****The Official Note III Thread****

I'll take plastic if it means a removable back cover to replace the battery and extra SD storage over a closed aluminium body anyday tbh.

Clever design (antenna is built into the metal body, first phone ever) but not at the cost of battery drain. Just makes it a more complicated process for the manufacturer (more money, more time etc.)

Saying that the iphone 5 has good signal etc. too. Plus I don't have any problems with my one S.

So you have never noticed how much quicker mobile phones flatten the battery when you have weak cell coverage ?
modern transceivers can vary power levels dependant on signal strength. Virtually no matter how they have designed the aerial, if it's integrated, a metal housing will suffer RF blanking more than a plastic housing at certain angles and we all know they are far from perfect.

Oh without a doubt, battery life will be crap if you have poor signal, signal is one of the biggest factors in battery life along with the screen, however, generally poor signal is not due to a phone being made out of metal, it is either poor network coverage or/and a poor antenna and/or design elements e.g. Richy on here finds Motorola phones (the razr i and hd) to be the best for signal out of the gs2, iPhone, HTC one X and s and iirc he lives out in the country so signal is poorer than average.

The HTC one, one s and iPhone 5 have great battery life, better than most phones that are made out of plastic.

It certainly isn't something that I would worry about anyway unless you have a death grip like the 4s.....

iirc Brian said the HTC one doesn't suffer any of those sort of problems. Will need to read the anandtech review again.

This all kicked off because this guy:

seemed to think that the Note III build quality cannot be any better than that of the II so long as it's still made of plastic.

I made no mention of plastic or lack thereof in the post of mine that he quoted, so I have no idea why he started banging on about plastic :D.

You said "because the only thing missing from the II for me is the build quality" to which i replied it's going to be plastic too. What i was getting at is what is the actual thing missing from build quality.. because i have the Note 2 and there is nothing wrong with the build quality unless you mention it's made of plastic instead of metal. So what is wrong with the build quality for you then? the finishing of the build or the material used?

I wasn't trying to kick anything off i'm just curious to what you think is wrong with the build quality lol

Peace out.... that guy.

They can keep the back plastic for all I care, just make it more premium looking like the Moto X back.

SD card over a sealed back anyday.

Isn't it known already that the N3 will come in 3 build quality styles?

I didn't know this... do you mean as in different materials to be used? If so that is great news it should make a lot of people happy including myself. I have no problems with the plastic of the Note II but i would pay a little more for a metal N3 :)

Yeah if there is going to be a metal one i hope it's not going to be a fully sealed unit. Changeable battery and upgradeable memory were keys factors when i was choosing the N2.

To have a removeable metal back it will need to be a slide on cover. I'll be surprised if Samsung do this, as you have the camera in the way.

Yeah there was an insider rumour that it will come in 3 styles, premium, mid and standard with the top premium one sporting higher end materials, perhaps alloy/carbon or something I don't know. The screen will also be a tougher glass, unbreakable iirc whilst the lower one will use something else.

Very intriguing can't wait to see what it will be like. I hope Samsung do pull all the stops out on this one

That's a good idea. I would always go with the plastic model as it's a LOT more durable, and likely to be cheaper.

Let all the muppets pay over the odds for a "premium" heavy feel.

Premium doesn't always mean heavy though. Carbon Fibre is very solid yet very lightweight, if used then it could weigh a bit less than the plastic one but feel a lot tighter in the hand, for example.

A fair point, but I bet it just means the usual aluminium and glass rubbish.

I imagine the higher end model would use the flexible screens Samsung have been showing off lately to avoid breaking when dropped.

Comes down to how well the plastic is finished/designed. If not done to a good standard then plastic isn't much, if any more durable than anodized aluminium i.e. just look at mrk's note II where he dropped it a few times, has a dent/crack look (similar to aluminium), then the amount of people who have complained about scratches on their GS 3 and note II back plastic covers etc.

If aluminium isn't finished properly then it will suck but if done very well then it is pretty damn durable against scratches etc. Just watch videos on youtube where the htc one gets scratched by keys etc. you can rub the marks of and it looks brand new again.

For example my one S has a few nicks from a waist height drop onto bumpy concrete, however, the plastic trim around the glass screen looks much worse than the aluminium body (only a bit of the MAO layer came of, which is easily fixed with a sharpie pen :p)

I don't see how people who want a premium/more solid feeling device are "muppets"

Plus as mrk said, premium doesn't = heavy i.e. one s is 119g and iphone 5 is 112g iirc but they still feel a lot more premium/solid than most heavy plastic phones.

At the end of the day, the most important thing (screen) will most likely always break/crack regardless of the type of material used for the casing when dropped on concrete. Hopefully the rumours about this unbreakable screen are true.....

They can keep the back plastic for all I care, just make it more premium looking like the Moto X back.

+1

No problem with plastic whatsoever as shown by the likes of the one x, moto x, lumia phones.

The only problem I have with Samsung etc. phones is the finish of the plastic i.e. the pattern look with a glossy smooth finish, just doesn't feel that nice to touch, fingerprints and grease galore + builds up grub more easily than a textured matte back or aluminium casing I find.

Hyperglaze yo. I wonder who at Samsung was thinking this is a great idea :p.

To be fair the S4 doesn't feel that bad in the hand I think overall it is a nice feeling device, but maybe I'm just used to plastic.
