price they are.

I bought 100 Med Prep blades in the early months of 2013 and I counted at the weekend - I've got 33 of them left.

Then shortly after I got the original 100, I bought another 200. I think I've got enough to last a fair while :)

This information is of no use to me in light of the question I posted above! :p

I have the 660S. Very happy for its cheap price.

I'll look at that one, I think I could be cheeky and get one up to £40 though.

Mrs got me a short handled Merkur for my birthday. Just had my first shave with it. Probably not the best canvas to use as I hadn't shaved for a good 3-4 weeks and my beard was getting a bit thick so took a lot to hack it out.

I'll give it a week and then try again on some stubble and maybe with a different blade as i've only used the one that came with the handle! Impressed so far though!

Anyone used the Bluebeards Revenge soap? Does it crack like mad for anyone else, or have I got one from a bad batch? Seems pretty decent, but it looks like it will start falling apart.
Does Miitchells do the same, as I read it was the same, rebranded and possibly slightly different smell.

I've used Mitchells and it only starts breaking up when you get to the end of the pot.
