*** The Official Microsoft Surface Thread ***

What USB3 hubs do you guys use, looking for something with Ethernet on it as well, got a Startech one at the mo (USB31000SPTB), USB3, single Ethernet and single USB3 on it for pass thru, thinking something thats got 3/4 ports on it as well so I can go from onboard USB, to hub, LAN cable as well as plugging in Kb/Mouse/headset reciever.

ST3300GU3B, comes with a power supply as well for external devices that require more power...

Anyone else got any suggestions, I have seen USB hubs in the past for the last gen of Surface that dont have cables, they sit on the side of the device and then just have ports, not sure how that'd work with a Pro3 given the change in port layout...

Still on the lookout for some sort of shoulder bag as well to fit the Pro3, PSU, cables/hubs etc in it as well as passport/wallet and so on for travelling...

So, the Surface 3 can't power the Blu-Ray Drive when it's got a disc in. Just an endless boot loop.

The Acer Ultrabook handles it fine.

I feel like my Surface 3 is kinda useless now. I don't want to pirate, but now I can't watch my legit Blu-rays on the go with it.

Rip them to SD card?

I've got an inateck HBU3VL3-4
It has 1x Gigabit Lan and 3x USB3
Haven't really tested it yet though.

And it's official, the T100 using the keyboard (Which comes free with the device) having a full powered USB port can power up my External Blu-Ray Drive and run content.

But the Surface 3 at triple the price, advertised to replace the laptop can't do the same.

Outstanding Microsoft.

Simple solution to not downloading what you've bought... Don't buy, just download. The more people that do it the sooner the media companies get their arses in gear and come up with a 21st century distribution model...:p

Unfortunately that doesn't solve your problem. It's very short sighted of MS to do that, I assume it's probably to increase battery life of the surface?

It'll be for battery life, but it's far from acceptable lol. I can't imagine it making a massive difference, and even then, they could just have a proper keyboard dock and bung one in. It won't affect how their products reviews, but it'll give it plus points for choice and ability.
MS advertise this as a laptop replacement, but from what I can tell, it's physically impossible to play Blu-ray playback on the go from it.

I used to pirate heavily until about August, and then I blasted about 700 quid in Blu-Rays :p

A 21st Century Disti model wouldn't help either, as I'd be on the road :p. Physical Media still has a place.

When you say it's official, as in you have had confirmation from Microsoft that it doesn't work?
Not just a faulty USB port?
How about using a Y power cable, plug the data side into the surface and then the other end into the PSU's USB charging port?

See, when I moved to uni I copied all my DVD's. Now all my media is available at the click of a button on a single device as I still move around fairly often. So much easier than lugging DVD/BDs around.

The Surface 3 doesn't have a full power USB port.
The Surface 2 gives the exact same behaviour (RT/ARM, it sees the drive, but when a disc is in, can't cope with it)

My drive has a single USB cable, attached to the drive. There's no way of using it with my Surface 3 unless I get a powered USB port.

Even then, it's impossible for the Surface 3 to power a Blu-ray drive on the go.

Basically, MS made the biggest oversight possible.

There's only one way for me to get this to work.
Is there a powered USB hub that exists which is battery powered (Or charged) so it can work portably?

Otherwise it's simply impossible to externally power a Blu-Ray Drive and play Blu-rays on the go with Microsoft's premium Laptop replacements. Unless there's like a very select amount of super low power drives.

And that's your choice.
But even some External HDD's the Surface 3 can't power solely on its own etc, because of a limitation that doesn't exist in the T100!

Microsoft pimp out the Surface's, (Surface 3 especially) as Laptop replacements, yet they can't consume media like a Laptop could, for the sake of nothing.
