***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

Thank you matey. I will let you know when it arrives and I have tried it. I certainly won't miss that new badger brush scent :D
That was the only shipping they offered at checkout $14.99 which was more than the brush :D I'm not fussed anyway. Good overall price if it turns out to be a good product.

No problem, fella. Yea, I went as far as the checkout and saw it's the only option now. They must've got rid of the cheaper "snail mail" international shipping option, possibly because it wasn't very reliable.

Hah, you're right about the smell. A lot more pleasant out of the box than a badger or boar, and non-porous bristles means there's no need to soak it before you shave either, and it dries much, much quicker afterwards (great for travelling).

Just had a very relaxing evening shave. I even broke the scuttle out.

@Simps The same 24mm Plissoft knot as your brush. Lather meditation. :)

Had first DE shave yesterday, and my second today (coming from an electric foil shaver) and found a couple of things:
1. I didn't bleed anywhere near as much as I thought I would - I was rather cautious the first time I used it, and was expecting to cut myself, but there was nothing more than if I use my foil shaver on the first shave, and more, but similar on my second shave. - I always get a bit of bleeding around the jawline, but I'm guessing that should improve with DE shaving, when I improve on the technique.
2. The handle on the shaver feels like it would be better a little longer, this might just take some getting used to, however.

I'm definitely sticking with it for the time being, hopefully my technique will improve, but even now, the shave feels better than it was with my electric, and I can very rarely manage 2 days in a row with the electric shaver due to irritation, but there was very little issue with the DE.

I bought the sample pack of blades, and initially I've used the Derby Extra blades (and I plan to try the others as I change blades), and I've done both first shaves with the same blade. I know they're best being replaced fairly regularly, but is this normally every 1-2 shaves, or are we talking 4-5 normally?

I normally manage 2-3 shaves per blade, but only shave every 2 or 3 days, so the stubble is likely a lot coarser and blunts the blade quicker.
If you're shaving every day I would imagine you can probably do at least 3-4 shaves.

Exactly the same for me. I have some suspicion that blades also lose their edge once exposed to moisture etc, so once you've shaved once they'll be blunter a week later.

I'll have to see how I get on then. I never did shave every day with my electric shaver (as it caused irritation, I would usually only shave when going out etc, and just trim the rest of the time for work etc), but I'd quite like to get into the habit of shaving daily/every other day, as I do prefer being clean shaven if I can manage it.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. Even though the blades are stainless steel, depending on what grade they are, they'll most likely still oxidise slightly, which would cause a duller edge.

The handle is short, hold it in a kind of balanced position between your index finger and thumb, nothing else. Then allow the weight of the razor to do the work against your face. This will mean no cuts and less irritation. Proceed to do three passes WTG, XTG, ATG.

I, like many, recommend feather blades. Replace them every other shave. They're so cheap (compared to cartridge razors), you might as well aim for the best shave every time and do that.

The handle length I found made it hard to hold comfortably, and I ended up with cramp in my hand by the end, but I'm hoping this improves with time.

There are some feathers in the sample pack I bought, and I read they were meant to be some of the sharpest. I intend to try them, but I was planning on trying them after a while of getting used to the technique, so I don't rip my face to pieces too much!

Feathers are sharp but buttery smooth. I snap 1 blade in half for my Wahl 5* Shavette and with 1 pass WTG gets you very close to BBS with no irritation.

In a DE, the Feathers are a joy no pressure needed just a good 30 degree angle and the weight of the razor just glides over and does the rest.

If you don't get along with the handle, you could buy another to try - as I understand it, all Edwin Jagger heads and handles are interchangeable.

And yes Feathers are damn sharp - so sharp the cuts don't even hurt! :O

I bought one of the new metal Wilkinson Sword DE razors, and that certainly got a longer handle tham my 34c, probably by about an inch. They are/were £12 in Tesco recently too, which is a bargain.

Like a full wet shave last May? Good going

Thanks, first time ive grown a full beard properley, always thought i'd have to do it at some point in my life.. Aiming for 2 years of length before changing... Honestly ive never had so many compliments or been able to have a unique image than i have now.

If it's giving you cramp then I suggest you're gripping it too tight (wahey). Like I said, release the whole handle from your hands and JUST hold it between the tips of your index finger and your thumb. Hold it out in front of you and balance it there. This is how you should hold it to your face, without pincer pressure, just let it fall against your face.
