Help me to find the correct shaving kit!

Hi everyone,

a few questions about shaving really. Iv'e been shaving for a good 18 years, generally I have always been a gillette razor kind of guy but I have always suffered with spots / red blotches after shaving. A couple of years ago I moved onto an electric shaver (Phillips AT890)

But this also leaves my face somewhat sore, blotchy and causes spots. I have tried so many different creams, balms, gels etc for before shaving and after shaving.

I am pondering moving to a Cut throat razor or a scimitar...

What are peoples thoughts? :)

I've never found Gillette to give me a comfortable shave but Wilkinsons Sword hydro 5 works fine for me with no irritation and only very rarely any blotchiness or spots. You might also want to check your technique, hair growth direction, etc. as you could be doing it wrong for your face if your actually going against the grain where you think your going with it, etc.

EDIT: Ironically I use Gillette Fusion ProGlide cooling shaving gel as I find it works better than the Wilkinsons stuff as shaving gels go.

Ha, I thought there was a thread, I even searched for it :(

Cheers guys, I will look at technique, I am pretty much a constant stubble man now as I just use a beard trimmer to avoid my face being a mess!

Read through the start and end of this thread!

So thoughts on this...

The Bluebeards set should be fine, I have the post shave balm and its very good.

Once you have started to get your technique you can look to add bits, it does become a bit of an obsession.

Merkur 37C slant bar has arrived:

Looking forward to taking it for a spin tomorrow morning!

I decided to stick with the shorter handle, as that's what I'm used to with the 34C. I've been looking for a slightly more aggressive shave, so it should be interesting to see how much closer it gets and how much more aggressive it really is.

I got two cans of goo for Christmas but interestingly, it's Proraso canned goo.

I used the yellow one this evening, I don't speak Italian so I don't know what scent it is supposed to be but it smelt nice. I haven't used canned goo for years so I wasn't sure what to do, whether to put it on my brush and apply that way or straight onto my face. In the end I squirted some onto my hands and applied that to my face. I didn't use enough for the first pass, I used far too much for the second and just a bit too much for the final pass!

The end result was a good, clean and comfortable shave. I was pleasantly surprised.

I can't find the Merkur 34C anywhere in stock online, can anyone offer an alternative? Either slightly better or the same, I don't want a lesser razor!

The 33C

The chrome plated 33C is a three piece, lighter weight version of the legendary Merkur 34C Heavy Duty. It utilises the same head but with a slighty narrower and consequently less weighty handle. As always, the same fantastic Merkur build quality has been applied making it an excellent alternative to the Merkur 34C.

Cheers, a bit lighter? Shouldn't make too much difference I guess!

This site has the 34C in stock. I have used this site myself so I can recommend it as a good one to use.

Just to add more info for you. There are the 33c, 34c and 38c. The 34 appears to be the most popular choice. It is short handled, heavy weighted and comes in two parts; the main body and detachable top plate / head.

The 38c is essentially a longer handle version of the 34c and also comes in two parts.

The 33c is a lighter version of the 34c and comes in three parts; the handle, the Base plate/head and top plate/head.

All three are great razors, you just need to discover what suits you personally.

Alternatively the Edwin jagger DE89 is also an excellent starter razor. It is of better build quality than the merkur and is also cheaper. However, the shave is less aggressive.

How are these still selling out all the time? I got mine two years ago and back then they were sold out in most places.
Still on Amazon but £10 more than most places.

Yeah the extra £10 is putting me off :)

That site with postage makes it about £38 which is still more expensive than the £30 the 34C usually is1

I do have a sensitive face when it comes to shaving so maybe a slightly less aggressive shave with the Jagger would suit? I also don't mind getting the 33C if it is better than the Jagger. But I also don't mind the 38C if it isn't too much longer!

I guess I am open to your expert advice :D
