The Official Nexus S Thread

Yay update to 4.1 mid July!!

I think this phone has been well looked after with it updates. First phone with 2.3 Gingerbread > then we got 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich > now one of the first devices with 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Best phone I've owned.

Nexus One was 2.1 to 2.2 to 2.3.x and the only reason it didn't get ICS was because there was no space.

January 5 2010 release date and ICS was out October 19 2011.

Not bad either.

Would be excellent if the update turns up promptly. I'm pretty sure some features may not be as good as google make out. With the single core processor and 512 mb ram, the Google Now and voice actions may be a lot slower.

Though atm, I find the battery to be very lacking, especially on 3G. I get barely a day with moderate use.

How old is the battery? They do deteriorate over time.

512MB RAM is plenty. The GPU is just a lower clocked version of the one in the Galaxy Nexus as well.

Yeah me too. Battery is a bit bad with 3g on.

I would like a Galaxy Nexus but I think the size would be too much for me. The Nexus S is the perfect size.

I think I will stick with NS for at least another year.

I will be interesting to see what the people over on XDA cook up with 4.1 for the NS

Yeah the N1 was good with updates too. I can't see myself going away from the Nexus brand from now on. People with HTC, Sony dual cores have been waiting 6- 7 months for ICS. That is just unacceptable.

Well I got the Nexus S around January 2011. Any ideas on how to determine battery health without buying a new one and comparing?

Well an information app I have installed can provide this

I'm guessing it can read the raw values of mAh remaining to come to that "good" conclusion. So maybe another app will give read outs of that.

The nexus one should have got ICS officially as there are fully working ROMs on XDA etc. (if some people can bring ICS to it in their free time then I am pretty sure that people who work on this stuff from 9-5 at google could get it to work as well :p) It took a month for the Nexus S to get ICS, however, it had a few issues and therefore had to be pulled and some people only started getting the ICS update three months later (unbranded handsets), so in total it was four months wait. It was also the same for the gingerbread 2.3 update regarding the nexus one IIRC (talking about the official updates, not custom ROMs etc.)

They seem to have some serious bugs (the first new updates), particularly the first 4.0.4 update for the GN, where the signal was cutting out an awful lot and it took a decent amount of time to get that fixed.

Hoping that there won't be similar problems with the GN and NS this time considering the update isn't as big.

No idea, didn't even think that was possible???

Had a look on XDA and there are even sense V4 ICS ROMs for it

Couldn't see any mention of the ROMs being installed on the SD card at all.

It was the same for the desire and 2.3 with the new sense, HTC said they couldn't bring 2.3 to the device due to hardware not supporting it and that the experience wouldn't be as smooth, yet the folks at XDA got it working not long after the nexus one got it........ (with sense as well), it even has ICS now as well.

I have flashed the latest Jelly Bean update on my Nexus S. I needed a custom recovery and copied and pasted the update file (114mb) and then installed it. Initial impressions are that it is slower than Jelly bean on the galaxy Nexus but feels the same as ICS so far.

I have noticed that app switching is much faster and general UI transitions feels softer? Google Now works quite well too. Can show pictures, directions, calls, set timer/alarms, texts, weather. There is male voice for mine, not the American lady. Wifi seems to drop occasionally but I have had that problem with ICS. Calls and texts work fine. Exchange Emails work fine as before. Browser is faster.

Decided overall, it is better than ICS, as I was installing all the apps again. Notifications much improved. Not bad for the second major update in 2 years!

Yep!

Simulatorman, do you still have your Nexus S ??

It really feels like a different phone! Other things I have found:

1) Menu's open faster.
2) Your able to swipe and access pictures you have taken from the camera app seamlessly
3) Keyboard auto-correct seems more accurate
4) Google Now is very useful. You can voice search through it by holding the search key or go to to Google now app by tapping the search key. Search for nearest Pizza place or set alarm at 9.30pm for example. Ask when the olympics are and it tells you.
5) Browser is much better, scrolling and html5 videos work better. It loads faster too, faster than ICS for comparison
6) Can do much more in notification bar, such as hang up call or call back someone after a missed call
7) WiFi has support for WPS push button on certain routers. You can set it to not connect to wifi if it has a poor connection
8) USB file transfer is still slow as first seen in ICS. I use wifi file transfer most of the time or use things like drop box to upload/download anyway.

Overall, I had quite a journey with this phone, 6 months left on my 2 year contract. I have seen Gingerbread>Ice Cream sandwich>Jelly Bean. This is by far the most complete release and I feel we are unlikely to get the next update as the software has really maximised the hardware the phone has.
