** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

Anyone here got a ducky shine backlit mx cherry blue? Supposed to be better build quality than qpad, more even backlighting, and generally on the same level as filco. I've found somewhere to buy them but I think it's US layout. Does anyone know if there's a UK layout?

Also, the WASD keyboards are supposedly even better quality, very customisable, but the best thing is they're apparently bringing out a backlit version next year.

Ducky are good (non-TKL, TKL models have issues which I don't believe have been resolved), probably better than QPad, not as good as Filco, and they probably won't be a UK layout.

WASD are in between Ducky and Filco, but the only downside of WASD are the lack of PBT caps.

No Ducky for me then. I might still go for the Qpad MK 80. How do people feel about no palmrest? I've noticed lots of mechanical keyboards with no palmrests, ie, filco, DAS and several others. Aesthetically, I'm starting to think it actually looks cooler without, do others think the same? Certainly the DAS is the best looking keyboard imo, just a pity they don't do a backlit, I'd snap one up in a heartbeat. I have a rest built into my lycosa, but actually, I've realised that as I don't touch type, my fingers hover over the keys not really touching the palmrest, so maybe I wouldn't miss it.

Here's something of interest, Max Keyboards. American company I think, supposed to be high quality according to several people. Full Nkey rollover on USB. That's normally on PS2 isn't it?

The MK 80 has blue switches do you mean the MK 85 with red switches?

As for the wrist rest the MK 85 has quite a comfortable one which has a rubber coated finish and not too big or obtrusive.
Cherry reds are nice to use imo although I have added O rings to stop the keys bottoming out with a thud.

Most people if they feel the need for a wrist rest buy one afterwards, like the usual gel\foamy ones, Filco do a really high quality leather wrist rest which does cost a bit - but if you're spending money on mechanical keyboards, you've got enough money to afford luxury of a £45 (I think?) leather wrist rest.

This is my first post on this thread so forgive me for not reading it all.

What is the very best typing keyboard available i.e. for office/desktop use?

I believe blues are the best for tying

Don't let the clicky noises put you off though. Can always buy O-rings to dampen it.

Mechanical switches last a lot longer than rubber domes or scissor switches and just feel better all together. Rather good investment if you ask me.

I keep reading that brown are a nice compromise for those that work in the day, play in the evening.

That's not strictly me, I game very little these days, but when I do I'd like the keyboard to be with me.

Also it seems the Das or Filco are the 'best' for build if you don't want any tat and gimmicks.

Subjective, I prefer typing on a heavier switch (black/clear). Get a cheap Cherry and play around with that, you can find them with both black and blue switches on eBay usually for around £20-£30.
Either that or sign up to deskthority and make a WTB thread.

O-Rings only dampen bottoming out, which is the same for ANY switch. Blues are inherently more noisy than other switches by design, O-Rings will not lessen this.

I have been adding O rings to my keys to dampen down the bottoming out the switches normally get.
Have been reluctant to try and remove the spacebar key as I know it is also resting on some kind of wire spring?
Has anyone here removed the spacebar on a mechanical kb?

Cheers

Which board?

I did all the wire supported keys on my Filco Majestouch-II, including spacebar.

Depending on the board method will differ. My Filco has 2 white plastic "bungs" that push into the back of the larger key caps, they have small rectangular handles on the opposite end into which the wire hooks. I pulled up on one side of the switch with enough force to pull the bung out. This then gives you room to slide the other side of the key cap off the wire section with the bung bit still attached. You need to pull quite hard as the the plastic bit itself is pushed quite tightly into the keycap.

I can not advise for different boards though, I Googled and found some various tips/tricks for different models, perhaps you could try Googling yours?

Well after doing a bit more research and watching videos I've ordered myself a UK Filco Ninja Majestouch-2 (brown switches).

It's the Qpad MK-85

I already had googled with no joy unfortunately but not to worry.

I'm working my way across from left (WASD) to right adding O rings.

Due to finish in Autumn at this rate.

I have an older gaming keyboard called a Raptor K1.

It was around £80 when I bought it iirc, but it's very nice to type on. Has a fast response, a USB hub and the styling is minimal. I don't really like the crazy LED lighting of some models.

The one downside is the lack of backlight to the keys.

Well it's £126 well spent, took a little getting used to but I really, really like my new Filco.

I've been using a keyboard since I was about six years old, so 24 years in total, touch typing has always been second nature to me and with that in mind went for the Filco Majestouch 2 Ninja (to be fair you can still see the key faces which are labelled).

I can't believe I've been putting up sub-standard keyboards for so many years now!

If anyone is having doubts then I'd say if you spend a number of hours or more at your computer each day, treat yourself to a proper keyboard.

Exactly how I justify it - even though my keyboards aren't as expensive as a Filco, they're still mechanical, they still feel nicer than MS and Logitech's, I hate having to go do stuff on my colleagues machines with their naff keyboards, there's no follow through, they feel absolutely horrid to type on.

I personally currently use a Cherry G80-1800 DE layout with MX Blacks, but because I can type completely without looking at my board and know where everything is - I have no issue with this, and the fact that it cost me €5... I bought three. :)

Has anyone here had hands on experience of filco or DAS cherry blue switches, and also the cherry blue Qpad MK80, and is there any difference in the feel and the clicky sound? What I mean is, I'm tempted to get the Qpad since it's backlit, but does it feel and sound as good as the filco/DAS?
