The Official Nexus S Thread

ok. do this, bearing in mind it will wipe your phone and data, and it can be risky flashing roms but this is official rom. Make sure the phone is charged. also make sure your phone is the I9020T (or gt9020) you can find out by taking the batt cover off. if so proceed:

download this:
http://android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/google_crespo/ZD3PyN0t.zip
Then, rename it update.zip
Next, connect your phone to the computer with your USB Data Cable.
Copy the update.zip file to the root of your SD card (phone memory).
After, you have copied the file, disconnect your phone to your computer and turn it off.
Go to the bootloader by pressing and holding the volume up button and the power button at the same time.
Once your in the bootloader, select Recovery. To navigate, press the volume up and down and to select, press the power button.
You should see a warning Android logo after selecting the recovery. When you see the warning logo, press the volume up and power button again to go to the Menu.
From the menu, select “Apply update from /sdcard”, and choose update.zip from the list.
Your phone will then update itself.
Once finished, go back and select reboot.

This should sort your issues out. also try turning auto rotate off.

Changing kernels is a different matter all together and involves much more effort. Suggest the above first.

Admaus, is that build newer than the IML74K I am running at the mo?

The method you posted is what I used when the ICS update first came out (downloaded straight from Google servers, as my phone never OTA updates over T-Mo for some reason).

Cheers,

Suman

no, but did you get the 160mb file (and not the smaller update). IT seems like those who downloaded the smaller update have more issues than those that went for the full.

Ah ok gotcha - I got the smaller update.

I'll just RTFD and reflash with the 160MB one tonight... fingers crossed!

Cheers,

Suman

Hi all.

Can anyone recommend a good windscreen cradle for the Nexus S. I have looked on the auction site but there are many to choose from and I know how fragile they can be so I'm wary of buying any old rubbish. Don't mind spending £10-15 on a really good quality one.

I also need a cigarette lighter charger. Would I cheapo one do or should I buy an official Samsung one?

Cheers.

Ok, factory reset, then flashed with the full 160MB ROM. Minimal number of apps installed... problem persists:

WTF? Ridiculous!

I did notice something though... after I installed Swype I wanted to download UK English... now it is permanently queued, and I noticed that the WiFi indicator started showing almost constant activity after this. Pretty sure I did the same thing last time as well... maybe Swype is somehow keeping the system awake? Going to reinstall Swype and see what happens if I don't mess around with the languages...

Hey Sumanji, I rooted and went back to gingerbread 2.3.6. I don't get drastically better battery life with this. I really need decent battery life. Wondering if rooting again and installing a custom ROM is a way to go. How many hours of screen time are you getting with ICS?

Today I got 51 mins display on use and I got 35% left.

Stock ICS (160mb file) + unlocked + rooted + speedy 4 ICUP kernel = lots of battery and ICS.

currently on 13hrs with no charge, 73% battery remaining - light use (22% screen on, 25% Android OS)

Ok, so I've gone through a few charge/discharge cycles and not had the battery life problem again... pretty sure it is Swype's fault!

Can anyone else help me test this please?

Su

Hey Sumanji. I have seem comparable battery life to gingerbread after I flashed the 160mb ICS update file (as adamau5 stated) to my Nexus S on 2.3.6. So far I'm happy with this apart from the slow USB transfer speed on ICS.

Now just a general question. What speeds are people getting on speedtest on the mobile data network... wondering if orange is just slow or it is the device itself. I have seen 2-3mb and thats as high as it goes.

Fairly speedy here on O2, I get 2154kbps with the Speedtest.net app.

As far as battery life is concerned mine has been pretty good, no worse than Gingerbread maybe even a tiny bit better.

Not sure.

Some people on XDA say its back up rolling but no one knows for sure. I don't even think Google has commented on the original OTA suspension from December. I wish they were a bit more vocal about these things.

stock ICS rom rooted + eugene373 speedy 7 is a fantastic combo. 2 day battery is achievable (with use!) and its quick.

thoroughly recommended from me
