*** The Official Microsoft Surface Thread ***

They has the Surface 2 at PCW today - it was pretty great. I like the Silver colour a lot more than the fingerprint mag black. Silver looks more sleek and modern.

Screen was noticeably more colorful and sharper.

I love how smooth RT8.1 ran on it and really enjoyed all the little swipe gestures.

Speaker were a bit quiet and tinny - nothing special.

What Youtube app does everyone use? does it do 1080p?

I've been thinking the same thing, its the in-built LTE that swings it for me.

What's the average batter life on the Surface 2 now? still 10 hours plus?

Engadget got 14.5 hours from their standard battery test... For comparison the mini got 12.5 hours. Pretty epic battery life!

Hi guys. I ordered a Surface 2 and i'm expecting it's arrival any day soon. I was curious how I would play video files on this tablet? If I was to open them through the USB? Does the tablet have built in codecs to play all files types or would I need to download a windows app? I know you can't just install windows programs with it running RT.

I think i am going to wait for the Nokia tablet personally, ill pick up a iPad Air over the weekend to tie me over for a while.

I rate Snapdragon better.
But I don't know how that'll translate to Windows RT.

Windows UI seems smooth enough (Although Jetpack Joyride still has lag at the start, my Z1 with Snapdragon 800 doesn't) you're likely not going to notice much if any difference.

anyone know how john lewis returns work? ordered but not had it deliverd nor a dispatch yet, and now want to order via pc world for the 10% off.

Surely the 2 year warranty and undoubtedly superior customer service of JL vs PCW <spit> is worth the extra?

As long as it's unopened, I can't see them having a problem providing a refund. You've got 90 days.*

If the S2Pro had come with a keyboard included I'd have ordered mine from JL by now. I just can't bring myself to buy it and I'm wishing for some sort of pre-Christmas package to make it more purchase-able (that's not a real word, is it?).

*See website for details.

My Surface 2 arrived today hooray! It's funny how spoiled you get, it felt like an eternity waiting for it to show up but compared to the competition PC World were slow to deliver (ordered on Saturday).

Haven't had it that long but I'm positive about the changes, the back feels more like plastic but it's also less fingerprint prone, the volume switch has less play than my original Surface and the power button is firmer and more prominent (I use that button a lot so it's a nice little difference), maybe that will change after it's a year old but it seems like an improvement all round.

The screen appears to be a big improvement, the only downside I've noticed is the back lighting has a bit more bleed (the original also has this but it's very hard to notice) and otherwise the extra resolution, improved colours, it seems to be a lot brighter too and the lack of the grid pattern underneath the display (I assume it was the digitizer on the original Surface) but it can be hard to see without sunlight so not completely certain about that last point.

The type keyboard is very nice, really weird feel when folded back and handheld but I mainly upgraded because despite all the performance improvements the original Surface still isn't great if you're jumping back and forth in IE, animation effects (menus etc) popping up on YouTube and so on. Fortunately the Surface 2 works fairly well here, it's still not as snappy as a desktop but it's responsive enough I don't feel I'm waiting on the machine and considering how much I use the Surface that matters to me.

The speakers are worse though, less bass and considering the original speakers weren't that great it's a shame Microsoft appear not to have bothered much in this area. Some bits of the finish look worse, the top is actually about the same as the original but on the 2 you can see it from the front so it looks worse.
