The Official Nexus S Thread

So true, I've been following prices on the bay of e, they've plummeted, even though top-tier smartphones today aren't that much different specs-wise than those 6 months ago. I blame market saturation, especially HTC.
Even though I know this though I still wouldn't buy a Desire from 6 months ago... the newer models are just so much more desirable for some undefinable reason!

I feel the opposite. I'm waiting for something great to come out as I'm out of contract and messing about on SIM only deals. But nothing is really any better than my Desire. All the 'new' features are really hardly anything to get excited about over a Desire. Wow, so the HD has a bigger yet inferior screen and a nicer camera. Wow so the Nexus S has a few extra bits but a cheap plastic case.

etc.

i agree, my desire is still arguably the best android phone out, when u take into condensation build quality and looks.

im wanting and waiting for something that lasts 3 days without charge!

sod duel core, give me duel batteries... that would be sweet!

Agreed:

HTC DesireHD
  • Sense 2.0 - Massive load of crap, the SenseUI on the Desire adds missing features that stock Android doesn't have. The Sense softeware on the DesireHD is just full of trialware like SoundHound, Navigation. Also they've murdered the UI, they've cluttered it by adding too many ways to get to the same menu.
  • Worse screen
  • No hardware buttons
  • Camera is slight upgrade, not night and day difference.

The Nexus S is just the biggest disappointment ever, adding things like NFC that is hardly used and taking away features that's been in mobile devices for yonks, such as removable storage.

Not sure what my future phone will be, unfortunately the monstrosity they've made of Sense in the DesireHD/Z isn't making me lean towards another HTC phone.

Other Android phones are not appealing to me personally because the other manufacturer UIs are basically skins at best, or too obtrusive like Motoblur/Sense 2.0.

Thankfully, if future devices can be rooted - then I can remove the crap/trialware from the /system partition but we've seen major attempts by manufacturers to stop people rooting their phones.

Good luck with that, I'd love it too but it's not gonna happen for awhile! :( As newer components with lower power requirements come out, OEMs will unfortunately use the extra leeway to up the CPU speed, or improve the screen, or make the radio signals stronger, cause specs get them more kudos with tech journos than things that real people actually NEED, like battery life!

That's part of the reason why RIM are still shifting shedloads of phones even though BBs are arguably underpowered, with tiny screens and a clunky OS: hardware keyboards and not needing to charge every night are actually important to people.

well yeah and no, when we get to duel core that will bring the power consumption down as both cores will sit at lower speeds so therefore should increase battery life, and when i look at the battery in my desire, if they can reduce it in size by 30% they could move things around and fit two in :D

when one dies they other kicks in and bang u double the life :D

Our 3 turned up yesterday. First impressions are that the build quality isn't much different from the Galaxy S that we have which isn't a good thing, the phone is too light and the back is plasticky and cheap feeling.

Functionally I like it a lot so far. My personal phone is an iPhone 4 and so things like the screen, transitions and overall polish are going to be noticed easily by me.

I'm very impressed so far though. Screen is nice and the blacks are very deep. It feels much more complete usability wise than the Desire HD and Galaxy S we have. I like the little things such as the glow when you reach the end of a scroll section and the old skool CRT-like blip when you lock the phone. These are tiny things but add to the user experience which other incarnations fell short of.

It's early days yet, but I feel it's a phone I could live which I think I think speaks volumes considering the iPhone can make you very fussy about some things.

The things you noted that you like, these are the kinds of things that will be on all Gingerbread phones and not just the NS :)

Everything you mentioned is already on the Ginger ROMs for Evo 4G, Nexus 1 , Desire etc but I feel the best has yet to come, dual core phones with HDMI out for a truly portable HTPC :D

Good post, thanks for the info. I'd also be coming from a similar position if I was to go for this phone.

Yeah I appreciate that, but I can only waffle on about the (questionable) build quality for so long :p

The screen is very nice though.

HTC's build quality might be better but I do yearn for that screen! :( In fact, a Desire Z with an SAMOLED screen, or a GSM version of the Epic 4G would be the ideal phone for me... But obviously the appeal of this phone is the software and the fact that you'll be getting future Android versions before everyone else. I doubt either HTC or Samsung will bother upgrade their current models to Honeycomb, whereas this'll be good, possibly even beyond that!

well i have gingerbread on mine, so i would say if it works on the nexus s/ nexus 1 we will have it on the desire

The build looks similar to the Galaxy S I had and I never once thought it was that bad, but compared too the build of the Omnia 7 I have got there is a big difference but its not a deal breaker for sure..

Quick compare for size with the Desire, sorry about the low quality:
