*** The Official Microsoft Surface Thread ***

I'm now seriously considering picking up an original Pro second hand as a laptop/desktop replacement since the new dock works with it - it should handle Lightroom, Office, video encoding, the odd indie game and emulators. I've always wanted to try my hand at sketching using a stylus. Note taking is just the icing on the cake.

Same here, always wanted a Pro but could never justify the price.

Nice to see Microsoft CAN'T GET THE STORE TO WORK with pre-orders!!!!

There are probably 3 people trying to order one and they have screwed it up.

The Pro pre-order links worked, then stopped, now the pre order page for Pro isn't there. I tried 5 times to place an order and it kept failing.

The touch cover 2 page links to the type cover 2 page and you can't order that anywhere and they were late to update the site as well.

Pathetic.

I'd wait to see what reviews say about the dock before making a purchasing decision based around it. Looking at the pictures it just shoves connectors into the Mini DisplayPort, USB 3.0 and power. The stuff like the audio and ethernet are attached as USB devices inside the dock.

It looks like you have to sit the Surface in and then push the two sides into it so that the ports connect, it's not the elegant click-in that you got when docking a ThinkPad for example.

Either way, it's a lot nicer than plugging my Ethernet, monitor, keyboard/mouse and DVD drive in separately and having the cables floating around when it's not docked. I've actually stopped using my monitor/peripherals and stick to WiFi now just because it's messy. Will be interesting to see what it's like before buying though :)

£899 for 256gb sounds like good value! Guaranteed to be without a keyboard though.

Sorry to disappoint, before the site stopped loading the Pro the prices were:

64GB £719
128GB £799
256GB £1039 (with 8GB RAM)
512GB £1439 (with 8GB RAM)

I did take screen shots if anyone wants proof but it isn't something
worth lying about.

Shame you have to go up to 256gb for 8gb RAM :/. Will consider it though as an alternative to a MBA, which I'd run W8.1 on anyway!

I've currently got an air (2011) and am very tempted with the new pro. It's all that I've been wanting for ages (mainly the inclusion of a decent dock)... BUT...

I have an iPad mini which I use when I'm away for more than a few days and am travelling light and a 13" air which I use day to day in front of the TV and a desktop with quad core and 16GB of RAM for when I'm processing things.... I'm just not sure the pro 2 will be able to replace one or more of the devices...

Anyone know what processor it has in yet? All I've heard is it's a 1.6GHz i5 Haswell, as powerful as the new Airs? I still love the idea of having one device I can just dock when at the desktop to edit photos but I'm not sure it's powerful enough for those needs (or at least as powerful as the desktop anyway, it'll almost ceelrtainly process photos now...). I'm also still not sure about the aspect ratio, I just find 16x9 too thin for standard web browsing and looking at photos on the move (one of the reasons I bought an iPad mini), also the air sits nicely in my lap when browsing and researching on the sofa, which the pro 2 won't be as good at...

Still going to wait and see though, it could be I end up buying one just to see how it will fit in... They are pretty keenly priced which is good, a fair chunk cheaper than the equivalent air or other higher end ultrabook.

Its a tablet you dont need to rest it on your lap, you pick it up and place it down whenever you want, tab ets are a million times better on the sofa than being constrained to placing it on your lap/arm rest etc.

I know how to use a tablet ;). As I said I have a mini as well which I use if I'm just lounging more. The problem is having lots of tabs open is a pain on a tablet, without a keyboard/trackpad (for things like researching trips/hotels). On the other hand you can get keyboards for the surface and as it is proper windows it will work significantly better with a lot of sites than an iPad...

That's why Im really tempted by one, just not sure it will fit in. Maybe a second hand pro for a few months to see if it works for me... I'll wait until the dock is out either way!

Windows tablets are great for multitasking. Lots of tabs isn't an issue and even better with split screen, with what ever your using to keep track on one side and ie on the other. Can simply copy and past info, prices, urls from one side to the other. Its fantastic for such things.

But yeah might be worth going second in your case and having a feel, i don't have a clue how much power you need for photos.

Well, I wasn't planning on getting the Surface 2, but that was before:

  1. Somebody offered to buy my Surface RT
  2. I remembered I have a £50 Microsoft store voucher from when they delivered my Surface a day late last year

I'm not bothered about Skype, but the 200GB SkyDrive for two years is worth ~£120 and something I was considering anyway. So it looks like I'll be pre-ordering one later. I'd be stupid not to... right?
