*** The Official Microsoft Surface Thread ***

Really really annoyed.

Called John Lewis and they have mis-sorted my package at the depot and so i've receive my Type Cover 2 but my Surface Pro 2 will now not arrive until tomorrow.:mad:

They refunded my delivery charge, after asking for it, but not even really bothered, I just want my damn Surface!!!

His latest article draws a comparison between Microsoft making Windows 8.1 a free update for people on 8.0 with Apple making OS X Mavericks free to anyone who is using OS X 10.6 or newer, which came out in 2009, and heavily implies that Microsoft's offer is the better one because it affects more people. One article where he doesn't think the Surface RT is worth buying doesn't change my opinion favourably, that's just the view of a sane person.

While it's not a fair comparison you should consider Windows and Mac OS are not like for like. Just ask yourself how important Mac OS is to Apple and how important Windows is to Microsoft.

In the grand scheme of things I wouldn't consider it important from either company, Microsoft couldn't seriously charge money for the blue update and Mac OS is just a means to an end but I am curious as to what both companies will charge for their next major version.

I can see apple, not charging again. They make more than enough from hardware and ecosystem (app, video, books etc).
mS i think will gradually reduce their price for home use and may well phase the cost for home use out totally, if it can get a decent percentage and thus make money on hardware and ecosystem.

Not charging is good for two reasons. One you'll get more people and thus more money from ecosystem. Secondly no reason not ti upgrade, so less fragmentation and thus easier for app developers. I have no doubt apple will continue to add more and more app store to os, until its like win8.

I'd say the precedent has been set now and Mac OS is a thing that's free from now on. It ties in with the App Store model of buying the app once means you buy the app, not that current version of it.

It makes sense for a devices (which for the sake of argument you can include Macs in this category) + ecosystem model. For Apple, it's about as clean cut as you can get because they control all the hardware. For Microsoft it's about as clear as mud.

Got my Surface 2 now.
Is anyone elses volume rock "loosish" it seems looser than the RT ever did, that goes for the power button too.

At the top where the two pieces of metal meet, it's not entirely flush.

I kind of wish it was black, I don't think this feels as solid as the RT either.

Cleveland retail park has just got stock as well.

Watch me just have the one dodgy Surface 2 with slight imperfections :p.

Didn't Surface 1 have 10 point touch? My Surface 2 is reporting 5.

Colours are seeming much deeper on my TN Sammy 700D, I don't think that was the case with my RT.

The charging cable is still hilariously short.

While we're on topic, I still don't like the whole power connector design. The magnet is now too strong and there isn't any kind of stress relief boot on the cable. It's still fiddly but in a different way. It is better than it was, though.

Because of the orientation of my room, the charging of the surface is the hardest thing in the world while trying to use it (As in, impossible, I need to change where I am)

Just put on a 1080p MKV with PowerDVD (I had to buy, as well, VLC's taking an age still, and there's no other decent MKV player that seems to be perfect) and it was flawless.
