The Official Nexus S Thread

How useless can google get? All their OTA updates for a total of three devices take weeks to months to get pushed to everyone's devices. It's not like there are plenty of nexus devices out there.

Yup, kinda frustrating knowing that the latest and greatest software is available to me as a Nexus owner, but that I need to jump through numerous flaming hoops in order to get it installed

I maintain that Windows Phone 7 ftmfw :p

Yup, I am pretty disappointed and shocked at their service lately :(

Before the GN, they were decent at getting updates rolled out for everyone in the same time period pretty much etc. but now they are no better than the other android devices/companies regarding this area.

1. As said, the length of time it has taken to roll updates out and fix some things
2. They didn't even give the nexus one the ICS update officially due to hardware not supporting it, yet on XDA there are plenty of fully working ICS ROMs.......

Those reasons were more than enough to sway me over to the nexus devices, but not any more. Hence why I don't think I will bother getting the GN (despite the lovely screen and pure stock android) now but the GS 2 instead as it is more future proofed regarding hardware and has great support at XDA.

Exactly.

I'm starting to wonder what the hell this 'check now' button is all about. Surely the OTA gets pushed to you when your turn is up. Surely the point of the button is to say to Google's servers 'hey I'm ready for the update'. If it can't do that function than what is the point in it.

All these people pushing this button all around the world for nowt.

I wouldn't go so far as to say I would not buy another Nexus device - that's being a bit dramatic. At the end of the day, I get my updates way before "branded" manufacturer devices, and without all the bloaty crap that goes with it... just that it takes a lot of dicking about to actually acquire/install them!

It's just annoying for me, and frankly embarrassing for Google, that their "Experience" devices don't really deliver that perfect vanilla expierence that they really should... as Warren says, the "Check Now" button is a bit of a joke!

Talking about getting ICS first, hasn't some of the Galaxy s2's started to receive that update? By that count my Nexus S didn't officially get 4.0.3 till I manually updated in December. In fact like you Sumanji, I have never received a notification of any update since owning the device and it has always been through downloading a update.zip file or rooting and installing a stock image.

Terrible bugs at present at 4.0.3: Crazy battery drain compared to gingerbread on 3G at idle and extremely poor USB transfer speeds. What's the point of having USB mass storage when it's this slow haha. Suffice to say It feels like a small company is releasing a geek update for their phone and it does not feel like an update is coming from Google.

Not really.

The whole point of a nexus device is for stock android and to be sure that you are going to get the updates (officially) and well before all the other devices. I am not just talking about what has happened with the nexus s regarding this update but the other stuff that I listed and the below.

The way that you guys with the nexus S have got them, hasn't gone as smooth as what it should and have resulted to flashing the images, rooting etc. just to get the update, no worse than what the people with other mobiles like the GS 2 have had to do in order to get the latest updates, but they also gain many useful features and improvements at the same time.

And what Teddy said:

Yup, I think the 3 and o2 branded GS 2 have started to receive the ICS update a week ago. And pretty much fully working ICS custom roms have been around for about 3-4 weeks IIRC.

And that is also another reason! They seem to be releasing these big updates now with a lot of bugs for the older devices e.g. when the nexus s was released with 2.3, iirc the nexus one got the update a few weeks later but had all sorts of problems and so they pulled it (just like they did with ICS and the nexus s) and nexus one users didn't see that update for about another 6-8 weeks.

The ICS update for the nexus S was pulled and was only put back again not that long ago and some users still aren't getting the update and have had to resort to other methods instead, which you shouldn't have to do with a nexus device and it was exactly the same for the nexus one with the 2.3 update.

So don't be surprised when the next big update for android is released and only the newest nexus device has it well before the others and the GN gets it 1+ month later with some bugs meaning it has to be pulled for it and waiting for 3 months again and then having problems actually getting the update officially like the current nexus S owners with the ICS update.

And then that leads to my other point, if users have to flash the image manually, root etc. well then you are comparing it against the community at XDA for other devices like the GS 2, who have had ICS pretty much fully working minus a few features or a bug or 2 for more than a month now IIRC. And rooting and flashing a custom ROM now a days is very easy and quick, takes 15 minutes max and you get better features/tweaks/improvements in these ROMs than a stock android ROM.

Did you not read the other part as well:

2. They didn't even give the nexus one the ICS update officially due to hardware not supporting it, yet on XDA there are plenty of fully working ICS ROMs.......

And also googles communication with the community regarding all of this has been dreadful, have they actually released any statements that go into some detail about this whole situation?

So to summarize:

- People got their GN's on the 17th November

- official update for the NS started to roll out on 17th Dec

That is a 1 month wait for ICS on a nexus device! Was roughly same time for the nexus one and 2.3 as well

- However, due to problems, it got pulled not long after

Reports are saying that the OTA update which was stopped in December is due to roll out again "within the next few weeks".

And the update was officially brought back on the 28th March, apparently;

That is around 3 months wait then!

4.0.4. is out and its meant to be fast :)

Flashing details here:

I think I'll wait for OTA.

The GS 2 on o2 and 3 networks started to receive the ICS update officially about a week ago IIRC (and I haven't seen anyone reporting bugs with it yet).

However, as you can see from the above comments in this thread, it appears that people still aren't getting the update OTA and for all we know, it could be another week or 2 or even a month till that gets sorted....

And again, there has been no word from google regarding this as far as I am aware.

Now you could say that it is just a one off and that the chances of it happening again are very slim, but given what happened with the nexus one and 2.3 and how it was the pretty much the same situation regarding all the above, my faith :p in google and pure nexus devices is not as strong any more and I was one of the ones who would defend nexus devices for the extra price over mobiles that had better hardware and the reasons for buying nexus devices over the others in general and the biggest reasons where for the updates etc.

Now the only reason to get a nexus device IMO is if you want pure stock android or the latest android update (if you want the next one jelly bean or whatever it is going to be called then you're better of buying the newest nexus device and the nexus S may not even receive that update officially....) without having to root and flash a custom ROM (but with the 2nd last nexus device i.e the GN will be when the new nexus and update is released, be prepared to wait for a while)

EDIT:

Should also note that it's not as if Google have a large range of devices to support like HTC, samsung etc. they only have the 2 devices to support now.......

So you want to compare OTA updates on a Nexus to rooted flashing on other devices? That's a fair way to compare is it?

How many people on the SGSII have actually had an OTA of ICS, 4½ months after its release?

Sigh

re read my post again slowly :p

I have explained everything pretty clearly there.

Where did I say that first part?

And ics has not been available that long for the gs 2 officially in the uk, it has only been available for the last few weeks on the O2 and 3 branded handsets (but again that is sooner than the people with the nexus S as they aren't getting it OTA and are having to flash the image manually or just rooting and putting a custom ROM on in the end)

I don't care if you guys don't care :p

But the FACTS have all been stated in that wall of text above and not just from this forum but many other forums as well. And as I said before, I was a massive defender of google and the nexus series for the update reasons, probably the most on this forum, just read my posts at the beginning for the GN and it is pretty obvious.

Just don't be surprised and having internet rage when the next BIG update (and the new nexus device to show it off) is out and google don't give the nexus S the new version officially for reasons "hardware doesn't support it" and the GN gets it a month later and then pulled for about 3 months or something similar.
