I'm thinking of getting my misses some for her birthday this year as iv spent a fortune in fresh flowers over the last few years.

Are there any particularly good sets that you would recommend?

Not a bad build, but the joins are a bit flimsy imo.

The lego mad kids of a work friend wanted me to film a time lapse of building their Leibherr excavator. Jeez what a huge model!
4108 pieces, 16 hours and 2 books with 1000 steps later.....

I very much regret not getting this before it retired. There is a real possibility i'll pay the scalper prices for it at some point in the next few months *shudder*

Genuine question, but why pay scalper prices opposed to buying a clone set instead? It's retired, Lego themselves will never see your money anyway
Fair question - I've had a couple of clone/Lepin sets in the past, quite a few missing pieces (nightmare trying to get any replacements, although you can cheekily go direct to lego), poor quality control on some of them so when you need flush fits they don't sit right, don't get a proper manual, just photocopies of some PDF.

Additionally, it's potential resale value as you never know what life holds. I bought the sealed GT3 after it retired for an inflated price off ebay, I can sell it years later, built and used at more than double the inflated price as it's a genuine set. The clone sets have little resale value.

Over the year as well as lots of Lego I've bought a lot of sets from alternative brands. I'll agree initially (3+ years ago) quality control for the likes of Lepin and such was hit and miss however these days the sets from other brands are a match if not better quality than Lego themselves. Stuff from MouldKing / Sembo / Cada is fantastic.
