The Official Nexus S Thread

Didn't stoke1863/Reflux buy the Nexus 1 direct from google for £380ish after VAT/Shipping? (Check the ***Nexus One thread***)

The Nexus S costs the same $529. So you'll just have to wait until they eventually chuck it on the Dev store. (+ the £15ish developers fee if you haven't already paid)

yea i did.

it was £380 and then a month later i got a £60 VAT bill.

The CPW price for the Nexus S is daylight robbery

Yea it's a total rip off here in the UK, if your brought it in the states would cost £339 + tax, so even if you tack 20% VAT that makes £406 add another £20 for shipping and you get £426 or so, basically been milked for well over £100 pounds to buy it here in the UK. Rip off Britain

Righto - First impressions.

Feels plasticy, looks ok - it has about the same heft at the Nexus One and the Desire. The screen is lovely and bright and the curve subtle. Build wise it feels a lot like the Nokia 5800 which in my opinion is not a great thing. The touch screen response is easily on par to the N1 and Desire, possibly even a little better.

Browser is QUICK - significantly faster than it's predecessor but fundamentally the same functionality. Keyboard is pretty standard stuff but the predictive is spot on. Really easy to type quickly.

So initial stuff aside... pics!

Yeah for sure less solid. The back is a gloss hard plastic that feels cheap and the front bezel edge is pretty naff. I hate to say it but it feels really typical of Samsung build. The OS experience is nice but the feel of the thing is not.

Not my phone tho so no rooting happening here :D

Had a bit of a fiddle with the contact scanning - seems like it could be a nice little addition to the mobile tool. Be nice to use it for small transactions like buying coffee/lunch and as an Oyster Card alternative...

Be great if this became mainstream. Google probably a bit ahead of the time with this one, but we need to start somewhere :)

Unfortunately you'd have to add another 30% or so import duty if you were to order it, so it'd end up even more expensive than you're getting it here :(
Your only solution is to get a friend to buy it for you over there and send it over in a packet marked "gift" - they're not liable for import duty and usually slip through customs.

No, there's no import duty (customs or excise) on mobile phones. Nor on pretty much all electronics products (including computer components). People who bought the original Nexus One can confirm HMRC only charged them VAT.

I've ordered plenty of things from the states (mainly processors and RAM) and all I pay is VAT + the handling charge of the courier, which has been flat £8 charge by parcelforce for me.

Good general knowledge to have: http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channels...ntent&id=HMCE_CL_000014&propertyType=document

i orderd my Nexus one from USA. There no import duty but you may get a VAT bill down the line

Real shame Samsung are making this, would have been very tempted if it was HTC but I have no interest in the cheap plastic phones Samsung make :(
