***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

Wow, It's fancy in here. And I know a thing or two about fancy.

Yeah the extra £10 is putting me off :)

That site with postage makes it about £38 which is still more expensive than the £30 the 34C usually is1

I do have a sensitive face when it comes to shaving so maybe a slightly less aggressive shave with the Jagger would suit? I also don't mind getting the 33C if it is better than the Jagger. But I also don't mind the 38C if it isn't too much longer!

I guess I am open to your expert advice :D

When you say sensitive, exactly what though? Razor burn? Product? Dry skin? If done properly, a DE shave will combat most issues regardless of which razor you choose. So long as you nail down the technique you will improve skin condition. The 34c isn't particularly aggressive, it's just more so than the EJ. I read that a lot of people who start with the EJ soon find themselves looking at something more aggressive. Personally I'd say pay the extra for the 34, learn how to use it properly and create a nice smooth shave and see how your skin fairs after a while with that. You cant go very wrong with either of these suggestions though.

No expert, just experienced :) there's many posters in here who can vouch for many other razors I've never seen before. Chances are you'll buy one and look to buy a couple more in time. As is the case for most :D

Used a 34c hd for a few years now, despite having a futur and two straights I always use the 34c as it just does the job. The futur even on lowest setting was a bit much for me and straight shaving although it does give a great result is too much of a faff for me.

Got some Wickham cola super smooth from the kids at Christmas, fantastic stuff, my new fave.......I've had a few.

Good Morning chaps. I posted a daft newbie question a few pages back so thought I'd come in and update on my shaving escapades.

Managed to convince my girlfriend (after much smirking and the suggestion that I may be turning into my grandad) to pick me up an Edwin Jagger 89L for Christmas. I'm currently also using TOB cream and some form of badger brush (can't remember the grade).

Had two shaves so far, I think using the Gillette Silver Blues from the thread endorsed starter pack, and I'm pretty happy with the shave. No nicks so far, a little irritation but I think that's technique (I've supplemented my stash with a shave oil and bottle of Nivea Sensitive post shave balm which I remember being good from my younger, more sensitive days).

I have to say I'm really enjoying the ritual, it may just be the fact that it's something new but I used to loathe shaving and now I actually look forward to it. I've got some time tonight so will be having another crack. I've got a couple of questions if I may:

1. As I mentioned I've tried the Gillette Silver Blues, any recommendation on blades for tonights shave? I was thinking Derbys but the opinions in the thread seem mixed.

2. How long should a tub of the TOBS cream be lasting me? I just want to clarify whether I'm using too much, I fear I may be.

3. Any recommendations for a pre shave face soap? I've heard glycerin based soap is the way to go but I thought I'd test more experienced heads.

I have to say great thanks to you guys, your enthusiasm is what swayed me into buying a DE razor and it's so far greatly improved my dull as hell grooming regime.

Personally I think derby blades are awful but each to their own, I find a good all round blade to be the astra platinum, often just called the green on forums. If u don't have any I could send some if u trust me your addy.
A blob the size of a wallnut is all you have to use, I go for a tip of my pinkie size bit I often use too much too.......I guess I have big pinkies lol. A tub should last ages, I really don't know as I never seem to use just one at a time.
I'm a few years into de shaving now and there is no way on earth I could go back to cartridge shaving, if it works for you, great, but after 25 years or so of it I have found what suits me.
I still like to try new blades and creams etc so the fun hasn't gone, I hope you get as much out of it as I have.

Edit
Try shaving after a bath or shower, if I have a decent beard then I often put on some conditioner, laugh but it works for me.

I think I've actually got some Astras in the starter pack, I'll give them a pop tonight. Thanks for the tip.

It is just like everything DE shaving wise you need to try and see. I never liked the Astras but many do. I find derby are okay, but I like yellow Gillette best. I've never got on with Feathers, while they might be the sharpest and best for some they give me a rouge shave.

As you can see what works for me doesn't really match what you read on forums, it is suck it and see imo

I like Astra's. I find Feathers are sometimes too sharp and can nick you easily. Astra's are sharp but don't rip my face to pieces. I flick between the two but right now I favour the Astra's.

I've been using a Merkur Futur with Japanese Feather blades accompanied by Geo Trumper lime shaving soap and a badger brush for a few years now.

Easily as close as a Gillette/Wilkinson blahblah and the kit's paid for itself. Used to cut myself a little when I first started but now I never do.

Just ordered a tube of proraso blue shaving cream. Can't wait to try it. I haven't tried proraso since having a tube of the old green stuff a long time ago. :D

Made a complaint, it's getting changed!

So, I had my first DE shave a couple of days ago, still trying to nail the technique. Today I have a bit of uncomfortableness where hairs are growing back under my chin and I have noticed I have a couple of white head spots coming through.

Any idea's what could cause this?

Are you shaving in the right direction? I hate my neck as my hair grows in a North/Eastern direction and turns into an Eastern direction. Once I started shaving following the growth I lost all irritation.
Are you going against the grain?
