Didn't realise every British voter was both a member of parliament and goverment! Woohoo!

Come on, head out of sand! As a result of the Leave vote, in time UK citizens will be able to hold lawmakers to greater democratic account than before (ie, in comparison to when the unelected and unaccountable EU Commission decided laws and made us subject to them).

The whole referendum was about democratic accountability. Certainly, the system in the UK needs further reform. But no ifs and buts, lawmakers must be democratically accountable. Voting Leave was a vote for democracy, and British democratic values. The European Union elites forgot that democracy is the one thing Britain holds most dear. With 61% of the French wanting to leave the EU and 48% of the Germans wanting to leave the EU, something tells me the UK might not be the last to leave.

We fished our waters for centuries without issue. The problems started with the massive industrial-scale trawler fleets of particularly Denmark. The British fishing fleet has always consisted of smaller boats.

You don't think many UK fisheries would use nets and large scale fishing if given the go ahead?

Why would we give them the go ahead to use something that we know is damaging? I want to support small businesses, not global multi-nationals.

No one eats fish. It's always in the reduced section at supermarkets it's not magically going to become popular because we can fish more of it.

Plus quite a bit goes abroad anyway. Will the Spanish still buy our lobsters?

Fishing has been a small business, but many of them, venture for the past century. The problem was with the common fisheries policy and the ability of foreign large fishing industries to barter for larger quotas. Considering it is done on a per company basis, the British fishing fleet made up of many small businesses have less lobbying power for a % of the quota.

Therefore as a whole, the entire British fishing fleet only has 20% of the Fishing Quota for our OWN waters.

For crying out loud, someone needs to tell the BBC to get a grip of their Brexit reaction team. They've just shown a picture of a National Front protest in Newcastle consisting of a whole 4 people as if that's in some way related to the referendum.

No use trying to explain the value of democracy to remainers they can't understand the value of anything you can't spend.

It's amazing the number of people I know who have never given two hoots about the economy but now they don't get their way it's all "but look at the stock market!". UK equities were down less than the Eurozone, which tells you something.

The cynic in me says it's all the start of a campaign to get us to vote again....

Canada isn't part of the EU.

If you want to read further into this subject I would suggest looking into the laws the EU have applied to the UK in the past 40 years or so.

That is control.
True.

It's got half the population of the UK too and an economy half the size. Of course there will be limits to it's FTA with the EU, but there also won't be free movement of people either. Could the UK negotiate something similar with a softening EU.

I'd love to see the UK try and work out FTA with countries like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, including some limited movement of people. After all as a people we have a lot in common.

Back to the EU, and there was talk of the EU making an example of Britain in any negotiations, to deter other countries from leaving, but that rhetoric seems to be easing up somewhat. In any case we might see other countries voting to leave before our negotiations are up.

Not sure why everyone's arguing, the deed's done, no petition or magic beans are going to change the result, so everyone might as well just accept it and move on.
Next thing to look forward to will be the Scottish indy ref. ;)

Much of the fish caught get sold and shipped to other countries. Or just taken back to other countries considering the tiny amount of quota the uk fleet has for our own waters.

What do you think it tells you?

That we're not only trashing our economy, but also that of our neighbours shouldn't really be a source of pride. The FTSE 250 is over 7% down, and most people think that's a better reflection of what will happen in the UK economy than the FTSE 100 and both of them, and the currencies, already had large Brexit risk depression in their value already factored in.

the fishing fleet now will also consist of type 45 destoryers and astute nuclear subs :p

Once we are out of the EU what waters are solely ours to fish? Will other trawlers trespassing be liable to arrest?

Also, yes, I think we will still be able to sell to Spain. It's not the price of our fish, it's the quality. Scottish langoustines are highly sought after in Europe.
