The Official Microsoft Flight Thread

I seem to be the only one but I am really enjoying Flight and I'm looking forward to what they've got in store for the future.

I love simulation and much as the next guy but I honestly haven't had this much fun with a flight "sim" for a while.

Your not the only one Riddell, have you bought the DLC for the other islands?
The quality is better then the free download & the RV training mission is lots of fun.

Here is a quote from what someone said to me when I said I was enjoying Flight on the beta.

No, your not wrong. Your just enjoying a good game, and I hope you contenue to do so. There WILL be people who get bored, but there will be people like you who enjoy Flight for what it is. The big question is, will there be enough people like you to support a game like Flight? I hope so.

Keep enjoying what you enjoy, and dont let people try to convince you otherwise.

I'm definitely picking up the adventure pack shortly but I'm still having fun with the free stuff.

I've heard good things about the RV...should be fun! :)

Does Flight have gamepad controller support?

You could play pretty much any flight game with an Xbox360 pad, copy form another forum for Rise of Flight, but it equally applies to all plane games:

I play using x-box controller and full realism settings. I think I can afford a stick (after all I've spent $236.64 to buy and preorder everything here), but the gamepad just suits almost all my needs.
However, I had to spent a lot of time setting up curves because thumbsticks have some real drawbacks:
- they are a bit loose near the center, thus you have to use a dead zone or rather flat curve near the center.
- they can't reach full horizontal and vertical deflection at the same time because they are limited by a circle, not a square. This again leads to additional dead zones or flat curves near the edges.
- they are rather short, not everybody can be that precise with finger movements. This is even worsened by dead-zones from #1 and #2.
Still, after some practice and tweaking the curves I'm satisfied with what I've got.

This is what I have available at my hands when using the gamepad:

- Left stick for Pitch and Roll control.
- Analogue triggers for rudder. Note that they are analogue thus I have precise control.
- Right stick to look around. Works nicely.
- Left/Right trigger buttons to control throttle - not the best precision, but acceptable.

- "Start" button to start/stop the engine.
- "Select" button to reload guns. It is not very convenient to press "Select" in flight - you have to reach it with one of your hands, but this actually adds at least some realism to instant gun reloads that we have now.

- "X" as blip-button. I'm also considering to double it as reducing the throttle. This may be convenient because I won't need to let my left hand off the stick to reduce throttle, and also somewhat realistic: continuous blipping without reducing the throttle might damage the engine IRL.

- "A" to fire both guns.
- "Y" for snap view that is set up as zoomed out wide view
- "B" is used as snap view that looks through the sight moderately zoomed in.

- D-pad for additional view controls: Up-Down to zoom, Left-Right to corresponding snap-views.
Of course I still have to use keyboard for additional control of mixture, radiator and other stuff.

From facebook:

We're excited to announce some upcoming DLC: the Journey to Alaska Pack, with over 1.2 million miles of captivating scenery, new aircraft and additional missions! Check out our photos for some teaser screenshots.

I wonder how much that will cost?

perhaps this should have been a 360 game ? perhaps would have been more popular

Here are some parts of interviews.

Q: Gaming on Windows has seemed to languish, maybe because so much energy was around Xbox. How much is this release a sign that the Windows game group is back, especially with Windows 8 coming up soon?

A: Some folks on my team will say Games on Windows isn't what it used to be. You're forgetting it is certainly the biggest platform for gaming anywhere, ever. I feel like the PC has been the most successful platform when it comes to gaming because gaming as a whole has become mainstream - 75 million people playing Facebook games of one form or another, that's all on a PC. It didn't happen on a console, it didn't happen on a closed mobile platform.

As Microsoft - to have built that system and allowed that to happen - we don't get to take credit for everything people do on a PC but that didn't happen because we ignored PC gaming. So I think PC gaming is alive and well in fantastic ways in fantastic ways. It's still where the heart of innovation is happening.

Q: Is Flight intended to seed online services and bring people into Microsoft's online realm?

A: I like to think this is both about reimagining a franchise that we know has always been successful. I also think it's part of Microsoft the studio saying 'I want to develop this new muscle.' Maybe because we have so much of the organization focused on the console-side of the business which is more rigid when it comes to business models, you get to ask the PC side to be a little more experimental, a little more exploratory. I relish that opportunity and the team has really jumped on that. We couldn't be doing half the things we do here on a console - this is not a console game that just happens to sit on a PC. This is really a PC game and we're proud of that.

Q: Will you be able to control the game with gestures, if you attach a Kinect sensor?
A: We're not talking about Kinect support at this time but who knows.

Q: It seems inevitable that you'll have a mobile version someday?

A: We may do other stuff in the future but today we're just talking about the PC version of flight. I think Flight has legs. This is a franchise that's going to keep living for a lot of years. We're going to do that by exploiting all the opportunities that are coming at us, whether that's mobile, new operating systems, new hardware. There's a lot of stuff out there and I think Flight is going to be part of that at some point.

Garsands - interesting views in that interview

I really really really dislike Games for Windows though - its so clunky compared to the integrated elements on the 360. I went through what seemed like "5 updates" for Games for Windows to get Flight working properly online wise, and each time I had to exit the game, and the new version of Games for Windows had to install.

Steam even - is far more seemless

I lost ALL of my Batman saves on Games for Windows last year too ..... they were all kept in the cloud, but one day - all had gone !

This is how planes that you have not bought show in multiplayer apparently:

Downloading these will give you the following planes to stop the UFO look they are free.

North American P-51 Mustang Preview
Release date: 27/02/2012
Size: 30.73 MB

Maule M-7-260C Preview
Release date: 27/02/2012
Size: 72.42 MB

It's a bit like iRacing you can't race in a mix class race if you don't own all cars in that race, but flight have got over it by giving the other models as free previews.

STEAM? ;)

More part of interview.

Is Flight exclusive to Games for Windows Live or will it be available via other platforms such as Steam?

It’ll be launching for Games for Windows Live and as any developer, we look at other places that might make sense for the franchise moving forward but we have nothing to talk about at this point today. So right now you’ll see it on Games for Windows Live but the future is the future and we’ll see.

Good interview, thanks for posting it garsands! Its nice to hear about PC exclusive, for one it should mean no compromises in graphics... This also means we should see support for TIR rather soon I guess.

Screenshots look ok-ish, apart form the water shot again - no shores, no shallow water gradient... 2003 IL2's water looks much better.

Yes the rivers shot looks like under the landmass is one big sea with cut outs made into it to look like rivers.
Have to see what it's like moving.

I have just done a mission & the chap in the plane with me told me to start taxing & to watch out for the other traffic, so there is still hope for ATC.
The devs a while ago said that in the full version there would be static planes at the airports showing what the other DLC planes looked like but so far that's not been done.

Been playing around with the missions and it's not a bad little game. Certainlly looks nice.

Only problems are the pricing... I really don't want an endless supply of DLC :(

And the fact most of the missions, chacing the rings and such, you can't even do it with the Icon plane, so you can only use that old bi-plane which has a really terrible viewpoint from the cockpit.

The base planes I found boring, slow & not very powerful the amount of times I crashed just trying to do the hoop challenges, the VAN's RV-6A is a lot faster but it's not free.

Have you clicked on the airports within the main 'hub' part then clicked on 'job board'
You will find missions to do there but limited again with the free DLC to just 'Hawaii Biplane Tours' & '$100 Hamburger' runs.

Again with the paid DLC you get lots more types of missions, light Cargo, Medical Flight, Charter Passengers.... where you need to fly smooth offerwise you damage the cargo or make the passengers sick ect....

'bi-plane which has a really terrible viewpoint from the cockpit.'
I pointed this out in the beta as they even chose this plane to get you to do your first taixing out of the Icon that has a nice clear view they pick the Stearman.
