** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

Qpad keyboards are really great quality, i will get some more information about when they will be available to order.

I think I'm going to buy a Qpad - just what I have been looking for!

What's the difference between the MK-80 and the MK-85?

Personally I prefer the MK-80 as it has blue led's in the keys.

It's good to see a full normal UK keyboard layout (without all the silly extra macro buttons) with MX Brown switches and blue back lit keys. It's a bloody miracle!

I've been mulling over whether to get a mechanical kb for a while now - I was considering a Filco or Das, but, having seen that link to WASD earlier in this thread I might go with them. I've just spent an hour playing with the customisation tool :D

I might wait for them to offer UK layout though. Then it's the big decisions such as which switch (brown or black), blank keys or not, colours and so on. Exciting!

Does anyone have any negatives about WASD to throw me back to square one?

Its a real pitty that Corsair went cheap and created a hybrid keyboard with the Vengeance K60 / K90. Either of these keyboards would have been perfect for me.

So, my SteelSeries 7G arrived today. Man, it feels amazing. Still getting used to it. Feels very bizarre after using a normal dome keyboard for so long.

Has anyone tried blue and brown switches and preferred the browns for typing ?

I got a blue switch Filco but it didn't suit me for some reason, hard to explain I just didn't like it for typing.

Just orderd a Noppoo choc mini with browns to see how that goes.

What are reds meant to be?

Blues are meant to be for typing, blacks for gaming, browns for a mix of both. Both I've not seen much of reds.

Yes reds are lighter and linear (non tactile, no clicky clicky if you have that fetish)

edit hmm that 7g looks quite good too..

Been looking at Mionix Zibal 60 what do you guys think?

Don't bother getting it. Firstly, for a £150 keyboard, it doesn't even come with memory to remember the back-light settings. Considering how cheap you can get memory for now-a-days (not to mention the fact it RRPs for £150) the fact it doesn't have any is a bit ridiculous. Secondly, about 30% of the time I boot up the computer, the keyboard isn't 'recognised' and needs to be re-plugged in, bear in mind this doesn't happen to any of my other 3-4 USB devices plugged into the PC 24/7, so is most probably the keyboard. Lastly, the USB hub doesn't function properly. I have a portable scanner, and it scans everything as a completely black PDF; rather weird, I know, it only happens on the two USB on the keyboard, never on the ones on my motherboard/front panel. Someone else I know has similar problems, so I doubt it's a faulty one.

Morale of the story, don't bother with it. It serves me right for buying an overpriced keyboard.

I'm looking to get a mechanical keyboard, and decided on MX Browns. I just want a standard keyboard with UK layout, no tricks or frills.

The only keyboards I've seen so far that are suitable are:
Das keyboard Model S Professional Silent
WASD semi-custom
Zowie Celeritas

Das would be about £110+postage, WASD about £100+import tax, and Zowie is £110, so all very similar prices.

My question is, which is the best to use? Are any of them nicer to type on or better built? I heard in one youtube review the Zowie isn't as nice to type on because of the keys or something.

The WASD looks a bit cheap, maybe because of the printing/tacky key colours (looks fine in black I suppose which is what I want ) and also has the most perks, like braided cable, extension, free key remover, nice engraved keys)

The das seems to be the most expensive. Speaking of which, why are they so damn expensive?! £100 is a huge amount to pay for something that can be £2.99. I assume the gold plating for robustness pushes their price up, and the cherry MX switches, but I reckon they only cost about £40 total to make, if that. I don't even want macros or back lighting, nor do these keyboards have them.

At the moment my decision is the WASD, but I'm waiting til mid December when they apparently start producing UK layouts.

Not understanding your logic "£100 is a huge amount to pay for something that can be £2.99"

(Unless you are talking about a cheap keyboard can be £2.99, yes, but it doesn't use mechanical switches)

1) Mechanical switches aren't cheap
2) Mechanical keyboards aren't as popular, and are known for enthusiasts, hence the price
3) Mechanical switches last a LOT longer, and are better quality. You are paying for that quality.

Not sure why the Zowie wouldn't be nice to type on. I think a few people here own one, and get on fine with it. If it's purely for typing, maybe Cherry MX Blue's would be better for you.

Yeah I work at Dyson so I definitely get the premium for something that's well built etc, but I just wonder how much of that is pure profit in the CEO of respective company's pocket.

I am not a fan of the clicking, I'd hate MX Blues. I plan to administer the O-ring mod to silence the browns even further.

Besides that, it's for gaming mainly. I play a mix of FPS, RPG and other games, but I don't want to rule out typing, which is why I've gone for browns instead of blacks.
