Couple of sites have had test cards reaching peak wattage of 300W briefly.

Sustained power draws of 220-260W have been common.

That's miles over the 180W TDP.

Is that just for the card and not the system ..if its just the card well that is a wee little crazy to say its a 5 phase 180w card i thought a 6pin can only do 150w and 75 watt on the mobo through the pcie lanes ? not much room is there

8-pin is 150w

6-pin would be 75w

And yes, another 75w from the mobo slot

He is talking about a review where they measure maximum and minimum spikes etc.

From what I read the 1080 has very good power consumption, similar to a 980.

The TDP is around 180w at default and then about 20% higher than that if you increase the power limit, which should be under the 75w + 150w for the PCI-E slot + 8 pin power around 225w with the full power limit and 180w with normal settings.

The numbers get more interesting as we measure power consumption while running a loop of Metro: Last Light at Ultra HD. After the graphics card warms up to a toasty 84 degrees Celsius (10 degrees under its thermal threshold), power consumption registers 173W. Prior to the warm-up phase, we were seeing 178W, which is the limit defined in Nvidia's BIOS. In other words, the company was right on with its 180W TDP rating.

Gaming Power Consumption with Overclocking

Now let's switch to gaming under the highest overclock we could achieve with our GeForce GTX 1080 sample. Getting there required setting the power target to its 120% maximum and increasing the base clock to facilitate a 2.1GHz GPU Boost frequency.

It comes as no surprise that consumption rises 19% from 173W to 206. That's not particularly good news for enthusiasts concerned about their eight-pin power connectors, but it's still a fairly realistic goal that shouldn't cause any damage to your hardware.

I hope Nvidia have not ruined this card with the FE thing, if the other cards come in above the FE amount, that is a very cynical thing for Nvidia to do, I want a 1080, but if the other cards are MORE than the FE and what Nvidia said about helping out the partners / brands etc. was not true, then a lot of people are going to not bother with this card. Yes it is good.... but its supposed to be a mid-high end card like the 980 was, although a bit better obviously compared to that.

Try reading around ... some haven't stuck to the PR line quite as closely as Tomshardware have (they never deviate around NVIDIA launches or big PR campaigns).

It's not a 180W card.

Of course a highly OC'd card is going to hit higher power draws. This goes for absolutely anything. But show us where reference cards at stock values are hitting above the stated claims. Let's see em.
 
an overclocked card using a lot more power is not news
if it cant handle the power it needs i guess thats news
i see the future, a crazy priced 2x8pin card! possibly with a big gold heatsink donald trump would be proud of

looking around all i am seeing is between 178w to 184 at stock at full tilt but once you oc the thing its going to increase but there is a limit and that's the 8 pin limit + pcix lane 150w + 75w if i am correct but again i am no atx gpu engineer

180W TDP - it is only loosely related to the cards power draw and TDP is not a peak figure either.

225W yeah but typically a device wouldn't be designed to exceed about 212W draw with those connections IIRC.
