** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

Yeah I work at Dyson so I definitely get the premium for something that's well built etc, but I just wonder how much of that is pure profit in the CEO of respective company's pocket.

I am not a fan of the clicking, I'd hate MX Blues. I plan to administer the O-ring mod to silence the browns even further.

Besides that, it's for gaming mainly. I play a mix of FPS, RPG and other games, but I don't want to rule out typing, which is why I've gone for browns instead of blacks.

Understandable. I just bought myself a SteelSeries 7G (black keys) and it's fairly quiet. Maybe not the *best* mechanical keyboard for typing, but I'm getting on well so far. It is TOTALLY different to a dome keyboard. Would be interesting to try the other two types and see what I've missed out on.

I do a decent amount of typing, but I wanted something more for gaming. Blacks suiting me well so far.

why are they so damn expensive?! £100 is a huge amount to pay for something that can be £2.99. I assume the gold plating for robustness pushes their price up, and the cherry MX switches, but I reckon they only cost about £40 total to make

To be fair charging £100 for something that costs £40 to make is likely not far from standard practice for a product that doesn't do high sales volume. Factor in other costs not related to production coupled with the desire to make a profit (understandable) and there isn't much room for manouveur.

Any recommendations on a mid price backlit keyboard for typing? I'll be getting aither a Razer Nostromo or the Logitech G13 keyboard for gaming but would like a nice keyboard for typing.

Mid-priced + backlit + mechanical doesn't exist, you pay at a premium for backliting on mechanicals. Ducky Shine, Razer BWU, Deck and a few others... all >£100

You could buy a keyboard with brown switches for both gaming and typing. I am finding my blacks to still be very good for typing (although not the best switches you *can* buy for typing).

And yes, backlighting and mid price don't go together in a mechanical keyboard. It's a premium product, so caries a premium price.

Aha. I've never been able to get used to gaming on a normal keyboard. I'm currently using an Ideazon Z Board but it's slowly dying. The Razer Nostromo / Logitech G13 look like a good compromise. Can you recommend a mid price non backlit mechanical keyboard for just typing then?

The Cherry G80 range are reasonably priced (about £50) and come in all flavours of switches iirc. Not the best looking boards, but a good starting point without having to splash too much cash.

Ducky's from what I've heard are pretty middle of the road, run of the mill 'boards, they're not high end like Filcos, but they'll do the job nicely. I'm planning on getting a DK1087 for Christmas... But the DK1087XM range (they use ALPS instead of Cherry switches, just a different brand, not as common\popular as Cherry, but still good) is very good value for money.

Either that or have a google about for a g80-3000 - these usually run for 55-65 quid, but you'll be hard pressed to find anything about apart from blue's (clicky sound, with tactile feedback) and blacks (stiff, no feedback and pretty silent because you can't bottom the ******* out)

cherry office keyboards.

my mentor in tribes years ago guided me to cherry. cheap and reliable. easy to replace.

If you want the low activation force of browns but you don't want the click at all, then the reds are ideal.
I think I'd be happy with the browns for the tactile feedback. Would be nice for typing. I'm not in an environment where the clicking will annoy anyone except myself. Are browns much louder than rubber domes?

Reds or blacks would be my second choice though.

I guess. Mechanical keyboards definitely seem to be on the rise though.

Filco Majestouch 2

£100 is not so much money for something you might use daily and extensively. Cheap? No. Value - To me yes.
Not looked at this one yet. Is there any reason it would be better than the WASD. das or Zowie? As it stands, it's £126 compared to the other three being £100-£110.

Depends on what you mean by "cherry office keyboards" that's like saying AMD Phenom is a awesome chip, and not generalising as to whether you mean X2, X3, etc :)

Cherry MX office keyboards (g80-XXXX) aren't all that cheap - unless you get a second hand one.

No they aren't much louder really, browns aren't loud in the same way that blues are, most of the noise you get from them, as with the reds is from the keys bottoming out ...it takes quite some practice at becoming a very light touch to stop doing this though. Or it is for me at least, then again I was used to an IBM Model M and then a Filco ZERO, which are both using quite high force switches.

Like was mentioned earlier, mid-price + backlight + mechanical doesn't exist.

You will not find a backlit mechanical keyboard for less than £100. All the backlit mechanical keyboards will be more gaming orientated ones too.
