** The Official Nvidia GeForce 'Pascal' Thread - for general gossip and discussions **

The Founder Edition IS the reference edition.

It's just a lot more expensive than it used to be.

The rational is that Nvidia don;t undercut their partners, who can come in with custom cards at a lower price (£550 etc)

The truth is that they will price them the same or higher, and we will be paying £650 for a Gigabyte G1 1080

Hope i'm totally wrong lol

That is Nvidia's excuse, if it turns out this is a risk production run and there isn't real supply for a further 2-3 months then the reason for the price was to scare as many people off so people aren't buying because of the price rather than because it's out of stock.

If supplies are better than that, then it's an excuse for them to jack up the price.

There is no logical reason where if Nvidia raise the prices, faster, better cooled cards that overclock better and/or run quieter will be cheaper. If Nvidia was worried about being competitive so they priced up their editions so AIBs could sell at the 'normal' price without stealing AIB sales... then all these AIB cards would cost less than the Nvidia one.

So where are the standard editions? They said that they would be available from the 27th as well, that it was all a misunderstanding and that both reference and normal editions would be available at the same time.

It seems you are another victim of the GPU hypetrain that relies on your missinterpretation of a deliberatley vague statement.

Nvidia claimed that AIB versions of 1080 would be available on 27th as well as their own reference FE. People made the mistaken assumption that meant custom cooled or non reference FE versions, though who knows these are pre-order only.

A fair few here argued that 1080 would be released at 980 prices (ROFL). When I brought up the 780 price I was told "it has a big die and 1080 isn't, so it will be cheaper".

I must admit, even I was wrong because I mistakingly assumed ~£500 for 1080. Who knew even Nvidia would outdo themselves on pricing a mid range upgrade. But but but, it's faster than 980Ti. :p

Its not the 27th yet. ;)

;)

I think I'd be taking myself off the local cliff top if I'd sold a 980ti in the 300 range for one of these.

You'd be better of putting a custom card under water, it looks like the reference cards throttle due to power constraints as well.

I agree, even with hybrid cooler the 1080 is not getting much higher OC headroom thab ~2.1Ghz and nowhere near the hoped 2.5GHz. Waith for custom cards to see if they are any better with improved PCB and power.

Exactly, why would AIBs sell the reference 1080 for more than their custom cooled editions that run better due to far superior cooling solutions.

FE edition £620
MSI Gaming edition with custom cooling and higher boost clocks and far more sustainable OC. £520

I just don't see it happening.

I don't understand why people are shocked/upset with the price. This is what happens when there is no competition, it will only get worse once AMD completely withdraw from PC graphics cards and just focus on consoles etc.

All that AMD bashing had a price after all you know :) I can name quite a few people here who made countless "overclockers dream" and various other AMD bashing posts, funny how it's the same people crying that they can't afford the 1080 now.

I'll be ordering a EVGA 1080 next week, looking forward to it.

In fairness many of the "custom coolers" are cheap bits of metal and plastic. I can see the founders edition (reference) being more expensive to make than quite a few of them.

I keep hearing that there is no competition from AMD? How can this be?

the 390 smashes the 970 and is cheaper.
the 390x smashes the 980 and is cheaper.

There is competition, people just don't buy it lol.

That's not really the point though, and I don't know anyone who buys a card ONLY because it's made of expensive materials. Vast majority will choose a card based on its speed, temperature, noise and OC ability. The AIB cards will trump the FE across the board on these criteria. Yet people think they will charge LESS money?? HAHAHAHA! :D:D

I don't understand why people are shocked/upset with the price. This is what happens when people pay any price for any card just to be first in line,so expect Vega to be priced very high too due to them. It also means all the cheaper cards get worse performance improvements, meaning more of us have to spend more and consoles will become a more viable alternative. This means we get more and more console ports with cinematic 30FPS and 60FPS settings.

FTFY.

:p

14NM/16NM milking here I come.

Expects the GTX1060 and Polaris 10 midrange GPUs now to be £250 instead of well under £200!!

:(

I would understand the no competition comment if AMD (and even Nvidia) had nothing planned within the next 1-6 months. At these prices I am playing a wait and see game. Even if Polaris comes in at 980Ti/Fury X speeds at £400 then 1080 at £620 looks like poor value.

Vega and large Pascal would need to be years away for me to consider a mid range chip at £620 even remotely decent value.

It's not the cost of the parts it's the perceived value of a better performing version.

Expect milking to a level we never seen before.

Nvidia is testing the waters to see what they can get away with charging for a 300MM2 chip.

The GTX680 was just over £400 at launch and this is £600+ so even taking inflation and the weaker pound into consideration,it is a massive price hike.

If people desperate to be first in line buy one,Nvidia will know there is a market for it.

AMD who are no better, will then price Vega around the same(or maybe a few quid cheaper) and soon instead of £400ish top end cards,it becomes £600 - not bad in a few years.

It is in both companies interest to fix prices as highly as possible IMHO OFC.

Now I don't care if people spent above the odds for things but it also affects me too.

It also means all the cards under that will be pushed up by £50 to £100. This is what annoys me.

14NM/16NM milking generation here we come.

Its a joke when the shortest lived part of the PC,costs more than the rest of the PC.

It makes consoles look more viable alternatives too,and we end up with more PC games being console ports with cinematic 30FPS and 60FPS settings.

Le sigh.

:(

the 390 smashes the 970 yet in doom 4 the 970 smashes the 390 :p

they close to each other its just who has worked with who while making the game or gave them a few million for the extra frames :D

if the 1070 is as fast as the 980ti or just under its £400 minimum.

I reckon this all but confirms the 1070 is going to be north of £400 with ease! If it's a 980Ti beater then expect £500+. Sad times. :(

Well i am gob smacked at the 1080 price ...

Yes looks like the 1070 will be £449 + what a joke

and you wonder why peeps move over to a console yes i know maybe not as fast ect ect ... but at these prices i would rather have a ps4 and spend the rest on ALE... ;)
