My advice is just leave it and try a soft reset before bedtime. if that doesn't fix it, just leave it till the battery runs out.

It will work again, mine did exactly the same.

Well my phone was on the charging plate, came back up to a black screen, picked it up and the whole thing was pretty hot, hit the power button and got a battery with a question mark symbol, not it seems the battery is dead. In fact just touch it again the screen is scalding.

you're at step 2.

Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone 8

Step 1Make sure the charger is disconnected.1. Switch the power Off.2. Press and hold the Volume down and connect the charger, if succeed an exclamation mark (!) is shown on the screen.

Step 2Then input the keys in the following order:1. Volume up2. Volume down3. Power4. Volume down

Step 3The phone will reset and boot up automatically. Please note that this may take several minutes.

The most important thing to remember is not to rush it ... give it time to do it's thing.

I was at the same situation as you, put it down and pondered my options, looked down and it saw the "Welcome to your new Windows Phone".

For the dialer....

You mean the number keypad for dialing numbers?

As in, click on the Phone tile and then the keypad button at the bottom.

Not my picture but this:

The phone is scalding now, I have it connected to my USB on my surface, this cant be right!

I think you should leave it a bit to cool down.

Sorry if I have missed something you posted cu3ed but it might be an idea to do a flash which will reset everything even if you are on the latest update via the windows software that I linked a few pages back.

The automated updates and resets via the phone are not very good. Let your PC handle everything.

Once you have it installed and updated there is no real need for instructions.

It is designed for retail store workers to flash to fix customers phones.

Just ask here if you run into any issues.

Here, watch this while you download everything:

Well connected it to the PC, as it died, again, just getting the battery to low symbol, so its not being seen by the Nokia software.

This is becoming a bit of a thin joke now.
