** The Official Nvidia GeForce 'Pascal' Thread - for general gossip and discussions **

That's the thing Nvidia is using 10GBPS GDDR5X which appears to early run RAM,and the lowest officially listed is 12GBPS GDDR5X.

So,I can see a refresh with faster RAM,coming round the corner.

That means a refreshed GTX1080 would have more bandwidth than a GTX980TI!!

Edit!!

I expect Nvidia will hold back to see what Vega is like.

Not sure if the 1080 actually uses 12Gb/s chips clocked at 10Gb/s, or if the ones on the 1080 are rated lower, but I read that the Zotac card is clocked at 11.3Gb/s, so that looks like they might be 12Gb/s. I don't really like OCing memory more than a small amount (as that usually seems to be the thing that will cause problems etc), so hopefully the custom cards come with 11-12Gb/s. If they come at 11-11.5GB/s then that will be 352-368Gb memory bandwidth which is pretty damn good.

Finally someone has some sense on here XD. It boggles my mind that folks with 980ti's and Titan Xs are selling their top end GPUs to upgrade to what won't be the best GPU of the new generation. I bet those same folks will also jump on the hype train when the 1080ti is announced with even better performance and sell their 1080s to buy 1080ti's lol. Oh well, their loss. Unless they have amazing GPU selling skills to minimise losses. Folks can upgrade as often as they like, but too often and it's not as worth it. 980ti is barely a year old.

Of course there will always be better GPUs, but the more often one upgrades, the less benefits one gains. Strike a balance between often and not so often, stick to one tier and upgrade within that tier for best gains. IMO, the people with the best returns are those on the mid-range ladder, going from 770 > 970 > 1070. Quite the upgrade each time.

All that said, I'm planning a silly move of upgrading from mid to high 970 > 1080ti. The jump from Maxwell to Pascal will be huge, but Volta won't be as great to upgrade to from Pascal.

It actually makes more sense, financially. If people sell their GTX980TI and Titan X cards before the GTX1080 hits, they lose less value, and the upgrade to the GTX1080 won't be much, and it will be faster.

Rinse and repeat when the GTX1080TI comes and you probably have lost less money, than holding onto a GTX980TI or a Titan X and then upgrading to a GTX1080TI.

Ok,that might be something then - but there are faster GDDR5X chips being made,so I can see Nvidia refreshing the GTX1080 at some point.

I was only saying that since all the leaked GTX1080 pictures have GDDR5X modules which cannot be indentified on the Micron website and the speed seems lower than the lowest speed GDDR5X on their website.

It could be that production cards use 12GBPS chips though.

Regarding overclocking - as long as you hit the rated specs for the chips it should be OK AFAIK.

It will be interesting to see how much the GTX1080 gains from memory overclocking.

Current guess is 2017 Q1.

But if rumours are to be believed and AMD release Vega early in October likely smashing the 1080, then we may see it come out prematurely, albeit at a very high price with limited stock.

They need to release Polaris first,LOL!! :p

Right, tidied up the last few pages.
Guys, arguing is fine, discussing things is fine, taking it slightly off topic to talk about related things is fine, arguing for the sake of arguing is NOT fine, posting complaints about Dons is NOT fine.
If you have an issue with the moderation then post in the Forum Contend Discussion section and have a conversation with the mods directly. Discussing it in here just adds to the stuff that is being complained about.

Well you can either, a) get good card like 980ti then keep it for a couple of years until the value is low but you can get a massive upgrade, eg. 980ti > 1080ti or 1180 b) keep replacing with small upgrades which overall will add up to a bit more, but you get to have the best performance at all times.

Look here : http://wccftech.com/zotac-geforce-gtx-1080-pgf-edition/

On the pictures of the new Zotac application, the memory clock speed is listed as 5650mhz, which if that is the actual speed, would be 11.3Gb/s memory speed, which would be 361Gb memory bandwidth, which looks like they are running 12Gb/s chips underclocked on the reference card. But that might not be correct, not sure why they would put that clock speed there otherwise though. If the memory will happily run at 11.5Gb/s that would be 368Gb memory bandwidth. Or possibly the custom cards use different ram chips IDK.

Yep,it also means Upgradetitus is also fulfilled too!! :p

It does seem a tad weird - maybe Nvidia is being cautious with the reference models??

Yeah I've now sold my 980 ti I have 400 in my MM account waiting to buy a 1080 in a couple of weeks.

I'll then sell the 1080 when the ti hits ...As the 1080 will still be current gen I'll only lose a bit on it.

Here's hoping the 1080 will live up to the 2ghz overclocking hype...either way it's new shiney and it won't be a downgrade at least...:p

According to a forum member on another forum, these are the scores with the 1080 @ 2.5GHz:

Amazing if true!

That would make more sense, if it is at 2.5Ghz eg. the score actually makes sense with the overclock, but why does it say 2.1Ghz?
